@re6983 No; that's a common failure-mode for people panicking and stunned to paralysis. It takes training/experience to break automatic reactions like that to a myriad of things. The intermix of hyper-rationality and irrationality in their ensuing argument is also how things really go.

He is one of the crew charged to saved humanity. You cannot send a dumba... to space, especially one charged with an important mission as that. As some people said "bad writing".

@@11111Neeraj My understanding is the wave is always there like a mountain. Because it is water (and not attached to the planet) it stays pointed at the gravity source, the black hole. If you are standing on the planet, you rotate into the wave and out of it again. like a conveyor belt taking you up to Mt Everest, over it and past it. This is actually what happens on Earth with the tides.

The waves are huge because the planet Gargantua is in orbit with such strong gravitaional pull. Imagine standing in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and being able to put your hand on the very bottom almost because the water level where you are standing is sucked up into a wave about the distance from where you are standing all the way to Japan BUT one of the waves is coming towards you fast. The planet they are on is shaped like an EGG because of the gravity pull of Gargantua. It's 1 and 1/3 of Earths gravity which means you throw a baseball in the air and it takes about 3 minutes for it to come back down to you instead of 3 seconds.

Do a re-release of the film in theaters globally for the 10th anniversary. We absolutely need it 🙏

Me too. but some things bug me. Like he had to remind them to get moving? Like before they hit any time dilation, they should have everything planned to make this as fast as possible. Like with slight planning and effort, they'd save literally years - it makes no sense for them to be so lackadaisical

My favorite part of this scene is that the climactic beat in the music when the wave is revealed comes even before the top of the wave can be seen just adding to the immensity of the situation and makes the wave seem that much larger.

Yeah thanks to hans zimmer... he s the best. The music is what makes a film better... the best example I could give is Tron. This film is considered wether good or bad for some... fortunately, Daft Punk was there, otherwise the film would have been almost a disaster.

Each "tick" in the background music is about 1.25 seconds apart (at least in the beginning). That's equivalent to about 21 and a half hours back on Earth per "tick". A minute has 48 "ticks", meaning over 42 and a half days just passed back on Earth.

They forgot to write any good reason as to why that one guy just stood there like an npc the whole time

I watched this in a dolby equipped theatre and I regret not watching it in an IMAX theatre. The sound: impeccable. The visuals: amazing. The acting, stellar.

ça marche très bien en 240p sur un écran de 15 pouces. Pourquoi mettez vous autant de technologie pour une scène qui dure 8 minutes, les 3/4 du film sont en huis clot. It works very well at 240p on a 15-inch screen. Why do you use so much technology for a scene that lasts 8 minutes, 3/4 of the film is behind closed doors.

Every click you hear is a full day. That makes this whole scene so much more intense!

This 8 minutes of video cost me 20 minutes of earth life (I watched it taking it back and back again)😅❤

Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway's best performance of any movie they've done in their lifetime happened to be the same movie, same scene, at the same time.

Still so chuffed I watched this in the cinema. Completely unaware what it was about etc. Came out with my mind blown and speechless, just quietly got in to my car and drove home thinking about it.

Great choice of background music with the tick-tock of a clock for a planet with every hour as seven years.

Saw this at Lowes Lincoln Square IMAX twice during the orignal run. The visuals, complex story telling that resolved and paid off, score, and the efx made me a Nolan fan. Interstellar remains my favorite film of his.

Every click sound you hear in the track of this scene represents a day passing on earth, Hans Zimmer is a mastermind!

People say this isn't possible but since the moons gravity controls the tides, its very possible for a black hole with higher gravity to control tides as well, with bigger waves considering the higher gravity

There are places on Earth that get fifty-foot tides. That's from the gravities of a middling size star twelve or so light-minutes away, and a moon somewhat closer. This world is orbiting up close and personal with a Black Hole, so I expect the tidal influence from that to be crazy.

masterful scene. the pulsing clicks rivet the suspense.

Fun fact I learned from others, Every "Drop" you hear at the background (Like a water droplet from a sink or something) is a whole day that passes back at earth.

The music makes this scene so much more powerful!

