PLEASE NOTE: The open canopy pruning technique applies to stone fruits including cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, plumcots, pluots, apriums etc. This technique does NOT apply to fruit trees that like central leader such as apples and pears.

What is the reason for cutting off the branch facing down? I saw another orchard owner saying if your branches are more downward you won't get all those center suckers, and they produce better.

@@GypsyBrokenwings Respectfully, that channel is incorrect. The absolute best method for stone fruit, especially peaches, is the open vase technique. Branches that grow downward will get heavy with fruit, droop onto the ground, and more easily break and/or be susceptible to diseases than branches that are at a 45degree angle. Logically it makes little sense as well, since the sky is the limit with upwards facing branches, while obviously you don't want new growth growing to the ground. Stone fruits need lots of air circulation inside the canopy, this is the primary reason for the open center pruning technique. Regarding suckers, it has nothing to do with the branches. Suckers are usually dependent on variety of fruit, and especially the rootstock used below the graph. Hope this helps.

Hi Jag, thank you for your excellent pruning videos. I live in the UK in Zone 8 and the best time here for pruning stone fruits is May/June as we have a nasty fungus disease here called Silverleaf which is at its worst over our wet winters. I will be out pruning my cherry tree this morning as you described in your other video.

For apples, keep a central leader, do not use open canopy technique with apples. rest is the same.

sure wish you could see the tree i would like to prune. It's about 60 yrs old and has never been pruned. It is huge tall and the branches form a tent all the way to the ground from the weight of previous crops. A LOT OF BRANCHES! I dont even know where to begin. The crop is huge but small fruit

great info! from what i understand, some kinds of fruit trees are pruned into an open-goblet shape like you talked about. but, others are pruned to what's called a "central leader". i will need to do some research and figure out which one applies when.

Yea, Apples are central Leaders for example, however the open canopy applies to all stone fruit.

HI I have fruit tree in early stage of growing. it has only single stem and its 2 and half feet tall. At what point or height, i should cut the main stem to grow other branches. Thank You

My brown fig tree is growing crooked. It’s on a big slant. How can I get it to start growing straight up? It’s been like this for two years. It produced green figs but none were eatable.

Wait for three days with no rain? I live in a rain forest, if I did that I wouldn't prune until summer. Can I not use an anti-fungal pruning paste to seal the wound from the rain for a few days?

I like to paint my trims with latex paint. It's not conventional, but I found it works very well. For example, I once grew two peach trees from seed (which is very difficult), waited a year, and planted them in the yard, only to have the yard crew mow them over. I painted the stumps with bright blue latex paint and installed cages around them. Lo and behold, they popped back up over the course of the summer.
