Psychic World for Sega Master System - Review | hungrygoriya

Ойындар

Psychic World for the Sega Master System is an action platformer that won my heart from the first moment I set eyes on it. Lucia's journey to save her sister Cecile with the use of her ESP Booster sets the stage for one of my favourite action platform games. 🍖
The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

    Played through this one recently and I did actually find a use for the teleport: It replenishes the item pickups in the stage, so you can "farm" the early ones quite easily this way.

    I remember I my classmate had this exact game, I loved it, but couldn't remember the name, and it stayed in the back of my mind for years, never encountered a video talking about it. FINALLY, after 20 years, and thanks to you, I finally know what was the name of that game. THANK YOU! PS: as many other SMS games, this too had a killer soundtrack

    Yessss! I'm so happy that the mystery is solved for you! And the soundtrack is fantastic, you're right. I mentioned loving The Ruins' music, but the first stage track is something else. I don't know what it is about it, but the aesthetic and the tunes drew me straight into this one and never let me go. I love it!

    I thought I'd watched this review before when I first discovered your channel, but it seems I hadn't! I just did now, though, and I'm glad to see you enjoyed this game, as the MSX2 version of it is a favorite of mine as well, and it's good to see the Master System version holds its own with it. If you EVER get a chance to play it on MSX2, though, I highly recommend doing so -- not only is the game longer, with 8 stages instead of 5, but the stages are also nonlinear with multiple divergent paths through to the boss in almost all cases, giving the game a surprisingly large amount of replay value. In addition, the MSX2 game features FM versions of the game's music (which sounds fantastic on the MSX's Yamaha OPLL chip!), and a few of the minor issues you noted in your review are addressed: selecting a new psychic ability in the menu DOES pause the game in the MSX version, and running is achieved by double-tapping a direction; it does not ever automatically occur (though the timing for the double-tapping is a bit nonstandard, requiring you to push a direction, let go of it for about 3/4 of a second, then press and hold it again. The upshot to this, though, is that you will NEVER run by accident!). About the only downside to the MSX version is that the pre-stage cutscenes using in-game graphics aren't in that version, though this is made up for by full-on manga slate cutscenes with narration and/or dialogue after every few stages. And while no official English version of the MSX game was ever released, to my knowledge, there IS a full fan-translation readily available, and the English text in it is quite good. ...I feel like you'd probably enjoy the MSX library in general, come to think of it. It's an absolute free-for-all, with tons of utter junk to sift through, but LOTS of gems to be found if you dig, making the garbage-sifting extremely worthwhile. Given your love of Faxanadu, for example, I'd personally recommend checking out the game "A Life M36 Planet: Motherbrain Has Been Aliving" (yes, that's actually its name), which is an MSX-exclusive game I absolutely HAD to track down after hearing its name, and it wound up actually being a really good game that reminds me a bit of what Faxanadu might've been if it were sci-fi instead of fantasy. It's not perfect by any means -- in fact, it contains one particular game-breaking bug that's extremely easy to trigger and you won't even know you triggered it until you're HOURS farther in -- but it's nonetheless a really atmospheric and ambitious game with an absolutely bonkers story about highly evolved space plankton. A fan-translation exists for it -- which I'm proud to say I was the translator for! -- and I'm hosting a full online strategy guide I wrote for the game on my personal site as well. (And the fan-translation in questions fixes the game-breaking bug, too, so that's a bonus!) Hope you don't mind the bit of personal promotion, but given Psycho World's fame among MSX fans and your general taste in games as established by your reviews thus far, I really feel like you'd glean tremendous enjoyment from the MSX's wilderness of obscure gaming gems, with A Life M36 Planet being a prime example of one that I'm almost certain you'd really take to. Check it out, if you ever get a chance! I don't think I can link to my website in this comment without the comment immediately going to your spam folder, but if you look me up on Twitter at wyrdwad_tom, I've got a link to it from my profile. And as always, great review of a great game! Makes me want to play Psycho World again right now. ;)

    4:37 - 4.50 Honestly, that sounds more intuitive than having to go in the menu and fidget about before selecting the desired weapon. I genuinely appreciate it when developers are able to find ways to work around the lack of buttons, even if it's not always the smoothest implementation. This game is expensive on eBay, but watching this review makes me want to give it a shot. It looks like Mega Man oddly enough, and I enjoy those games.

