@@EpicAndrew97 Doesn't make it right. It just gives an excuse for the criminals to use police brutality to dismiss certain pieces of evidence and testimonies. They could even use his anger as a way to say that in his frustration, he planted evidence, and the defense doesn't need to prove it. They just need to create that doubt and get the criminal off. Police are human and having human reactions is natural, but as an adult you are required to control those reactions.

Say what you want about cops and detectives in America, what you say to a psychologist should stay between you and them. The guy at the beginning should be held responsible for accessing and revealing this information. As for Stablers violent fantasies, I think they make sense, he's dealing with the worst humanity has to offer. It's not his thoughts that he should be judged for but his actions. He has done things he deserves to answer for, but this wasn't one of them.

if i remember right, Cragen goes back to the commission, listing off the types of crimes Stabler has seen, namely ones with child victims. he then says something along the lines of, "as a parent, as a person, i is natural to punish those who would do such terrible things"

I think this brought about one of the dumbest part of the series in regards to Stabler later down the line. Whenever someone always called out Stabler's antics, they'd always bring up how he THOUGHT about killing criminals whenever he gets violent with someone or does something against the rules. Why this is dumb is because they ignore the MANY cases of him actively assaulting suspects (some of which didn't actually DO anything and weren't the perp they were after) in custody which WOULD be the bigger issues to bring up when questioning his character. It's like they were afraid of giving the other side of the argument too valid of a point.

It's really fascinating, in some ways this has only gotten better, more nuanced, with the times. When it aired, most people--including the showwriters--would probably have nodded along with Munch. Cop shows are full of "tough on crime" mavericks who play by their own rules (In some ways, Stabler is more conflicted than most cop protaganists are). The audience was meant to mostly sympathize with Stabler--and really, you still do. Of course he gets mad, seeing that sort of violence, and having his daughter exposed to it. Who wouldn't be? Fifteen years on the job has left him with some trauma. Of course he feels betrayed by his psyche confession being brought out to a commission, and of course the idea he might lose his job is torturous. But now, most viewers tend to be more on the commission's side. A cop who fantasizes about killing criminals is indeed a red flag. We can practically read the headline: "Killer Cop confided in shrink 20 years ago that he fantasized about killing perps" It makes sense to us why a psychologist would be alarmed to learn a detective like Stabler was struggling with fantasies like that, and think his superiors should know. It even makes sense why the commission would be alarmed and demand an investigation, possibly with an eye toward removing Stabler (honestly, given Stabler's behavior in literally ALL of SVU, they have a point). You can see why the cops react with such anger and defensiveness to the commission, but you can also see why the commission is doing what it does. I do miss Briscoe. Briscoe was on the force for a lot longer than 15 years, and he didn't let it turn him into a powderkeg--just a stand-up comedian.

Then to admit until he saw it was a "good kid, star of the community" and then he deserved better. That's not a fantasy for a fantasy, that's intent if he ever pulls a trigger. He saw it as okay until it was someone with connections that could afford to go after him for murder.

Where in the Sam Hell did you get that from? First, he told the first psychologist that he thought about killing perps after he finished a case where a well to do family were keeping a young woman hostage and caged under their bed and the wife had murdered the young woman's aunt. Second, he told Skotia that he thought about shoving the gun down the perps throat because his daughter saw it and he wishes to protect her. He then relents also when it turns out the victim had assaulted the perp when they were younger, when he said that the perp, "Didn't deserve that, he deserved better." Your interpretation makes it seem that if Elliot could he would, the truth is that Elliot is a man whose has a mission of protection for those who need it with an intensity of 11 to achieve that said goal.

I'm surprised they're holding the phyc thing in what looks to be a Chapel, you'd think a police department would have rooms of its own and a priest would have better things to do with his Chapel than cop therapy

I hated stabler as a character, it always seemed as if he was always having the same anger issues, facing em, dealing with em, and then two episodes later boom same thing all over again, wash rinse repeat. Made me seasick.

stabler might have made good tv but he was an awful depiction of a cop, all the more worse because the show always depicted the victims of his brutality as guilty and deserving of it - rationalizing his behavior as justified
