PSMSA DIY Derringer - DIY 22wmr Cylinder

Спорт

Practical Scrap Metal Small Arms vol 7 Model 2 Revolver kit from Excalibur.
These are manually turned and index on the bottom cylinder. Six 22mags won't fit, five would but wouldn't index correctly, so four it is !
Their brass cratering into the breech face makes turning the cylinder difficult after firing. I've found dropping the hammer on a fired round 3 or 4 times is enough to hammer it back down so it can be rotated again. Not a complete success, but this is a novelty at best anyway.

@SirKL all self taught. I enjoy the DIY of everything, but applied to firearms the most. Almost 15 years ago I stared acquiring metal working equipment, lathes, mills and the like. KZread is great for the basics, but they don't allow anything instructional for firearms related videos. Basically, I learned through desire. I wanted to make firearms so I did just that. Found some easy plans and went to work. They're not all successful, and certainly not all show pieces. I only post my videos to inspire and encourage others to take on builds of their own. The "Practical Scrap Metal Small Arms" series is a great place to start.

Check with the local scrap yard for tubing for a bullet trap. I use a piece of 12” schedule 40 steel pipe. It was scrap from an industrial pump but anything like that will work. It has a 5/16” side wall thickness. I used a torch to cut the face at a 45 degree opening to shoot into. Make the opening 12” x 18” or so. Then I dug a hole a few feet deep and set it in the ground at a 45 degree angle so the bullets hit the back and angle down into the tube. Filled it with sand. 20 years ago and never a problem except I cannot clean it out without digging it up. If I ever need lead I have a stash. Many thousands of rounds from 22 short up to 300 mag without even a good dimple in the strike face. Really. But 300 mag really knocks the rust off of it. Lol. The pipe was about 5’ long also.

I believe I may cast one out of aluminum so That I can bore the 4 holes out and even though it is already for magnums i do not have faith in the mystery metal that it is made from. I had once posted a comment of a project for someone to make, of a rifled black powder .44/.45LC pepperbox, and posed the question if rifling was even possible or practical in a pepper box cylinder; similar to the .45LC/.410 version that survivorjohnny44 John Tewelow posted on KZread? Though, it didn't mention anything about rifling. I'm still interested in knowing if rifling in the cylinder would be a good project for consideration?

Sounds like a cool project. The rifling, while it'd be nice if it really works and works well, it's required to be legal, so if you get that covered, anything else is icing! I've had great luck with smaller calibers. The first 22lr I ever built from scratch is very accurate. Even the 32's are decent. I've had some good and lots of bad luck with 9mm, 357 and up. I have 410/45 build planned. Maybe you'll get to it before I do. Post a video of your project please !

I like pepperbox revolvers, they are somehow just more appealing to me than regular revolvers. But I didn’t quite get how this one indexes. Am I right to assume that there is a spring loaded part that „locks“ into the front of the lower barrel? Also nice work btw! It was really interesting to watch you build that cylinder from scratch. I haven’t done much machining, so it was my first time seeing that wheel you used to get the knurling. A very interesting process

But basically, it's just a recess the depth of the rim. The chamber only goes deep enough for the case without the rim. Probably should have left a tit in the center for a bearing surface. The outer ring works though.

PSMSA is short for Professor Parabellum's Practical Scrap Metal Small Arms. This one is Model 1 from vol 7. Cobray / Leinad made production versions of these as well. Excalibur sold many (and still sells some) different kits for DIY builds. Mostly based around 410/45lc. I have several videos with a few different versions that I have built.

No, it's old school. Manually indexed Revolver. There's a detent to make it stop in the right position. But you have to turn it between each shot. A lot of the PSMSA series designs have an antique like action. As that tends to be easier to DIY at home. Professor sounds better than the mad scientist of janky Homemade guns !
