PSX Longplay [059] Rage Racer

Alternate recording showing a more accurate run of the game even though it now 4 times more repetitive now ;)
Third game in the Ridge Racer series and to me, it is the weakest of the series. The game revolves around pretty much one track containing 4 circuits. There are 6 speed classes you have to progress though over the same 4 courses in forward and reverse so there is plenty of game, but it does get repetitive.
Graphicaly it looks like they have taken the original ridge racer engine as far as it can go and there is a massive difference in fidelity when they made Type 4. The music soundtrack is not really arcade style and I guess that's why they called it Rage Racer to get away from being an arcade game and play like a home console game. This notion is further enforced by the notion of earning money by winning racers and buying faster cars which wouldn't make sense in an arcade game. One aspect I do like is the woooosh sound when you get close to walls oh and the day and night transitions, although the lack of car lighting is a dampener.
Speaking of walls, that's probably one of the games biggest downsides. It is far to easy to hit or clip the walls. There could be an inch between the wall and your car, but because the collision detection boundary seems to extend past the wall, the game often says you hit it and punishes you even when you were not even close to it. This also makes Chase view pretty much an impossible mode to ride with as the slight angle the camera goes on when you near a corner means you cant judge it properly and can either under steer or over steer and hit the invisible wall and mess up your lap.
I pretty much play with Grip car and Grip tyres all the way through the game as I find the game far to unforgiving with drift setting, especially at faster speeds, Anytime you drift, there is a huge chance you will get locked into an uncontrollable drift, lose to much speed and stall the car. It is really annoying when this happens in a grip car and is pretty much suicide in a drift car as you will encounter uncontrollable drift more often especially in the faster classes. yeah, I didn't really enjoy this game.
One final thing. You cant just stick to one car and you do need to buy the faster (max speed) cars in order to beat the Extreme oval rounds. I don't really like this mechanic that forces you into a specific car purchase in order to progress the game. It hurts more if you spent all your money on the wrong car and have to win races all over again to afford the correct car.
So a break down of this video. I play through all 5 classes in the main gp and unlock all the gold trophies there. I then play through 5 reverse classes in the extra GP which unlocks the final forward 6th class. After beating this and completing the game I show all the trophies and then go back into gp mode. (Note the re-coloured title screen). After beating the game I am awarded with maximum money to spend as I like, more money than you can possible spend which I use to show all the fully upgraded cars. Finally when saving the game you will see a time mismatch. This due to chopping out a couple of races where I only raced to gain money to upgrade the cars in order to progress through the class and win.
For the first 10 tracks I make sure to select the music in order to make sure they are all shown. I also show full replays after each race (its just one lap)
00:00:00 Intro and Class 1 Calme GP (3 tracks)
00:24:55 - Class 2 Brise GP (3 tracks)
00:46:20 - Class 3 Rafale GP (4 Tracks)
01:12:05 - Class 4 Mistral GP (4 Tracsk)
01:36:10 - Class 5 Tempete GP (4 Tracks)
02:01:00 - Reverse Class 1 Aisance GP (3 Tracks)
02:24:23 - Reverse Class 2 Agitation GP (3 Tracks
02:44:45 - Reverse Class 3 Irritation GP (4 Tracks)
03:10:00 - Reverse Class 4 Colere GP (4 Tracks)
03:33:40 - Reverse Class 5 Rage GP (4 Tracks)
03:56:15 - Forward Class 6 Diable GP (4 Tracks)
04:19:25 - Game Beaten. Show all trophies and buy all car upgrades to show all final car models. -

The only sad thing is everything from cosmetics to car upgrades to tracks would be tied behind some form of pay wall and you'd still be expected to pay full price for the game.

It would be great but I doubt it - if memory serves me correct, I don't think Rage Racer sold that well back in 1996/1997. That being said, I'd love them to remaster the game but still keep the spirit of the original, may be even add some new tracks and cars. The music still holds up good for 25 years.

I didn't either. I didn't get past the 4th class!
Doing the previous longplay of this game took me more than a month and it ended up being quite a mess in many respects, so I'm glad the game finally has what it deserves. Now that I'm watching you play in the 6th class stages I can't understand how did I found it so incredibly challenging. I guess that I tried too hard with the drifting? That 6th class was one of the best racing game experiences ever for me, doing so many curves at a super high speed was something special. Gj and thanks for sharing!
Dude, you always take me back to the classic games I use to play. Always amazes me (tear drop) thank you. :P

What a difference in presentation between this third game and the two previous ones. Starting with Rage Racer, the series would have intros, stylish menus, many more options... Compare Rage and Type 4 with the barebones package of the first two titles, they really upped their game!
Played this when it first came out. My generation went from mega drive and snes to this! Looking back knowing what I know, they actually looked liked cars to us back then. The absolute lack of textures and shaders is laughable now but they honestly looked good at the time!

Man i want to play this again so bad! I had hundreds of hours of saves in my memory card lol. Started playing in auto and got to the last levels and realised I needed to start again learning how to race in manual to use the final cars. Then you got to do everything again with the tracks reversed. The music is just as good as I remember too!
When Valentino Rossi was secretly driving for Lizard before his 125cc debut in 1996 Ahahahahah! Jokes apart, wonderful game, absolutely love it! Thank you very much for your long play, and for all the time you have spent on it, really appreciate. Evergreen hands down.
Thanks man for showing us all Rage Racer and it was a lot of fun as well ;)
Loved this game. I remember you could take turns at or near full speed. Always felt the games that game after like GT were clunky feeling (certainly more realistic in having to really brake to make turns). This was my fav.
Don't mind me watching this game again and I still love this game so much :)
Still get a heart attack watching that extreme oval.

One of relatively few games that really gives the feeling of speed and recklessness, particularly since it was all D pad, so super smooth analog curves weren't possible. The oval with the top car was really hectic!

This was the first really serious racing game i played. There had been other racing games of course, I'm an 80's baby. I grew up with Pole Position and racers that were on the NES that i can't remember but I always preferred platforming and adventure games, this was the first really serious racer i ever played and seeing the seaside city its set in from all the different angles really made me wish i could boundary break and go explore the world of the game. I also played this with my mom and half brother a lot and it was one of few games that we all bonded over. I still play it infrequently using my ps1 emulator.
Racers start the engine and let's get on 3 2 1 go

Here is what I was expecting from this Game, a Longplay Playthrough with All Characters, and now I have it
I used to love being able to customize the logos and images on the card and the road signs. This was my favorite ps1 game. The soundtrack, the dark visuals, the physics, the limited but so well-detailed tracks. Honestly, it was perfect. They should remaster it as it is.
Holy Shite, this is the game I remember playing back in 2000 on a borrowed PlayStation! I thought the game graphics were so damn awesome & they were back then. Now I look @ this & think that just looks old. Good memories though.

I used to play Rage Racer a lot in my teen years during the late '90s, but I never beat it. I always hated the fact that some cars could only be raced in manual transmission only (sorry, but I don't do shifting up and down in racing games), the fact that some races were so hard that you had to go back and CONSTANTLY race easier races to win money, plus the flaws that Mad-Matt has already highlighted. I still like this game, though, but I think Namco could have done a better job with Rage Racer. I wonder if you World of Longplays guys will do a playthrough of R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 in the near future.
