I just wanted to say thanks for both your teardown and assembly videos. This probably just saved my $200 investment I just made in buying a used PS4. I was in a pawn shop back in May when it was still really hard to find gaming graphics cards or modern gaming consoles for a reasonable price when I came across this OG PS4 that was being pulled from the display case. I knew it was probably something wrong with it but I got the clerk to let me test it anyway. They had it marked as didn't play discs at first but the disc went in ok. I didn't notice how loud it was in the store so when I brought it home a couple of weeks ago I saw the real problem. As soon as I turned it on it sounded like a jet engine. I played it like that for a few days but it seemed to get louder. So I started looking into repair videos. I work on computers so I knew it was probably overheating and would give me problems soon. I hate working on anything like consoles or laptops with little ribbon cables to deal with. I watched both your videos and it gave me the confidence to take on the task. I gave my PS4 a good clean and repaste and even added an internal and external SSD and now it's so silent it's scary. I almost thought I forgot to connect something but I clearly remember plugging the fan back in. I've been gaming on it for over two hours now and it's still silent and has not shut down or even gotten louder. Anyway, thanks for the videos.

I just observed something... I feel like the reason the older models sound like a jet is probably because the APU clamp doesn't have an extra plastic piece that holds in more pressure on the APU so that it make perfect contact to the heatsink. If there is no proper contact, your APU gets overheated which makes the fan louder. I have a newer model(not the slim) bought in 2016 and i haven't cleaned in like 4 yrs(did a month ago), yet it doesn't make noise even while playing GOW /TLOU2. Btw it runs almost 24x7 lol

So, after 8 years of service, my PS4 finally got maintenance. The video was very helpful. Thank you! a few tips from me: 1. I do not have small pliers, as in the video, and regular-sized pliers easily break the power supply connector. After a little crackle (my mistake) I gently tugged on the edges of the connector and it came out freely. 2. PS4 fat has several revisions, mine had a couple of extra screws. So you need to remember the location of each screw, it may not be on the video.

alright im gonna say it, if anyones ps4 sounds like a jet engine when playing certain games and you feel like it will or may overheat okay cool thats fine if you wanna open it up and clean it out from dust or change the thermal paste.i just wanna say that you might as well clean the heat sinks if you are changing thermal paste because you are literally 3 screws away if you disassemble your ps4 all the way to the thermal paste part, my heat sink was dusty on one side but not covered in dust, so i cleaned it out, changed the thermal paste using the arctic silver 5 , assemble everything back together , started my ps4 up, and everything was good and quiet , awesome video btw , although if anyone gets to the power supply part and have a hard time getting the battery connector off @6:10 its okay i had a hard time too cause i didnt have the right tools to pull it out and i eventually just used my fingers to pull it out , be careful not to pull the black wires

Hey Steve??? I know this is a very old video, but I am working on a friend's PS4 plus right now. You are the GURU when it comes to these, so I have a question... I have just reassembled and tested - it's beautifully quiet (yay!) but the optical drive seems even worse than before (was a bit 'sticky' but now doesn't draw a disk in. 2 questions if I may... 1. Is it viable to lift out the motherboard while it is still sandwiched between the metal layers (rather than disturb new thermal pads and paste) and 2. Any advice on the disk situation please? Love your videos, will love you long time, 5 dolla!!!

I had so many issues with mine. I don't have anything to pull the cables with, but I managed to remove the power supply, however the cable is so short it didn't really give me enough confidence to keep going. Trying to put it back in 'gently' like other videos said didn't work, so I snapped it back in with some force. The console works, but the case is slightly bent thanks to a torx bit that was stripped by the previous owner. But now I have an actual issue... the eject button seems to be misbehaving, I didn't touch it when cleaning the bottom part of the case, and it beeps thrice, ejects my discs, and then the drive continues to make noises as if trying to eject still. I have a CUH-1106A, I really don't want to go in the thing again and risk damaging it further but the discs ejecting and that noise worry me so much.

