How to fully open up PS3(SLIM) clean up and replace the old thermal compound with the new thermal compound.
Brief Introduction:-
====================
In this video we'll be fully taking apart our PS3(SLIM) console, cleaning up as best as we can & replacing the old thermal compound with the new high quality thermal compound.
A quick note PS3 is a dust house and if not cleaned regularly it can become very dusty and dirty and like any other machine it requires regular servicing as well.
one of the main reasons of system failures or YLOD or any other motherboard issues is the processor becoming way hot, cold solder joints and eventually just giving up. Its advised to clean up atleast once per quarter if you play regularly
By fully cleaning up and placing new thermal compound will ensure that our PS3 remains in great working condition and we do not suffer from YLOD or hopefully any sudden motherboard failures.
Tools Required:-
================
Philips 0,1,2 screwdrivers
Torx T8 screwdriver
Microturn Precision or small Philips flat-head screwdriver
Marker
Small component Utility Box
Isopropyl Alcohol
Cotton Balls
Q Tips
Cleaning Brushes or Low powered vaccum cleaner
Arctic Silver 5
Scrape Tools or plastic card
Description:-
==============
Tutorial contains full information how to carry out thermal compound replacement on PS3(SLIM).
If your PS3 (SLIM) model has any of the following issues then you may require a full service clean up
- Fan makes excessive noise
- System overheats very quickly
- System freezes during any operation after a brief period of time
- Fan struggles to spin or does not spin at all
- Random shut downs
- Game freeze during game play
- Console has not been cleaned
- Console has not been serviced for over a year.
Compatibility:-
================
Following models of PS3(SLIM) are compatible with this video tutorial:-

    Making something broken work again instead of buying a new one is the greatest feeling, especially after your up at 5:00 in the morning continuing to try not willing to accept failure for the day. Thank you, for your video fueled my obsession to fix my PS3 and guided me through it making me a champion cpu chip cooler who earned a well deserved rest to mid day. Now I'm off to enjoy the rest of the day and boast of my accomplishment, still knowing little about the inner workings of the PS3. I have not turned on my PS3 for fear of the realization that it may have already stopped working but I take pride in knowing it worked the last time I checked

    I tried to repair my 60GB "fat" PS3 3 times, couldn't get it to work. Unfortunately, I feel it suffered irreparable CPU damage when it YLOD years before. That or the massive heat sink got bent when I pryed it off. Either way, I sold it on EBay for parts.... I loved that thing, so shiny, so sleek, backwards compatible, such a great console. 😶

    For the CECH 3001A the fan cannot be removed until you remove the bottom plate and expose the cpu/gpu. 4 tiny black screws hold it into the motherboard. Also, the blu ray player requires needle nose plyers to reinstall the big ribbon, which is on the BOTTOM of this model and the ribbon is only 1 inch, or 25mm, long. Note to anyone out there with this model. Other than that, some of the screws are different. Thank you, and great video!

    My Ps3 had no dust in it, rarely used it over the last 3 years. Yet it was overheating and the fan was running at 100% (loud as a vacuum). Even so it would still force shut down the system. Replacing the thermal paste seems like a completely necessary form of maintenance every 2-3 years so I am glad I found your video. My arctic silver has my ps3 running like new now and I feel great knowing I can do it again and again if needed. Thanks for the upload!

    This ps3 must have had more issues than this because it restarted itself once in a while. It acted kind of like a timed bomb, you could play on it for between 20-40 minutes but then it just turned itself off. So sadly this didn't help it, the video is a good one but my ps3 was already doomed it seemed.

    for 320GB models , there are few slight differences, e.g when you open up your console Blu-Ray Drive lens cable is connected to the motherboard. you have to be very careful and connector is fragile There are few different screws in different places. 90% of the process is the same, if you confident opening it up properly then by all means go for it if not, then just wait for our tute to upload It takes an awful lot of time in making a video, HD compilation and uploading so be patient :-) Thanks

    Arctic silver them selves say that you only require a grain of rice sized blob of thermal paste, they also say not to spread it to avoid air bubbles, simply put the blob in the middle of the chips then place the heat sink on top pressing down gently to get good contact, I have had experience with a loud fan on my ps3 I first covered the whole chip with artic 5 and made no difference, tried the grain of rice technique, worked straight away and that's with arctic silver before its even cured.

