PS Audio System Upgrade

Фильм және анимация

Watch Scott McGowan, the designer and creator of Sprout, take us with him as he sets up a suite of PS Audio's best gear in his own home. Giving us a look at what a huge difference an upgrade in an audio system can make.
I am getting close to publishing my memoir! It's called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you've never known before.
I plan a few surprises for early adopters, so go to www.paulmcgowan.com and add your name to the list of interested readers. There's an entire gallery of never before seen photos too.

    I started out with a purple Panasonic pocket-transistor radio as a kid and played Elvis and James Brown records on my mother's stereo console in the living room. Today I still have my vintage McIntosh MX113, MC275 and Rogers JR149s. My last upgrade was adding a Sunfire Signature Subwoofer in 1998. I'm looking forward to the upcoming PS Audio AN3 loudspeakers and hope to be ready for a major upgrade if they are as good as Paul says they'll be.

    The Technics SL-1200s were designed to "ignore" all of that feedback. I had an SL-1200 MK7 a while ago, and when I'd slap the surface it sat on, not a single thump would pass through to the sound. Those things are magicians when it comes to isolation.

    A great setup possibly underperforming due to a very 'live' and rather small(ish) room. IMHO, to fully appreciate a system such as this you DO need to kill all the reflections that are very audible in your video, as well as, give those great speakers room to 'breath' away from walls etc. Yet, if you're happy with the sound, who am I to spoil your excitement? Well done!

    Hi Scott... I made a typo error in my last message... I have a Tec SL1214 Mk2 ... I use two cartridges with it .. the original one which is the same as yours and another one (which I prefer) which is a Shure RXT-6 fitted with a stabilizer brush ... I didn't like the M44-7 because it had too much bass emphasis ( desirable for dj rave ups but definitely not for us audiophiliacs..!! ) I also have a vintage ( and in mint condition btw ) a Garrard 401 fitted with an SME 30009 tone arm with a Shure V-15 III cartridge.. I use this for transcription purposes only ... the stylus tracks the Shure track ability test record at all levels perfectly ..!! Your setup must have a 'brick wall" high order HPF above 30 Hz .. that would explain the immunity to rumble and other external influences ... Btw... I am a recording/acoustic engineer .. working in Sony Music in Sydney and Melbourne ...

    Sounded great, even through a tv soundbar. P.S. i got a very unexpected & (shockingly) noticable & upgrade in all round sound quality just for taking my turntable off it's dedicated hi-fi rack's spiked top shelf & placing it on a steel t/table shelf designed to screw into a load-bearing wall. (Even better than some cartridge upgrades)

    nicely done... am sure it sounds great. The RS 4.5s are on my "bucket list" of speakers... super rare and very limited production... and I've read that their imaging is stunning & that they were a pretty significant improvement over the Quantum QLS-1s. It's kindof amusing to me that the speakers are the least expensive part of the system... but hey, that's the way this hobby is! Interesting to note that you are not using the external/active crossover for the 4.5s, though some say they sound better without it. But yea... everything I've seen/read indicates that the 4.5s really benefit from high end electronics... you definitely succeeded there! My "inner audiophile" loves the system you've assembled (and would love to hear it!)... tho my "practical side" balks at nearly $60k worth of electronics backing a pair of speakers that can be had for a few thousand (if you can find them!). Nonetheless... great system... hope you enjoy it!

    By sitting that close to the RS 4.5's, probably most of the high frequencies are hitting the back wall. You should experiment with toe-in. Those speakers would sound even better if you could get them farther away from the rear wall, since they are a partial dipole, but it appears you may be room limited there. Nice system.

    Fun Video Scott.. I'm new to the world of "high-end" audio and am curious about the world of "Vintage Infinity" speakers. As the energy behind the Sprout, and the kit PSAudio sold with the Elac speakers, I'm wondering how you would compare the "Audiophile-ness" of your vintage infinity RS4.5 speakers and speakers similar to Elac? How is its imaging, resolution, resolving power, holographic quality, etc. in comparison?

  • @scottmcgowan987

    @scottmcgowan987

    6 жыл бұрын

    I have mad love for the ELAC speakers, and listened to them for years! I think they're a great pairing with Sprout and for the money you're not likely to do much better for a bookshelf system. Having said that, with the addition of nearly $50,000 worth of gear, with proper setup, a dedicated 20A line, and all new speaker cables and interconnects, AND the floor-standing IRS 4.5s, the system did indeed improve dramatically--no question about it. It had BETTER for that kind of $$ :-) Without hyperbole, the imaging became laser-focused, especially with some nice toe-in after the video. The bass resolution is not apples and oranges...it's apples and...uranium...the difference is so profound. Not because the bass is augmented (Sprout has plenty of bass response) but the sheer power behind the BHK M300's simply allows for more control over all 4 of the 12" subs...something the ELACs don't have. Forget the EDM/Hip Hop, just a 6-string guitar or a grand piano is impressive all the way to the lowest registers. These are the attributes which give setting to the listening experience. When you feel like you can HEAR the venue? The toe-tapping on stage? That's what unfolded in my home, and the difference was profound! Thanks for the great question!

    Abit of toe in would help too. As some room treatment right besides the speakers...

    Watch Scott McGowan, the designer and creator of Sprout, can the $599. system for a $38,000. system, and be amazed how well the new system sounds...... Amazing video, I would have never thought that could be true...

    What really surprises me is that you would need a Noise Harvester, if you have a power regenerator. There should be NO noise out of the generator at all.................

    39K system I guess on today's standard this setup is quite a bargain. Looks like you need to get higher grade speaker wires and interconnects. I got to believe that system sounds amazing. Now we lnow why you have a dedicated 20 amp circuit to your system. :}

    After I win the lottery and build that school for the orphans I’m definitely replicating your system Scott, it’s dreamy 🖤 I’m surprised you can get decent results in that room though, sounds like a hard and brittle echo chamber when you are talking.

    Thanks for the feedback guys! Step one was the 20A line. Step two was components upgrades. Speaker placement, room correction, acoustic treatment, and upgraded power cables and interconnects shall be next! We hope you enjoy the iterative process with us!

    I just don't see anyone, ever, making that type of upgrade. It's like going from a Kia to a Ferrari. Who would do that? Or, "gee, I like taking pictures on my phone, I'd like to take better pics, I'll go directly to the top of the line Nikon setup".

    2:03 ... Your 20 amp power cord has an incorrect male plug on the outlet end. This plug should have the normal ground prong and also the two other prongs should be at right angles to each other with the "hot" prong on the right side from the rear.

    Ofcourse he has, brick wall behind the speakers in what looks to be a square room with possibly another brick wall opposing it. I have a concrete wall behind my seating possition in my room and it took alot of work taking out the first refelctions to get it controlled somewhat.

    What are using for a microphone because I’ve noticed in your recordings when you try to have your audience hear your music it sounds like a transistor battery powered radio inside a cardboard box. Try upgrading and researching microphones and recording equipment in proper placement for pick up

    Seems to me, I'd worry about all the echo in the room before I'm worrying about the components in the system. Again it might just because watching this on KZread gives that impression but to have a solid brick wall in back isn't the best in any real-world situation! That room needs a lot of carpeting or something!
