Pruning My Large Jade | Cleaning Up Some Bending Branches. There are some branches that starting to bend over the side of the pot. I want to cut them back so the stems continue to grow upright. Thanks for watching my videos!

I was given a plant a few years ago that was very similar to the one you are pruning. I have propagated lots and lots of new plants through cuttings, but also by pulling out a few of the small plants at the base. Yesterday I noticed that I was down to three main trunks in the pot and I finally was able to separate them so that each trunk is growing alone in its own pot. Somehow I thought this was what needed to be done. But now looking at yours and seeing that you did not attempt to remove the smaller plants from that pot, I’m wondering if I screwed it up. Is it better to have several plants growing in the same pot? Does it just look better, or do the plants grow better? Should I put them back together, or just start some of the new cuttings by placing several of them in a pot to grow together? Sorry for the barrage of questions, I just don’t know that much about this plant, but I’ve seen that it grows great where I live, (desert SW of the US) as every cutting has taken and I have more jade plants than I know what to do with! I have learned that I have to bring them inside during the hottest months of the summer, but otherwise they do great outside during the rest of the year. Thanks for these great videos! They are very helpful!

Is that one jade or is it several? If it is one, how in the world could we encourage branches coming from the root system like that? I've had my jade for about five years now and I only pinched leaves off the tops to encourage growth. It got to be pretty big and a bit unruly because I didn't know all you've taught here. Well, it fell over last week, so I had to do the damage repair. I've got quite a few broken branches now rooting after they dried off a bit. The main jade looks pretty sad but I remain very hopeful as there are leaves at the top of three remaining branches. Thank goodness it happened now and not in the dead of winter. Thank you for all the information.

Hello Vette. You'd be surprised at how much those leaves weigh and end up causing some branches to droop. What I've done in the past is remove some of those leaves to reduce weight. Give it time and hope it corrects. You could also do a small prune of the top to encourage branching as well.
