Psychedelic Parapsychology and the Science of Shamanism | David Luke | TEDxGreenwichUniversity

NOTE FROM TED: Experiments discussed in this talk should not be performed outside of accredited research settings. Research around psychedelics remains an emerging field field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
David has been researching into Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology for decades. Been published more than 100 academic papers he is one the leading researchers in this field. In this talk he asks us the question to explore the terrain on what the path forward would look like if we try to scientifically study the claims of shamans that are the people who go into an altered state of consciousness at will, in the name of their community, to communicate with the spirits of nature and to transcend time and space and bring back useful information for their community. Such study potentially has important implications not just for understanding the nature of consciousness, but perhaps the nature of time, and maybe the nature of reality itself. David's talk is about Psychedelic parapsychology and the science of shamanism.
Having published more then 100 academic papers is one of the world's leading researchers on psychology of exceptional human experience and nature of altering human consciousness.
His work covers the parapsychology and mysteries of psychedelic plants. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

You need to tighten up your controls. When you make the error bars wide enough and the visions vague enough, you can easily "cherry pick" (your own words) to get what appears to be a statistically significant result - even where none might exist. Also, instead of saying people "had telepathic experiences" you can only say that they "reported having telepathic experiences". After all, "telepathic experiences" is the claim to be investigated - and not the "observation" until confirmed in a way that leaves little room for luck or cherry picking. Nonetheless, I think these are important questions to address. So I commend you for trying. And, I think that there is likely much to be learned about the mind and treating (perhaps curing instead of managing) mental health and trauma issues using mind altering drugs. Best of luck with it!

I use the term "experience" in that they had telepathic experiences, but (following the work of Krippner) these were not necessarily genuinely telepathic "phenomena". Further, the statistics were not 'cherry picked' they were complete and probabilistic, although the examples I gave were, and I made that clear I think, - though I appreciate your comments.

Don't want to be "That Guy" but some of us are more in tune with all of you than we even know, some of us have extra senses where we can feel good and bad or both. For me personally I've had experiences waaay before I even heard of psychedelics. Telekinesis/or floating feelings, thoughts for me personally happens when you put absolutely no effort into it and also has to be random (which go hand and hand). I was able to either force my parents car to breakdown or vice versa, something like an itch you can't scratch tells me "To just say the Car is going to breakdown" I was 7 or 8 at the time. Car broke down we were on our way to the Grand Canyon and this car was brand new and broke down immediately when i said it and broke down multiple times. This is and has been a random voice that just pops up and doesn't go away until you say or do something that your internal thought won't leave you alone about. Itll annoy you till you say it. I've had a neighbors house catch on fire and I told my parents about it before it happened about 5 minutes before. Phone calls and knowing what happened before it happened but it's minutes if not seconds before. This is my own internal voice but it's like my internal voice gets a brief tourrettes and sporadically tells me something. It comes in a voice and not an image, video but there is a slight feeling. I also now that I'm older tell you what land (if I'm on it) has positive vibes or negative vibes. The only way to describe it is to picture yourself in a desert with nothing and then picture yourself on a tropical island with nothing . Which one to you would have bad vibes (I call it sour ground)? The desert obviously because you won't last long where things won't grow, heat can quickly kill you and of course no water. Your environment is THE MOST IMPORTANT no matter whats going on in life. Your surroundings and positive vibes from your surroundings will for sure help and vice versa. Now take what you can't see like Radon, soil pollution, air pollution, water, farms sprayed with cancerous chemicals, or just natural bad (sour ground). You can feel good and bad and not know why but some feel alot stronger than others. I believe a select few of us regardless of the group members we are in, can control/stear the feeling, vibe, what we concentrate on or what we all see. I believe we work in a field and if you're within the right field at the right time. I describe field as a place with an invisible field/force and can change depending on the chemistry of the place which there are many different variables that can change experiences on many different levels. Just now getting into stars, what phase the moon is in, weather, etc... It all gives off vibes some more than others and I by no means have a clue how this all works. I've just always been like this so it's hard for me to not see how people can see, feel or experience what I do. The best way for me to describe it is if you take a ball and aim it and throw it before you throw it you know where its going to go, what you may hit on the way and the reactions and why. Way to hard to explain so I may have confused you and I've just confused myself trying to easily explain what's basic to me.

*He* wasn't very clear about what he did. He didn't provide enough details about who chose the videos, how many of them were chosen, and how much he knew about their contents ahead of time. We don't even know if a second researcher was involved, but I presume there wasn't. This isn't research; it's an anecdote.

Telepathy is def a known effect for most people who have experiemented with psychedelic and no we do not have to use a science lense only scientists need to do that. I am to busy just having experiences but do appreciate the scientists who decide to go that route.

I had a research about psychedelics on my undergrad inspired by the hypothesis of McKenna. The research was rejected because the profs claimed it was too complicated for undergrad and there were no facilities to support my research. His research journey wants me to continue and see the results myself. But yes, it's hard to find fundings to support a psychedelic research, you guys have recommendations on where to find one?

This is very radical and cool but... you can remote view and unlock precognition without psychedelics ( "Mind Trek" by Joseph McMoneagle and "Psychic Warrior" by David Morehouse ). I guess what I'm wondering is... how do you figure out what's a result of our innate psychic abilities and what is a result of the psychedelics? I'm actually 2 hours into a microdose of 100mg Golden Teachers right now but I took a course in coordinate remote viewing with David Morehouse back in 2004 and accidentally unlocked precognition - I would get snapshots / photographs of the future. The photographs would never make any sense at the time but eventually, I would experience them in the future and then be, "A-ha... so that's what that photo meant". I surround myself with psychics, energy healers and artists so telepathy is something that happens all the time. Oh... you should check out "How to Test and Develop Your ESP" by Paul Hudson.

psychedelics only function to redirect the brian's already present mechanisms...theoretically we can induce the same experience that a psychedelic does through a meditative state, without ingesting the psychedelic. Anything that you are experiencing on a psychedelic is your own doing, but more specifically, your own reactions to a foreign substance. The cause of the psychedelic-experience is your own doing, and your own doing is a reaction to the substance.. What causes us to see (and feel) the color blue, the blue-object or how our brain processes the blue light? It's both... there isn't any action that is 100% caused by a person's functions
