“Hachiya” Persimmon Tree - Back Yard Orchard

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I snuck into my dad’s backyard Persimmon tree for a harvest. His tree is so loaded, I didn’t even make a dent! This video gives some background on persimmons, how to havest, store, check for ripeness, etc. So yummy, so doable, and a great fall fruit, ripe after most others in the Orchard have already come and gone.

    Like with figs and chicken too. Some eat the skin, some don't. The skin of a ripe persimmon is usually so thin and delicate, it's no biggies to eat it too!

Your video got me excited to go out and look at my tree right now, except that it’s dark out 😝 I have a Hachiya persimmon tree in my yard and was curious for a little more info since it’s full of fruits right now that are almost ripe! Really want to pull some before the birds and insects get them. Thanks again 😊

    Agreed that if you can time the astringency right, these are exceptional! I’m not sure what the black marks are, but I have found them to be totally superficial, and haven’t affected anything. Haven’t paid close enough attention to them to see what might be causing it. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Greg, Thanks for the kind words! We're in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley, about an hour east of Los Angeles. Depending on where you are in North SD County, you should experience a very temperate climate (I'm thinking of Julian, CA and their famous apple orchards and pies). What sorts of trees have you planted?

    Eating Hachiyas as you did in the video is actually the *second best* way to eat them. The best way in my opinion is by drying them into Hoshigaki! A delicacy!

  • @TheBusyGardener

    @TheBusyGardener

    3 жыл бұрын

    YUM! It looks like Hoshigaki is primarily made using Japanese persimmon like "Fuyu". These are the gooey astringent American persimmon which don't lend themselves as well to that method, unfortunately. Luckily, I've got Fuyu growing in my orchard!

  • @TheBusyGardener

    @TheBusyGardener

    Hi Brittni, hachiya persimmons do have seeds, but they're reported to have a very low germination rate (most likely won't produce a plant). It might be fun to try, but if you're wanting a viable tree, your best bet is probably to buy one. You'll have fruit YEARS earlier, too. Thanks for watching!

    They're both tasty. Hachiya is sweeter and has a stronger flavor, but is astringent until fully ripe. Fuyu can be eaten earlier in its ripeness and is usually still firm when ripe.

    Would you prune a persimmon differently then your other trees?

  • @TheBusyGardener

    @TheBusyGardener

    5 жыл бұрын

    Nope! This particular tree is my dad's Hachiya persimmon which I'm continuing to prune in a "central leader" style. My Fuyu persimmon in my orchard is being pruned in my standard "open center/vase shape" pruning style. Both will work. I'm limiting the height of my dad's tree with pruning, mainly removing problem wood, or limbs that I think are too long. They can break when they're too long and are loaded with fruit at the ends.

    The Busy Gardener thank you for the quick reply. I am getting some trees and trying to figure out what I can get away with. I am finding that you can go either way with pruning and the trees don’t really mind.

    Jesus Christ saves from sin. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Romans 10:9-10. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 1John 5: 10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. ....
