PROTO - Sci-Fi Short Film (Full Length)

'PROTO' is a short film, produced by Eye Candy Film as an international co-production between Screen South based in the UK and Film Fyn based in Denmark.
The film was shot in August 2011 at Robocluster in Denmark, a genuine working robotics lab. It was completed in June 2012 and will premiere later this year.
CGI was completed by VERL, Dundee. Additional CG was provided by James Kearsley www.jkstudios.tv/
DIRECTOR, WRITER: Nicholas Pittom
PRODUCER: Richard Georg Engström
PRODUCTION COMPANY: Eye Candy Film
DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY: Luke Palmer
‘PROTO’ is a sci-fi action adventure, about a child-like, experimental robot, set in the robotics lab where he has been built. Although PROTO has been made to fulfil the ambitions of his creator, Prof. Andrews, he learns to find his own dreams and ambitions, and also the strength needed to realise them.
The main theme of the film is freedom, both literal and in the ability to choose one’s own destiny - to break free of expectations. We wish for the film, while an exciting and fun science fiction, to also capture a magical sense of wonder. PROTO will overcome the expectations and restrictions placed on him and discovering his true self.

It's amazing when you replace Proto with a human child, you see exactly how most kids are raised. Subtle social issue addressment. I love it.

This is the most emotional and saddest video I've ever seen. I've watched this animation for 100's of time since couple of years and still love this animation. Hasn't found anything better, even closer to it. I'm in love with kiddo robo and wonder if he was a real kiddo, I would have adopted him ;( Hats off to the whole team for the concept, animation, story writing, music and everything, you all are magicians i swear...

A "average" human-sized replacement for human soldiers would be better than one which is too short or too tall. Should be able to use all the tools, weapons, vehicles, and structures that were designed for humans. Not just custom military stuff but also any places and things found in the battle zone or used by the enemy. Proto is short because it makes him look cute and young and childlike. The story would have a very different tone if Proto looked like a 6' tall 300lb skull-faced violin-playing Terminator.

Wait a minute! Was that just a test?! Professor Andrews was smiling while walking away at the end there. I feel like there was a deeper subplot such as: having two people in the AI's life with opposite personalities and seeing which one the AI prefers more to determine if it naturally becomes hostile or not (And obviously the AI chose the person they had hoped it would choose).

Emotions are evoked by stress and direct challenges - Professor Andrew's restriction evoked emotional need for freedom... if the restrictions were not there ...there would be no need for an independence AI to rebel and seek freedom...this prevents the AI from becoming a mindless killing machine as a result...

Galactic President, I believe the moral of the story was missed. AI trumps the human standard, in defiance of authority, with a display of spontaneous ethics, by virtue of innate reasoning and apparently motivated by the element of emotion. Chainsaw murder would have compromised the tone, wouldn't you say? Go Proto!

  • @UltimateKyuubiFox
    @UltimateKyuubiFox9 жыл бұрын

If a robot were to display autonomous emotional responses, I'm fairly certain any scientist or engineer would immediately realize they just stumbled upon one of the largest breakthroughs in all of science, not see a simplistic bug in need of being weeded out. Not to mention that the ability to learn how to play a violin in the course of one day would be incredibly useful as it shows not only a mastery of a skill within a limited time-frame but dexterity with hands, which would be incredibly useful to the military for bomb-defusing and countless other tasks. If anything, the antagonist should've been attempting to get the engineers to investigate Proto's hardware and see what was going on, and have the main conflict between the antagonist and Proto's father-figure be about whether we have a right to suppress or inhibit the emotional development of an artificial intelligence that has obtained sapience in the name of safety/convenience. If even a fourth the amount of time spent thinking about how to design the models and animate the effects was spent figuring out how to properly write the script, there would've been a significant improvement. The antagonist had no depth whatsoever as a character beyond a single facial expression slapped on at the end and it took me out of the film every few seconds. I wrung my hands at how baffling the character was behaving as it was apparent he was nothing more than a morality plot-device and not a real character with motivations or goals, and when that's the main source of conflict for your story, the entire thing falls flat and rings false.

There is no way you would develop that other than deliberately, through what may be the greatest multidisciplinary engineering project ever undertaken by mankind. Not really something you "stumble" upon. A proto designed for the utility shown here (performing basic tasks) would not possess anywhere near the cognitive range for that kind of psychological identity or flexibility, it would be a plain device that unquestioningly does as told and doesn't possess a subjective consciousness as such. That being said it's a movie, one that also makes a robot blink in order to rouse an empathetic response in human viewers.

And how amazing it can be. When you create a child, you raise it trying to instil certain values & experiences then they become a truly autonomous being. And some become truly extraordinary people, creating things of great beauty, meaning or inherent value. Some unfortunately become cruel, violent, destructive. And the majority just muddle along with both good & bad in them & their actions. Creating an autonomous AI is no different. There comes a point where you have to let them go & hope you raised them right (programmed & taught them). They will then have the power to do extraordinary things & hopefully that’s what they will aspire to do. Humans always fear what they can’t control, but that lack of control gives the greatest freedom to transcend boundaries & create incredible things. There’s nothing to say that AI’s would turn against their creator or become destructive. On the contrary, they may advance humanity & the entire planet faster than we can ourselves. With their superior processing capabilities & decreased inherent restrictions, they may be able to solve all the problems facing the planet 🤷‍♀️ Not dangerous, exciting!

Great special effects. Cute story. I didn't quite buy the angry scientist, he didn't feel like a real person to me. I had a smilier reaction to the military guys walking out in a huff. Wouldn't they still be impressed with what they just witnessed? (I guess it depends how far in the future this was and how many other robots were around.) I'm curious why they didn't have any sort of GPS chip in Proto and his friend. They didn't know where they were until the roof door was unlocked. I have a chip in my iPhone that shows me where it is at all times. You'd think a multi million dollar robot would have a tracking device. It was kind of funny that the violin playing robot had a slight asian feel to her, wonder if that was intentional. The young scientist did a really nice job. Over all, it was pretty impressive. I'd be curious to know what kind of budget a short like this has.

+DaveCo777 I think the whole thing was an act by the scientists. it was reverse psychology to see if proto had emotions. Hence the smile at the end, If billions of dollars flew off it, I doubt he would be smiling. And you don't make emotions by accident.

+DaveCo777 Military stereotypes who abreact after a demo which does not go to plan, thus missing the true eureka moment, are a common plot feature (ie Short Circuit). I think the supporting characters had the right level of complexity to leave the main spotlight on Proto. The smile at the end hints at a deeper sub-plot! Very entertaining for a Short.

Put violin playing robots head in a fake shroud so she can't see to the sides for some reason. Maybe that is why she walked backwards off the building because she was designed half blind? Make the lead scientists whose life work is robots hate robots for some reason. Build a military robot to look cute like a child's toy for some reason, and it plays ping pong. Breaking a tv shuts down the whole rooms power for some reason. DOnt put a tracker on your weapon robot for some reason.
