Prosperity Preachers Debunked: Romans

Prosperity preachers distort the message of the Bible and cause people to fall into all manner of harmful opinions. Romans 8 teaches us a better way to view hardship and suffering and how to have TRUE victory in life.

One of the many verses that hit my heart was “How can I boast on what I have received?” As a physician, I have nothing to boast about. I was given a passion for how the body works, a need to help and be around people, a love of teaching, and the energy to perform. I was given parents who greatly valued a higher education, I was given an intellect to learn hard things, the perseverance to stick with a task, and common sense to put it all together. I have contributed nothing on my own. Thank you, Jesus.

Having come out of the faith movement I almost lost my faith, but Jesus in His mercy and grace brought me to a true Bible teaching church and healed my doubts and confusion. The Bible in context and the Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth. Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean NOT into your own understanding(feelings) and HE will guard your heart through Christ Jesus. Amen😊🕊

🌹Awesome testimony Kit Kat, i too am a survivor of that presumptuous (word of faith gospel?) movement. I was to the edge of throwing it all away, but it was the HS Himself who personally rescued me; quickening Job and 2 Cor. to my inner being - and thus saved me - even tho' i was later asked to leave a prominent Christian (X) commune, allegedly over an unspecified attitude - which i most certainly suffered under? But my faith also survived it and them - PRAISES BE LIFTED TO HIM!

@Tow Laro Well we don't just give a little, we give what he tells us to, which could be all that we have. It's not like gambling because there is no chance of losing. It may seem legalistic, because it is, it is a law that God himself put into place, we honor him with our obedience and we are blessed for it. “Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. “But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy. “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord , you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 30:15‭-‬20 NLT

I always struggle to know or accept that I am saved. I have a strong desire to please God and I have turned away from all my Idols and I daily walk always thinking of ways to please God and making sure I discern sin and turn away but I always question myself if I am saved. Grew up in a Christian house hold and was always doing the ceremonial acts of Christians until I believe I was saved two years ago, so thankful for that day... now I live in awe of GOD because I am learning his mercy on me. I grew up in a very strange doctrinal church that believes allot of weird things like, wearing jeans, wigs, makeup, earrings is a sin until I was saved, if I am. and started to read the Bible for myself and started to question allot of things, instead of answers I got called a Jehovah witness by my own mom multiple times because allot of things didn't make sense and I wouldn't believe them. allot of this makes no sense but Pray for me you guys, really want to believe I am saved with a 100% assurance.

When you were talking about people who are overly critical because they are overly critical of themselves, I think that is me. I look at myself and am not sure I am saved. Salvation is a Gift. I think too many people think that they already have it. Since it is a gift, why does everyone think they have received it? I get skeptical of so many people assuming that they are saved. Jesus said that very few people get in through the narrow gate. I think it is a dangerous place to assume we are on that road. There is too much "Don't worry... you are saved." I think we are supposed to work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

43:30 Is when it looks like he starts to talk about prosperity preachers. Here is a(Prosperity Busting Silver Bullet Passage) Bible passage he uses 1st Timothy 6:5-8, "These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, A SHOW OF GODLINESS IS JUST A WAY TO BECOME WEALTHY. Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. SO IF WE HAVE ENOUGH FOOD OR CLOTHING, LET US BE CONTENT." I also like how he mentioned how Prosperity preachers do sort of a "bait n switch" where they present what God promised to the NATION of Israel in the Old Testament as if it were a promise to an individual then or now. This is especially a FALSE idea considering 11 of the 12 disciples were brutally murdered, additionally so was Paul the Apostle, and many of the early church leaders. God didn't bless them with a private jet to fly away from their problems. LOL An additional verse I like to think upon when this topic comes up is when JESUS said, "Don't store up for yourself treasures on earth..... .....but treasures in heaven." Matthew 6:19-20

I have been a Christian for nearly 30 years. I have heard this scripture taught over and over again. I have taught it myself many times. For some reason tonight as I listened it dawned on me: "MORE THAN". Not we are conquerors. Not we are super conquerors. Not we conquer better than anything else similar. In fact I would suggest we are NOT conquerors when we are under the sword. But we are more than. Conquerors is not our vocabulary. Don't compare yourself to a phoenix rising from the ashes. We are sheep considered to be slain. Which is better than being a conqueror. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Being a conqueror is about self, which we can't do this on our own. Kill me, but you can't stop God loving me or raising me up to glory on the last day. All praise to Him. Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

The fruit of the spirit versus the acts of the flesh in chapter 5 should be a way to differentiate those that are christian apart from those that claim to be christian. As followers of Jesus we should lovingly call out those bad behaviors and set them straight. We wish for none to perish and all to find salvation thru Christ.

Man, I feel like Romans and 1st John, and the rest of the epistles were specifically written to debunk and pre-disprove heresies! ;) Romans got me out of Hebrew Roots, and now is Biblical evidence against WoF/prosperity G, which I’ve also left. During all these years, it’s the epistles I’ve read least... May I never let them go again.

My father was a preacher and he showed love to others when he prayed for them in the streets, while they were drunk or on drugs. God precedent me because I am a child of God and he loves me.

