PS2 Disc Cleaning Series: Part 1- The Intro

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Part 1 of a multi-part video series on PS2 discs!
This one's going to be a series and a half! PS2 have 5 different types of discs, and we're going to cover each and every one, as well as cover every issue you might run into! (Assuming I can find a disc with every issue you can run into).
I love the PS2 library, but those discs are getting up in age now, and more often than not they need some cleaning! So let's get into it!
BUT. You'll notice something a little different in this video. I use cotton balls. Later on in this series I will show you all how to do something that has been wildly demanded. SO STAY TUNED!!
Tools I use! And affiliated links to buy them on Amazon!
(Let me know if you are outside of the US, I have suggested tools for most international countries too!)

    Okay so I’m slowly getting the gist of it, but still need guidance. So I have a bunch of PS2 games that need cleaning and I’ve attempted at two games: Spiderman 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean Legend of Jack Sparrow (great games oof). And so I followed ur tutorial, did everything and put it in the PS2 and it didn’t work, so I did it again couple times and still didn’t work. So I left it for the day and said okay I’ll try tomorrow cuz it was late anyway. But I realised something as well, I have Fast and Furious (PS2) and it was super scratched up so I ran my finger on it, and could feel the scratches. I did the same for the polished games I did the other day and felt no scratches, so my buffing worked. But how come it didn’t work on the PS2? Do I have to polish it again? I remember you saying it’s not a guarantee to work and have to try couple times. Thanks for your time and patience! I’m glad I found your channel!! Also what should I avoid doing the most. Like what should I not do which will make the game not work at all.

  • @RestoreAndReplay

    @RestoreAndReplay

    Жыл бұрын

    Yep, sounds like you should give it another polish! But also, you might want to clean off the lens of the PS2. What'll happen to me sometimes when I've cleaned a ton of discs is that the console's lens will get some small traces of residue from the discs. A quick wipe of the lens, a wipe down of the discs, and maybe another round of polish on that Fast and Furious disc and I betcha it'll come back to life! Big things to avoid with discs are touching the shiny surface (the data side), and not keeping a disc in it's case. The PS2s are notorious for collecting dust inside too, so cleaning the insides out is always a good option. And make sure the discs stay nice and dry too!

    Hello ! Thansk for this helpful video. Since 2014 I search Ps2 games and progressively learn how to clean them. I was knowing about using a non abrassive micofiber and making straight line from interior to exterior. But... recently i read that ammoniac was dangerous and infortunaltely i used ajax (with amoniac) on most of my games. Actually they're looking great and work well but I'm worried about long term.. If there any risk of disc degradation because of that ? Thank you.

  • @RestoreAndReplay

    @RestoreAndReplay

    Жыл бұрын

    You def do not want to use ajax or ammonia on polycarbonate surfaces. That can damage the plastics in the long run. But, if you do have any surfaces that have been cleaned with those, an alcohol wipe and a light resurfacing will remove any potential troublemakers.

    @@RestoreAndReplay Thank you. Huu that's a terrible new.... i made this on an hundred of games 3-4 monts ago. How to proceed ? I made some search and for alcohol wipe, i can use isopropyl on a microfiber ? Is light resurfacing absolutly needed ? Because the games are very clean so maybe juste isopropyl will work. Another question, how to identify the amonia effect on a game ? Did it make some particular shape)/color effect on the disc ? For the moment the only thing i can see on my games is the microfiber path but i can see this only when i lightly blow on the game (as if i wanna quickly clean them). @@tultoneytp738 Iso won't do anything for scratches, you need an aggregate for that. The nice thing about hand resurfacing is that you are in control of how much pressure and compound you use, so you can absolutely do as light of a polishing as you'd like! For ammonia damage to most polycarbonates, you'll see it as clouding or streaking. But cleaning the surface with alcohol should remove that residue!

  • @RestoreAndReplay

    That absolutely is supposed to happen! Micro scratches come from the cloth you are using. The idea is that you will remove the deeper larger scratches first, then focus on the finer ones (and the ones you caused), just a part of polishing!

    Great video! I have an Xbox 360 game that just won't install all the way, it always stops at 29%. I just bought the Novus cleaner and try applying it like 5 times and it still won't install all the way. It did get rid of the scratches. Do you know why it keeps stopping at 29%? Could it be something else on the disc besides those scratches that are causing it?

  • @RestoreAndReplay

    @RestoreAndReplay

    11 ай бұрын

    If it's constantly stopping at 29% it can be one of two things. 1. a scratch, buuut #2 it can also be an issue with the install file being only partial. So you'll want to wipe all install files completely and try installing it again. Otherwise the system will run across that old install portion and get confused.

    I just bought a PS2 slim to give to my grandson along with about 20 PS2 games i had bought for my PS2 fat. My one Metal Gear Solid 2 game did when you're saying, and would stop at the same point every time. I thought it was the player I had just bought used off eBay. The disc is pristine, no scratches at all. But always stopped at the same spot. I washed it with dish soap, thinking its been sitting for 10 years and has a film on it or something. Did the same thing again same point it stopped and a little disc and question mark popped up on the screen. I hoped it was the disc and not the player. So I put in another Metal Gear Solid 3 disc and played it for about 2 hours with 0 stops. So I tried toothpaste. Worked on it like polishing compound. Just with my thumb and adding a little water to fine out the toothpaste. About 3 times then dry and buff with old cotton t-shirt. I played it right through the bad part and 2 hours past. Still working now. Knock on wood. So toothpaste does work. The grit in toothpaste is very fine. Some more than others. So always thin with water just a little if it starts to dry. But it does work. And, makes your discs smell minty fresh. 😂

    Alright so that works. BUT it works in that you can get basically one or two good reads from it. After some time it can cause longterm issues on the surrounding polycarbonate. Weirdly enough, I've used it to recover cracked discs to get a single final good read out of it. But ulitmately the goal is to just keep pure polycarbonate on the surface without any additives. (But in working with the ReDump/NoIntro guys, sometimes you have to take extra steps to get a read from a heavily damaged disc).
