The thing with PS is because their comsole architecture is so different they never fully plan out backwards compatibility unfortunately. Better late than never at least

Native backwards compatibility isn't possible on the PS5, it doesn't have the PS3's Cell CPU, PS2's Emotion Engine and the PS1's LSI R3000. It will likely just be emulation and ports. Most likely Sony will just port PS Now games over to the store, develop their in-house emulator a bit more and call it a day. The best option today is PC and Mobile. Just run emulators on them, Anbernic has turned this into a business. Native Backwards Compatibility would be a dream true, but unlikely to see happen.

if sony made a fully backwards compatible console that had every home console (and maybe a digital store for the handheld titles) it would 100% be the best of the playstations it sucks not being able to play multiple generations on 1 system without some form of homebrew, modding or emulating

It is possible, PS1 is Risc Based which is open source, no licensing required, the PS2 has an in-house CPU Emotion Engine made by Sony themselves and Toshiba, the Cell CPU on the PS3 was made by Sony, Toshiba and IBM so they may have to get in talks with IBM to remake that CPU, The PSP CPU is similar to the PS1 it's a Risc based Mips CPU and lastly the Vita is Arm based Arm Cortex A9 they can replicate those two chips into there next handheld. Sony could remake all these CPU's if they tried. Combine them into 1 APU like chip, get it to work with the AMD APU for Graphics or use, some type of custom chip to replicate the graphics like an Asic or an FPGA chip to Render games at higher resolutions and perhaps even higher framerates. Problem is, what would the cost be for all this? Will Sony even bother? When they can just remaster and remake games, port old games over digitally to sell at a full price. The great thing about native backwards compatibility is Sony can port hundreds of games over to their store. But they still likely aren't going to care. PC is the way forward for new hardware and games, it does everything these consoles do plus more like emulation, and keep your old systems when you want to pull out your old games. If Sony managed to pull off something this spectacular, it would easily be the best console ever made, I would buy it day 1.

​@@thatfamouslakeSony would most likely pick the sloppy option or try to get you to buy their PS Now streaming service. The Sony that made the PS3 Vs the Sony now is not the same Sony anymore.

There's a good reason why they have never made an official PS3 "emulator" for current gen until now, as PS3 had an extremely odd custom cpu architecture, and even to this day emulating PS3 on PC needs a lot of hardware overhead to run decently, it's not as simple as "oh it's Sony, they should be able to just flawlessly emulate PS3 on PS5" as PS5 is still at best comparable to a midrange pc, so if they're actually bringing out emulation for current gen, it's very likely they've been working on this since the release of PS5, while on the other hand, Microsoft had spent tons of resources and years into making compatibility packs for OG Xbox and 360 games for the Xbox one. It's not as simple as you think. it's easy to criticise when you don't know how emulation works.

Yep, you are right, the CELL architecture its very very difficult to emulate and you need an AVX-512 processor to run smooth on PCs.

@@TechOrionater enough to understand that it's not easy to achieve, specially emulation on a console. I also think that what he mentioned about PS4 emulated on XBOX is fake, as there's not even an emulator on pc that can run triple A titles like GOW, the only one available is on very early development and can only run a couple simple indies, so he probably saw someone play it on xbox one with geforce now and just thought it's emulation on xbox.

@@graffittitagger65 There is a big excuse, PS3 used the CELL architecture, its very hard to emulate it, even on PC for the best perfomance you need a cpu that supports AVX-512, on ps4 it was impossible to do it, and I bet even on PS5 there will be games that emulator will not play. Also I think the PS3 emulation will only come to PS5 PRO hardware, PS3 disk will not be playable on older models of PS5, you need a chip that decrypts the discs. Xbox was made on x86 from the beginning, except the Xbox 360 that was made on PowerPC, and even that its MUCH MUCH easier to emulate. Every developer talked about how hard it is to make games for PS3.

It wont. There is a chip that decrypts discs, it will only work if Sony planned it from launch. But I bet that will be a feature for the next ps5 models.