Idk, there have been times in my life where I was at my wit's end. Joel Osteen's preaching was so helpful in reminding me that the Lord is with me and in me. I was able to get thru hard times listening to his uplifting words he preached thru Jesus. Him and Joseph Prince. I know you didn't name them but I know ppl who bash them for being too "positive".

@Craig Laycox If he finds supposedly apostate preacher's messages more inspiring than Mike's teachings, What does that tell you about Mike Winger's spirituality. Apostate men grow dark and ugly, not bright and uplifting. Mike is closer to the darkness of that message.

@Craig Laycox Now you call an uplifting message a Problem. That is why the downtrodden and discouraged avoid anti - prosperity preacher's. Here is an illustration: I went out horseback riding with my girlfriend. At the stream we unpacked the Picnic lunch from her horse...got the blanket and bottle of wine from mine, and she set up luncheon while I led the horses to the stream. After a wonderful roasted chicken and Cabernet, she laid back on the blanket, and with the Sunlight flickering in her eyes through the shade tree leaves, I took off her cowgirl boots and started to Tickle her body. She wasn't complaining. I folded back her Western Shirt , poured some honey over her belly, and used my tongue to get it out of her Bellybutton. Then I rested her head on my jeans, and used the fuzzy wildflowers I picked nearby to rub on her nose and cheeks and lips : and Tickled her ears. She's never complained about getting some warm and fuzzies that day.

@Craig Laycox there isn't anything wrong with prosperity preaching as long as the msg aligns itself with the Gospel of Jesus. There are many downtrodden believers out there that need to hear the msg of hope and Grace. And there are downtrodden unbelievers out there that need to hear the msg of salvation and grace. You never know who's out there at their wit's end. They need compassion and love.

@Craig Laycox I think your meaning of prosperity might be different from what I'm talking about. Also, your using the scripture out of context. The reason why the rich man couldn't inherit the kingdom of God was because money was his Lord and he didn't want to let go of it. Jesus didn't mean because you have money you wouldn't inherit the kingdom. For the rich man, this was a Heart issue and the relationship he had with money not a money or prosperity issue that he needed to work out with the Lord.

@Craig Laycox also, calm down dude...if your claiming to be a Christian, relax, I believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior and I assume that you do too. I believe no one can go the Father except through Jesus and I'm assuming you do too. I believe it with all my heart. I mean, there's nothing wrong in having a dialogue about doctrine and the Bible but if you believe the same as I do, you should be rejoice that I'm your brother in Christ.

In vs 8:35-39, (what shall separate us...) Paul is talking about what will stop US from loving God and NOT what will prevent God from loving us. In context, we see that every item Paul mentions are things that discourage some people from loving God. It would be absurd to think that God would stop loving us because of our tribulations. Paul is saying that in view of God's great love for him, evidenced by everything God and Christ have done in v 31-34, etc., that there's nothing that will make Paul stop loving God. "Even though He slay me...." - that's Paul's faithfulness inspired by God's faithfulness. This is the fulfillment of Rom 1:17 "...from faith to faithfulness..."

Mike, the "past tense" things you referenced could also be indicative of the foreknowledge of Romans 8:29 itself. Compare with Romans 11:2. Foreknowledge in that verse referenced the prior knowledge (past tense) of Israel, and so one argument is that Romans 8:29 also references God's prior knowledge of the OT forerunners, and then that's how we can know that God works out all things for the good, which is observable in the lives of the OT saints. Thoughts?

hi mike, I've been listening to this Romans series as I read through Romans. I imagine you're pretty busy, and I so appreciate you youtubing (is that a word?) this. if you can, at about 34:00 minute mark where you talk about forgiveness which only God can give me, as He is my only judge, and so I don't need to judge/forgive myself, i'm confused about why I would need to forgive others, because that too would require judging? Or is that because God forgave me, so I am to not judge but simply forgive others? thanks, whether you are able to answer this or not : )

Scripture has the answer for your request. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Also, He Who has called you will perform it. This requires the believers to study the Word of God as approved by Him, seek His face and righteousness, be faithful to the Truth, endure to the end and be faithful even unto death. These are a few things that helps you know that as you cooperate with God, God will continue to do in you the work that He began. Just love Him by getting to know His ways and His thoughts. Rest in Christ Jesus. It is not works that save you. Works we do after the New Birth is done for God.

The Tithe is not giving. We pay Tithes, and give in special offerings. One can be as miserable as they want, and still pay their tithes. Paul mostly talks about offerings: yes...then your feelings are ok to go by.

Mike, I agree with almost all that you said, I’m not under prosperity teaching. In fact, God rescued me from a church like that. I think you missed the fact that prosperity in the eyes of God is not financial and it is His will for us to prosper. When we go through tribulation it may be the enemy trying to bring us down and there is a place for contending against and resisting the devil in such cases. The way you explained it invited people to just accept whatever life brings rather than contend for their situation. Look forward to comments.

Go to a Sunday service, and go out in the center aisle, & start taking a crap. If the ushers only throw you out, and the Pastor keeps going with his Sermon, than he isn't willing to deal with the hard issues. If he starts yelling at you, then join the Church.
