I wish I was there to take those cuts for grafting on my persimmon tree! PLEASE let me know HOW I can pay you to mail me such cuts-of course much smaller size like 10” each.

Be careful when heading branches since those are parts that carry flower buds.

I had to give my new persimmon support after we got some wind from a hurricane...so I can see what you mean about them being weak.

Ross, do you think that a summer pruning to keep the aggressive shoots in check will help make your job easier with the more structural pruning in the winter? I don't think you have to be as selective in summer pruning, just keep the shoots from getting very long.

I bought a fuyu back in April this year .The darn tree didnt flush any new leaves. Held all the leaves until last month they fell off. I am just watching to see if it flushes out in the spring.Any thoughts?

Persimmons are deciduous too. They are one of the last trees to wake up in spring.

Good camera work for this video . The camera person seemed to understand what you were trying to explain and keep moving to get the best shot for your explanation.

If this tree were in an area protected from wind you would leave the scaffolding branches longer?

I just got a persimmon tree with very tall center stalk with no small branch growth, just a single pointing upward stem. Very very tall. Looks bit awkward. Could I dead head the central stalk? Or would this kill the upward growth?

Actually after seeing this video you did deadhead the central stalk so I guess I should be ok. It’s so tall I want it to be wider. Thanks!!

Can you make an update video on your persimmon tree. I'm curious to see it now in May 2019. I'm still waiting on my Tanenashi to wake up.

There was some small shoots that you cut them because they would grow and cross other limbs in next year, well i let them be till they really start to cross each other; why I'm doing this is i want fruit from this tree and i learned that if you cut small one year olds you gonna have less persimmons next fall. I like to hear what you think about my method.

Not really sure what to think. Less fruit isn't always bad for a young tree.

You're pruning this Fuyu in such a way that you won't get fruit for a long while, maybe years, so I take it you want this to be ornamental for some time?. When pruning a Fuyu correctly, in fact any fruit tree, unless it's really very, very overgrown, which this persimmon isn't, I note that you seem to be pruning for the look rather than the food. Persimmons fruit from new wood. You don't seem to be looking at bud grown at all, just lopping off branches for the look? As far as wind goes, there are many clever and attractive ways you can prevent too much wind from overwhelming your persimmon tree. Fuyu persimmon needs a prune for good fruiting but it must be done correctly. Perhaps you don't understand the Fuyu Persimmon very well? It's not an american persimmon. You mentioned your mulberry. Mulberry's are tough.
