In the words of Providence CEO Rod Hochman, "Nonprofit health care is a misnomer. It is tax-exempt health care. It still makes profits."

Providence is no longer a "Nonprofit" health care entity. It is now a "not for profit" organization...meaning they now CAN focus on profits. It was when they made that transition that things began to change and many RNs felt things were going in the wrong direction.

I'd like to hear about the Visiting Nurses that get contracted to work temporarily in hospitals when regular staff goes on strike. Are those very highly paid visiting nurses nothing more than scabs exploiting the situation and betraying their colleagues?

Each hospital has their own separate union contract. A strike did occur 11ish months ago but that was only for the Providence Portland location. These strikes are for expiring contracts with their own hospitals (St. Vincent, Newberg, Medford, Milwaukie, Willamette, Hood River). Hope this provides a better perspective!
