PS1 Games That Aged BEAUTIFULLY
Ойындар
Truly great games never fully lose what made them great. Time may age the graphics and controls to some degree, but if you’re the sort of person who can appreciate a classic in the context of its era, the PS1 is still an awesome place to spend your free time.

PS1 RPGs have aged gracefully

Suikoden I is pretty good too. I’m currently playing it for the first time, and afterwards I’m playing II. There are a few more 2D and 2.5D PS1 RPGs lined up (e.g. Wild Arms).
Oddworld Abe's Oddyssey/Exoddus and Heart of Darkness still look amazing today.

Nop, they would just be milking the fans. Those games are perfect the way they are. They can make a new sequals, but shouldn't touch or remake those classics.
So many are great, FF Tactics, Valkyrie Profile, Darkstalkers 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Elemental Gearbolt, and so many others.
@erakfishfishfish

I preferred Street Fighter Alpha 2 over 3, but both were excellent games,
Both Oddworld games will always be beautiful and enjoyable
Alundra for me, gorgeous pixel art which still looks amazing today.
The two first (and IMO, best) Legacy of Kain games, Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, are still fantastic to this day. In fact, Blood Omen was recently (finally) released on GOG, and I bought it day one and played it through one more time. And it was every bit as awesome as it was 25+ years ago.
Final Fantasy Tactics. Modern strategy RPG basically look the same and play with the same principles. Their stories are as mature as FFT's was. So basically, developers are basically making the same game 27 years later.
I'll admit the graphics were chunky but the Bushido Blade games are still fun to play!

Nobody could disagree with Suikoden 2, man that game is glorious.
Castlevania sotn is a work of art and is a masterpiece. You can use randomizers and make the game more enjoyable . The game has a lot of replay value

All the footage of Digimon World right at the start is unlocking so many memories.
Ace Combats and Twisted Metals aged well imo. They look good and are smooth for the time, and genre remains relatively unchanged.. Also want to add Silent Bomber, V-8, Intelligent Qube, Tony Hawk, Incredible Crisis, Medievil, Pacman World, NFS3, Spyros, Ape Escape all aged damn well too.
With proper upscaling and/or filters the SNES and PS1 Era look almost as good as the modern games in that style.

Would love if Sony made a ps1 and ps2 console with an upscale HDMI port built in… would totally buy that
@Daiyve
13 күн бұрын
@@artofmanslife I'd love that too, but the third-party upscalers sell for hundreds of dollars so this console would be priced similar to a modern console. Would be better if Sony just enabled official emulators on the PS5 and added a software based upscaler, which would be no big deal. Then they could just put the old games on a digital store without having to individually "remaster" anything. And I think they would make more money having a massive catalog of original games than a smaller selection of "HD remasters" and ports. For these frustrating reasons I just emulate. I also enjoy romhacks that can add english translations or fix bugs.
Some other less talked about great PS1 RPGs that imo are masterpieces and hold up incredibly well today. Are Grandia, Vandel Hearts, and Arc the Lad 2! I might even argue that Arc of Lad 2 might just be one of the greatest SRPGs ever created, and I don't think hardly anyone has ever played it! The one flaw it has is you have to play the extremely underwhelming Arc of Lad 1 to get the full story of 2 haha. But it is a really short game, so not too bad.
We have aged, not the games.
Fantastic collection of choices.
Great video guys!
*fawns in Ridge Racer Prototype 4* 😍
Hello! Great video, these retro games are fascinating
Resident evil 3 aged really well!
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I highly recommend playing these games on retroarch with crt shaders. The shaders really clean up the image for 2D games like Castlevania and 3D games like Crash can be upscaled to look clearer and sharper. The emulated ps1 can even be overclocked so that some games like Jumping Flash can achieve higher framerates(60fps on ps1!).
The Adventure of Little Ralph, Harmful Park and many more 2D games that never got a U.S release. Playstation of America went all in with 3D games at that time. There were so many 2D games we didn't get here. The PS1 perfected 2D games and were infants with 3D games.
I still can't get over that I missed out on half of Symphony of the Night because I had no idea that Richter Belmont was the "bad ending" and there was a ton of game left. Why they deceived the player with a potential 200% completion ranking is beyond me.
as i was watching this i was sat here thinking " i cant believe youve not even mentioned CastleVania sotn" then BOOM its number 1. i played this for the first time the other week and finished it at 180% and man what a Game!. the pixel art is stunning. the music is bliss! just all of it is amazing. even if i did manage to cheese though a couple boss's lol
The thing with CC is that there's NO RPG like it. Like, with other games like the FF entries, Suikoden, the SaGas, they are great but not precisely unique, but CC just plays so different, their ideas are so radically different...that's why it wasn't as well received at first as a sequel for CT, but it has gained a following over time. Absolute masterpiece.
R4. I can still play that for a full evening.
I had a demo disc and played metal Gear solid demo so many times... Good times
I was just talking to my brother about how sotn and megaman x4 were both genre defining and still arguably unmatched. great video
Bloody Roar 1 and 2 were such fun fighters. Also, I’m in the niche crowd that loved Intelligent Qube. It;s a must play for people who like block droppers like Tetris and Puyo.