I took my ps4 apart and had to put thermo paste in it and when I put it back together the power nor the eject button wanted to work all though the ps4 did turn on. But before I did anything the power and eject worked fine, besides the fan being so loud.

Hi Steve, love the vids and especially your shirts ;) I have this same model PS4 and I took it apart to reapply thermal paste and dust it out. Unfortunately my Blu-ray drive no longer works. I thought it was the metal connector not properly making contact with the daughter board on the drive, but no matter how many times I bend it, adjust it and coax it on to where I 'think' the gold pad on the board is, the eject button does not work. I tried shutting down, inserting the disk most of the way, then turning the unit on. The drive makes noises and eventually spits the disk out, but will not take it in or mount it. I remember you saying something in one of the vids (this one?) about removing the ribbon cable so as not to break off the 'ears'. I thought I was pretty careful, but I'm running out of ideas to get my drive to work. How can you tell if the drive is toast (it was working fine before disassembly) or a ribbon cable issue? If I have broken off the ears, is it easy to tell from looking at the cable? And if so, how to get the broken ears out of the connector? What I would really love is to know what the shape/bend of the metal eject button connector is supposed to look like. A reference photo or illustration you could point me to would be fantastic. Thanks again for these vids.

UPDATE - SUCCESS!! I tested the eject contact on the daughter board which triple-beeped as normal when there is no disk to eject, so I was pretty confident the drive itself was fine. I was quoted $99 by a local console company to repair it, but decided to take a chance on ordering a new bluray drive cable (the wide one) for $8 on amazon. The ears on the new cable were definitely noticeable compared to the almost non-existent ones on the original cable. Carefully inserted both ends and BINGO! disks insert and eject like before. I am supremely overjoyed and thankful for your assistance. :)

+TronicsFix I used GP extreme thermal-pads covering the size of the ram-chips and put a middle sized blob of thermal compound on the APU (Arctic cooling MX-4). finally running like a dream this time! before the changes the fan didnt kick down as fast when i quit the game and stayed on 'stage3' fan speed for a couple of minutes (B-Ops 3, Bloodborne) but now with these changes the fan now immediately kicks down in loading screens or when i quit the game and the fan now never exceeds stage 2 fan speed :) even after hours of playing, the heat from the exhaust is nice and warm meaning the pads and compounds doing its job ... This is even better than I had expected even with a room temperature of 21 degrees celcius (70F)

My PS4 CUH-1115A started over heating like an hour ago and it has me very upset. I usually keep it ventilated (by a window) and I use compressed air when I can. I was just watching this video and I noticed you didn't take out a disk drive without removing the optical drive; can I remove and replace my fan without removing the optical drive then? Can I: 1, just remove the HDD, the motherboard and the metal plate holding the heatsink? Or 2, I have to remove EVERYthing to get the fan out?

Just remove the power supply and remove the motherboard and metal chassis. Keep in mind that removing some cables beforehand such as wifi antenna and power cables will make the disassembly easier

Hopefully you see this and can reply! I bought a second hand ps4 from a friend and its the original launch ps4. Everything worked perfectly except from the fact that it was very, very loud. I'd cleaned the fan multiple times and it made no difference. I saw threads online about cleaning of the heat sink. So I went to one of your videos and followed your instructions on taking apart the ps4. When i got to the motherboard it was really hard to access because the thermal pads were stuck and I had to pull really hard to free the metal plate above the motherboard. Then I got to the thermal paste the motherboard and the metal player underneath were stuck together because of the paste. The motherboard was almost immovable. In all the videos I watched the motherboard was easy to take out but mine I had to pull really hard for the thermal paste to release. I then proceeded to clean the heatsink and the fan. I didnt replace the thermal paste even tho there was barely any left and it was crusty and hard. I put everything back together and now when I turn it on the fan goes full blast, it gives me 3 beeps and the red light of death. Do I need to replace the thermal paste or is it a lost cause? Thanks for responding