    few options you can try use a bigger size Philips screwdriver and try to unscrew it, you only have to unscrew it so thats its not stiff, once the stiffness is losen up you can lift up from your fingers you can try using pliers and try to unscrew it if possible just destroy the screw using good pliers and cut it and take it out

    First off thank you for this video, it was very helpful and informative with good detail. Iv'e had my PS3 slim for roughly 2yrs 9 months now. My PS3 is starting to get very hot just after 1 hour of sitting idle. It used to take 8 hours of continuous play before it would reach roughly that same point. Also if i play a blu ray movie and then play a game for 45 min the system will get hot enough to kick the fan into max settings. Is this severe enough to attempt this repair or should I hold off?

  • @GameConsoleRepairs

    @Mark Sulley You heat the board only in critical conditions e.g motherboard, CPU, GPU failure otherwise you never heat it. This is only to clean up and do a service on your console just like a regular car service.

    Dont worry about that little screw. you can leave it. I can totally understand sometimes if you are not using HIGH QUALITY and RIGHT screw drivers it stuffs up the screw and becomes a nightmare to take it off. as long as you got it off its fine and leave it and simply place the PSU and it should work .

    What other suggestions do you have? I followed all your steps to a T, booted up PS3, and it's not staying on more than about 10-30 seconds before powering right back down. I have tried 2 power surges, 2 different locations, checked power cord has lines up :/ (someone said make sure power cord is set properly). I've cleaned all dust inside. I was careful with all my steps. But even after cleaning (I did that yesterday) and now using arctic silver 5 (today), same behavior. :( What are the symptoms for a bad hard drive? What are the symptoms for bad power supply? I don't know what else could be wrong. I can get to the main screen (by holding power button ... beeps twice), but as soon as any of the restore options begin, the console just powers down. I'm on the 120GB slim. I'm about ready to send it into PS3. Even a local shop quoted me (over the phone) 80-100 or more. Sony told me 100 and they'll warranty their work for a year. Thanks.

    Yeller lighter depth. Always blow electronics with appropriate electronics air, never vacuum electronics. Also you don't have to spread the compound. That was the cause of the problem in many cases. It touches the board and tells it it's overheating. "pea size" right in the center is fine. It's ok to flatten it a bit, but do not spread towards the edges, The heat comes directly from the center only. Also i like electronics cleaner better than alcohol, because it gets any missed compound off the board.

    Yes thats Reball Procedure. We are in the process its not easy to show all the steps required to perform such procedures. even though we make a video on how to repair via Reball 1. Its not cost-effective you'll be needing a Reball Station costs $3000+ for a basic level station and then there are tons of other things required. 2. its need experience and high level of expertise to perform such operations. Its recommended to leave it to the PRO's for such operations as it will be way cheaper.

    🤔 I've heard Sony puts these in to confuse people who repair their own Playstation instead of taking it to a Genuine Sony Repairer... Just kidding 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 😬 Ooops!

    Is it mandatory to spread the thermal paste? I’ve watched so many videos on what type of paste to use and what amount, I haven’t seen many saying spread it.

    Would using the dot method on the thermal compound suffice? Or is this method suggested?

    Is the isopropyl alcohol necessary? I never use any of that when i replace my thermal compound on the pc and it works fine.

    It's only a couple dollars at your local grocery store and just makes cleaning the crusty cpu and heat sinks easier.

    I liked the video. One question. The video I just saw is to fix the YLOD? If so, on a scale of 1-10, how hard/easy will it be for a first timer, like myself, to fix? I've just gotten my hdd repaired along with my blu-ray. Also, sorry for rambling, I also bought 3 BRAND NEW games just recently so Im just furious. How much will it cost for all tools? Thanks :-)

    @Ghork123 Not much - a small layer and then just spread it as shown in the video

    I need some tips or help. I applied thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. I reassembled the PS3. It played the PS3 games it was playing before, (using hair dryer to bypass the ylod) then the PS3 suddenly turned off. After it shut off on me, I haven’t been able to get it to display on my TV anymore and it freezes anytime i press the power button on. Please help before I drop the PS3 outside my 7 story window.