Magical drop and devil dice are fun puzzle games
Should have mentioned all of the classic Tomb Raider games, from 1 to 5. They are still excellent games, even better than some current ones, and I still played them to this day.
That’s great to hear so many people like Tomba. I bought that game from the bargain bin and tried for months to 100% it. I never got the gold medal on the race 😅
This is a VERY respectable list IMO. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Breath of Fire 4, Mega Man Legends 2, Alundra, etc. So many great games that have aged great imo
Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier 2 are both absolutely gorgeous even today
A single Freedom note. Im dying lol. What a wonderful play on words.
Valkyrie Profile is another RPG that is just perfect even today
Valkyrie Profile and Legend Of Mana has aged quite nicely. I also think that Koudelka still holds up.
EInhander was a great game that went a bit under the radar in It's time. A side scrolling shooter reminiscent of Gradius, Einhader had a badass soundtrack, great visuals and solid gameplay. 10/10 will play again... right now actually, before I go to bed.
SO MANY of these I haven't played yet. Why can't I have infinite time at my disposal? is that too much to ask? it is? oh right, makes sense.
The best thing about Symphony of the Night is that is has been re-released a few times, so it's actually a fair bit easier to pick up the game outside of the PS1. My personal favorite version is the Dracula X Chronicles version on the PSP. Also, as far as the list goes, I'd like to add these games: - Klonoa - Spyro 1-3 - R-Type Delta - Parasite Eve - Wild Arms 2 - Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (not exactly in the grapical department, but hey, MGS isn't exactly a looker anymore either, lol)
I bought my loose copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night at GameStop just before I graduated from high school. This was 20 years ago. I'm so lucky to have the game at all. Don't really care about having a complete copy since I just wanted to play the game. If the early '80s were the Golden Age of gaming, the '90s were the Platinum Age.
You reminded me of mentioning Future Cop Lapd, and then i remembered R Type Delta on the ps1. And then I remembered playing this open world 🌎 hover game... what was it called: V2000.

WOW V2000! now that's a blast from the past
Great selection and video. I vote Tomb Raider 4, as its kind of the swansong for a certain kind of 3rd person adventure game that you don't see anymore. You have to do all the work and set up the jumps and vaults whereas a newer ps3 or 4 era game would have you just holding the action button and going in a direction doing fancy parkour stuff. Beautiful scenery and levels like in the earlier games but with better graphics and more fluid gameplay to back it up.