I really wish I could erase all memories of this film, I still remember watching this scene for the first time, my jaw was on the floor when I saw the oncoming wave

God I remember watching this scene for the first in theaters, my stomach dropping when it showed the giant tidal wave behind them. Hadnt felt genuine terror like that from a space movie since Alien. Cooper saying “Oh we are not prepared for this” is harrowing because to me it not only means the crew but also the species as a whole. They were just not ready. But they needed/had to be.

Still one of the best movies I ve ever seen

She speaks clearly. For him, I need closed captions. She has good training.

Looking back at films like this really puts things in perspective and shows how film quality for the most part has plummeted in recent years.

Agreed on both counts. I just watch Dune 1, another great score by Zimmer.

This was perhaps the cruelest and most needless part of the entire movie, but its inclusion leads us to have McConaughey's most memorable and sincere acting moment of his entire career - watching 20 years of messages from his children as they grow up in a matter of minutes.

I love the music in this scene.

When first time seeing this in theater this..this was purely magical.

Interstellar: The movie where the astronauts are hotheaded action heroes who forget how physics works just long enough to make room for the plot. Enjoyed it in the theater, but don't watch it too carefully.

Agree, I really do not understand the hype over this film. That guff about "Love transcending Space and Time", my immediate thought was, " .. sure, and the same can be said of hate and many other emotions" If you hate someone enough, no matter how far away they are, or how long they've been dead, the hate remains ! Still, infinitely better than Tenet. Much preferred Inception and Dark Knight, and even Batman Begins!

Greatest movie ever

What a insane scene. Gorgeous and awesome.

Man. This 8 minute sequence illustrates the brilliance of Nolan films. By using enough practical filming in the foreground, and saving the CGI for the background, it allows the audience to develop a better connection in my mind. The use of sound and music add to the emotional experience, they make you feel as though something ominous and scary is coming (which it is), and good scripts make the stakes higher, with the loss of Doyle. Theatres are clamoring for movies right now, they need to do a Nolan night, a few of his greats and perhaps Tenet to help right off the loss on that one.

One of the greatest scenes of all time

And for once, the name "Tidal wave" actually is accurate. These aren't waves caused by planetary displacement or motion - they're waves caused by literal *gravity tides* from the black hole's interaction with the planet's gravity. That's why the Ranger is pulled up the face of the wave - the black hole's gravity is overcoming the planet's gravity. Once the gravity wave passes, though.... it's a very long way back down. That's probably how their predecessor got wrecked... and because of the time dilation, it likely happened only local minutes before they showed up.

It is frightening to hear this clicking sound again and again once you know what the hell it is.

My one nit pick with this scene is that after re-watching it a few times it feels like Doyle could have made it back inside. He got to the Ranger first. Then for some reason he just sort of stood there and waited for Case and Brand to get in first. It felt like he had time to jump in first and then Case and Brand could have jumped in right behind him. I always felt like they could have come up with some better reason for Doyle to get delayed by about 30 seconds or something behind Case and Brand. Just a small nit pick.

Also the water's not deep enough to support a wave that high without it breaking. A wave needs 1.5 times its height to support it which is why waves break as they approach the shore or a reef.

I just want to understand how the stick man robot works. It can grip, i can change shapes all the time. Its wild.

In many scenes it's real too. Hardly used cgi for it. That's why it looks so great in this film. Just had a person in green tights controlling it.

Went to see this in the movies and you know what it looks awesome on the big screen

For me. This movie is a masterpiece. It changed the way I view the subject of love, time, and those that surround us. Some amazing life lessons were on this movie. Took me years and years after its release to realize and understand the purpose of this movie. One of the best movies, in my opinion, in cinematic history. Once again. Just my opinion. Was just hands down, a great movie.

I love the robot design

I watch all Chris Nolan movies in best iMax so I never regret. (You can never watch a movie for the first time again.) But I actually did think it unnecessary to watch Oppenheimer in iMax. This scene transports you into another planet showcasing original robot AI technology. Felt so immersed and full of anxiety during this scene.

Both the main characters express immediate signs of defeat...he's right they're not prepared for this.

This was the best scene from interstellar. How terrifying is that💯🖤

The other little thing that irked me with this part was that the in between "swells" that they were in the water would not be calm like that. It would have some sort of rip tide effect or major current/movement.
