Degeneracy may not be the best word, nor the most accurate, some may argue. I don't think you can shame these people into seeking help or recovering - in fact I think shaming a person is a pretty quick way to get them to shy away from seeking help and encourage them to partake in the behaviour harming themselves and those they have a responsibility for, therefore making their behaviour all the more dangerous. This PSA, I think, aims to shock as oppose to shame. It targets the empathetic, parental aspects of a parent/guardian who is using drugs, that which might be buried under the behaviours, thought processes and/or other external causes which contribute to their repeated drug abuse, appealing "around" those things that cause them to be negligent - that cause them to be written off as negligent and uncaring, bad people - as oppose to shaming them for those things. Whether or not that method works, I genuinely wouldn't know.

@terg8472 They may love their kids but they do not deserve them. Not all people deserve to be parents hence the saying every kid deserves parents but not all parents deserve kids. Parents who are addicts are not worthy of being around kids if they couldn't even have the common sense to take care of their own well being so bringing kids in the world of their own addiction is very dcked up. It's the same logic as raising any living being, I love pets but if I know I have problems going on where I cannot properly look after them then no pet should be with me till I fix those problems.

Glad to see some empathy and compassion in the comments instead of the usual rabid drug user shaming. Humiliating someone is the exact wrong way to get them to change and get help. Helping addicts understand why they need help and that they're probably hurting those around them including themselves is such a powerful tool.
@dewolf123
7 ай бұрын
Most of the time they don't want to try and get help so they are asking for said humiliation hence the media usually jokes about it through dark humor. People will do what they want and often stupid things they do have consequences. It's not other people's job to baby you if you refuse to have common sense and not do addictive drugs to begin with. Do whatever if you wish as long as it's legal obviously but once you break the law that's your own fault, it's also not fair to drag your family into your problems. That's where the shame aims at technically, not the drug user but the said user being selfish.

I think the point is more so that children should NOT need to know this, as in their parents shouldn't be overdosing in front of them and putting it on them to be the one to save their lives. The miracle of their arrival apparently was not enough. I had a good friend growing up who got hooked on H by the time she was 16. Sad story, she had 2 sons and the oldest was born addicted and has non verbal autism. The second, she was briefly staying with me in the cold winter months while halfway through her second pregnancy and she would leave all day and have me watch her kid because she was out getting high. Periodically he would look up and go to the door and look, waiting for her to come back. I would tell him "not right now, we have to wait, let's watch Shrek" and it would distract him again, but if he ever woke up while his parents were still asleep he would cry and wail. He knew that they would do that in front of him when they were sleeping in their car. I can't even imagine a defenseless disabled toddler, screaming in the back seat because he doesn't understand why they won't wake up. The boys live with the older ones father's mother now.

I mean... yeah, children shouldn't have to witness their parents taking drugs, let alone overdosing. And the best way to prevent that is better and *accurate* education on the effects of drugs and decriminalization so that people who are suffering from addiction feel safe getting help. Addiction is a devastating illness and while it often is a result of bad choices, it can also be a result of bad luck. Lots of people get hooked on heroin after being put on opiates for chronic pain or after injuries.

I once had to see my mom withdraw from her medicine, that was pretty scary. Later that day me and my dad went to my grandmas and when we came back, we saw my mom on the floor and we remember her saying that she didn’t even know how she got there. Days after that happened I remember her telling me that she apparently had a seizure when me and my dad were gone, that’s why she was on the floor. I came home from school once when I was I think in 3rd or 4th grade and was told my mom passed out so she had to be taken to the hospital. She later told us the truth when I was in 9th grade and told us she had overdosed on drugs. We knew she was doing some at the time when we were living with her but never knew an overdose was possible.
An overdose can look different depending on the drug. My dad just stopped breathing and went completely blue, there was no shaking no foaming, just stillness and the change of skin color.

1:03 Yeah. My mom is having an overdose. * starts dancing *
"don't call an ambulance" that part is the realest
Glad to see some empathy and compassion in the comments instead of the usual rabid drug user shaming. Humiliating someone is the exact wrong way to get them to change and get help. Helping addicts understand why they need help and that they're probably hurting those around them including themselves is such a powerful tool.
@dewolf123

@beardiemom

I mean... yeah, children shouldn't have to witness their parents taking drugs, let alone overdosing.
I remember her calling me into her room and telling me “I feel like I’ve been run over a truck!” And something else that I don’t remember off the top of my head. Later that day me and my dad went to my grandmas and when we came back, we saw my mom on the floor and we remember her saying that she didn’t even know how she got there. Days after that happened I remember her telling me that she apparently had a seizure when me and my dad were gone, that’s why she was on the floor. It was pretty scary, but I’m used to scary things like this. I’ve been used to messed up things since I was a baby.
Well... That hit hard.
I worked for 7 months in a school for behaviorally and emotionally challenged students, K-12. There were only a couple dozen students, but three of the kids had been the ones who found their moms dead from a drug overdose.