Will always love the PS1 'look' .Those Crispy graphics with low res textures (with the signature texture warping) still look fantastic. The MGS 1 intro was something else for the first time playing, and R Racer type 4 was (and still is) one of the best Ridges. Soul Calibur was also top tier. Cheers vultures 👍😉 Edit:wait! Soul Reaver and Spyro also. Why did I get rid of my PS1?!
Sad there’s no Klonoa on here
Played Parasite Eve a few months ago and was completely addicted. Amazing game.
i have to put my vote in vagrant story as one of the best looking games for ps1

Twisted Metal 2/World Tour and Darkstalkers. Oh and the opposite if Whoopie would be Melancholy 👌
Threads of Fate i admit with some help in duckstation can look like even a todays indie title i mean, can look beutiful, Dragon Valor i think looks quite nice or if Megaman then legends 1-2 looks alright, 40 winks, Soul Reaver, Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, Nightmare Creatures 2 i think has great graphics, but its kinda like released in the last stages of PS1 life or more like the end, so no wonder there i guess. Tai fu, Tail Concerto looking good i think. For me at least. I dont know there are many more that with some little lightweight tweeking u can get suprisingly great results, u almost forget that its a 20+ year old game in some cases. Anyway theres lot more to choose from. So u can do a lot of these videos :), like part 2-3-4 etc. :)
Grand Turismo 2 is worth mentioning too due to the graphics
Apparently Tomba and Tomba 2 is getting a remaster / port this year. So anyone that missed out, now's your chance.
I still play X4 from time to time, and even though I probably won't replay again SOTN, I think it's the best game on the PS1.
Sh1 is not aged so well. Tank control and jancky animations, they really should remake this game instead of sh2
I only ever played the demo for Tomba, I was never able to find the game itself but I did manage to get the sequel when it came out and I loved it, I didn't know the Developer went bankrupt after it. Also Vagrant Story should really be on this list over some of the others and that's coming from someone who never actually played it so it's not nostalgia talking. It has a unique gameplay system and a very unique art style that holds up much better than the majority of PS1 games and certainly better than half the games on this list. Chrono Cross? Seriously, I get that it's a classic but it doesn't actually look or play much different than any of the PS1 Final Fantasy titles, the only thing it does somewhat differently is it's story.
I might be in the minority but Megaman Legends 2 might not hit in the graphic scale but man is that game fun
Vagrant Story should have been number one on the list
Great list, but I dont get one thing you did, when you included crash you included the whole trilogy, why not handle megaman the same way then and have counted x4-x6? I would not say the ps1 sequels games got worse looking....
Einhänder is still a looker
Wow 2D is beautiful on ps1
Einhander and R-type Delta!!!
Tecmo’s Deception series are amazingly fun games but their graphics and clunkiness could really use a modern touch.
The game Loaded in the emulator DuckStation could pass as a modern indie title. And so could Shipwreckers / Overboard and Croc: Legend of the Gobbos.
Gimme some Lunar Silver Star Story and Ridge Racer 4! I’ll play them (and all my PS1 games) on my PS3. Looks great, sounds great!

Happy to see JoJo's Bizarre Adventure! Though it definitely has many weaknesses compared to the Arcade version. Still, pretty good port with some additional content and nice visuals and animation and an easy to learn, hard to master gameplay.
Tomb Raider 2-5 look great in retrospect, 1 is a little clunkier but they greatly improved them in a short time. Resident Evil 2 also looks fantastic. 3 too, but it's not as good.
Crash games are spectacular
I dont remember seeing Medievil 2 in this.....
id love to buy symphony of the night but it cost so much
R-Type Delta
Don't really agree with a few choices on this list. It doesn't mean I think they are bad, or that I don't enjoy playing them, or didn't at the time they were released. But Metal Gear Solid for example I don't think it's aged particularly well. Lot's camera issues that rear it's ugly head in later areas of the game that can cause frustration mostly because of hardware limitations. Silent Hill is extremely clunky in the combat department. I also think Chrono Cross aged really poorly with it's slow combat and slow loading times (At least on original hardware) To me it felt like a chore to play through because of that, despite liking the story. I do agree with Suikoden II though, beautiful pixel art, great story, fast and enjoyable turn based combat. In fact most JRPGS on the ps1 will have aged well outside of a select few. Which sadly I include Chrono Cross as part of ones that haven't aged well. Legend of Legaia is one I loved as a kid but man...them long load times going in and out of battles and how frequent they are hurt the experience today as well. Keep in mind my judgement is based on the original PS1, current remasters might be different with speed up options, and potentially faster load times.
