PS1 Games Run at 50Hz on PS Plus Regardless of Region - What Are Sony Playing At?

So a few people have now managed to get a look at Sony's revamped Playstation Plus Service and some of them have noticed that Playstation One games are the PAL versions running at 50Hz instead of the NTSC versions running at 60Hz... No matter what region you are in. But why would Sony do this?

I was watching Mystic's latest video where he mentioned this issue. It's so bizarre they decided to go down this route. Difficult to make sense of really.

It honestly beggars belief; I think they are just being lazy because they just don't care.

Maybe that's why they're building a game preservation team. Because they managed to screw this pretty simple request up for proper backwards compatibility implementation.

Very bizarre decision from Sony given everything runs at 60 or faster these days even with multiple languages on the pal versions this just seems like they can't be asked to make an effort guess will see if they fix this in the future

There are reasons..we just dont know them...why would they do this otherwise?

I agree. I'm sure there are reasons for this. I'm just not sure they are very good ones. You'd have thought they would have learned from the flac they got when they released the Playstation Mini but nope.

I’ve been playing PS1 on PSN for years, even have a ton of videos to prove it. I think it’s something to do with their emulator. Some do run at 60Hz, so that’s false, but the ones that do suffer from occasional slowdown, e.g. Spyro the Dragon. Anyway, this is not something to get worked up about imo. The difference between 50Hz and 60Hz is barely noticeable unless you’re actively looking for it. You’re clearly a PAL gamer like me, so you wouldn’t have even seen 60Hz on consoles until at least the PS2, and that would have only been with certain titles. I’ve had many, many thousands of views on my 50Hz videos, no complaints yet, but I’ve started recommending that people change their monitor refresh to 50Hz, for a slightly smoother viewing experience. Also, contrary to popular belief, 50Hz doesn’t slow the game down. 60Hz and 50Hz run at the same speed on PlayStation hardware. It might occur in older systems where the internal clock syncs to the refresh rate of the TV, but I think with PlayStation hardware the refresh rate just determines the FPS displayed on the TV, not the duration of the game itself. Don’t quote me on that, as I could be wrong, but I’ve never seen a noticeable speed difference and no-one has ever told me there is one, most of my viewers are NTSC.

Digital foundry disagrees with you. I'll check out your channel, though.

@@JoeChip Digital Foundry are tech heads who analyse using software tools and are actively looking for differences. The average viewer isn't. Most people probably don't even bother to check the frame rate of the video they're watching, and most casual viewers would have a hard time telling the difference. In fact, without frame counters, frame displays etc, even the tech heads would have a hard time, I'm sure. Especially when it comes to minor 5-10 fps differences. I can sort of tell the difference, but that's only through years of analytically watching my content for errors, I don't watch other people's in the same way. Even then, I need the aforementioned tools for confirmation.

Well, in this instance I think hate would be a trifle over the top but people are certainly a bit disappointed. As well they should be. It's a bloody stupid move by Sony and one that would be so easily remedied.