    Yeah, they did what they could with the controls to make it happen! I can appreciate working within those kinds of confines, but I'm still grumpy about accidentally teleporting back to the beginning of the stage a lot, haha I hope you can find a way to play it. I lucked out with a copy that wasn't very nice looking and I'm fine with an uglier cart as long as the game works well. I think I imported to Canada from France a few years ago. Good luck!

    Great review! This really does look like a fun game. I like that the story has a female protagonist rescuing her sister, instead of the usual guy saving his girlfriend; I appreciate familial bonds getting some appreciation, even if they still trot out the damsel-in-distress trope.

  • @samp1862

    Just picked up a copy of the Master System version and played it through. It was a real delight because I had the Game Gear version as a kid. The GG version felt more like an action platformer whereas the MS version had more puzzle elements in it. On the later levels, after I went through a door I would often have to hit pause and take stock of where I was in the room and what I needed to do to progress. The teleport power is actually more useful in the MS version because I goofed an ice block puzzle and needed to reset the level. In the GG version, you can't soft lock yourself like you can in the MS version because the ice blocks are set up differently. Also SPOILERS only as an adult I realized that in both versions, the shooting star that Lucia & Cecile make a wish on is actually a space ship leaving Earth, implying that Dr. Knavik (or another alien?) is still threat. It's a setup for a sequel that I hope one day could be made! And, finally, the ending sequence misspells Lucia's name as "Rucia". I lol'd at that because it's the second MS game I've beaten in a row that misspells a main character's name (I beat Sonic Chaos before this). Anyways, thanks for a great review! I didn't realize there was a MS version of one of my favorite GG games until I saw your video :)

  • @hungrygoriya

    @hungrygoriya

    Good to hear that you've gotten to enjoy the Master System game after enjoying the GG one so much. That teleport ability was the bane of my existence sometimes, but I could definitely see a few spots where it would've been useful to use. I thought the ending of the Master System version was super cheesy, and I also enjoyed how they wished on his ship. Talk about bad luck! I would've played a sequel without a doubt and it's sad that this series didn't go any further than this game, even if we did manage to get three slightly different versions of it. I'm trying to think if there's any other games where I've seen a misspelled protagonist name. I have yet to play Sonic Chaos, so I have something to look forward to at least, haha! And you're very welcome for the review. I'm glad a few more people are hearing about this game and are giving it a try. It's awesome!

    Hi again! You have the VERY BEST retro game reviews I know of (I seek out many of them!). It’s awesome to see such an appreciation for so many games that I thought no one else ever know of… We are in a golden age of gaming! Sidenote: I searched to see if you did a review on a number of games, and I was surprised that I couldn’t find them… Maybe you did and I’m not looking correctly, but one example of an awesome SMS game is “Wonderboy in Monster Land” (there are other awesome games in the WB series, too). Bonus shout to “Rastan”. Also, hope you got a chance to revisit “Zillion II”… I was also always curious about “Miracle Warriors”, when I initially tried it back in the late 80s, the game seemed *impossible* to play (I quickly turned to Y’s, Lord of the Sword, Golvellius and Phantasy Star for SMS Adventure/RPGs!)… Very difficult! Anyways, GREAT work, as always!

    Neat-o. I think I'll have to check it out. The music in this game sounds great. :D As for graphics, the Master System GPU was pretty far ahead of the NES. It had 16Kb video RAM compared to the 2K present on the NES. Plus, the NES used 2BPP tiles which could display transparency, and 3 colors at most. Where as the Master System used 4BPP tiles, which could display transparency and 15 colors.
