Pros & Cons of Living in Cambridge, MA from 20+ years of experience

Here's what it's actually like living in Cambridge Massachusetts. I am fortunate to both live and work in Cambridge, so here’s what I think are the pros and cons of living in Cambridge MA.

I came to attend Harvard in the mid 1980's, and I remember when I first arrived. The subway station in Harvard Square was just coming to completion. The big, underground station we know today.
I graduated from Harvard in 1990, and then I left Cambridge to live in other places, including Paris, France, New York City, Providence, Rhode Island, and additionally some time back home in the Detroit area in Michigan. I found my way back to Cambridge in '97, and I started working as a realtor here in 1999.
In the fall of 1999, I began working as a full-time agent in a leading real estate office in Harvard Square. Several years later, I met with a prospective seller outside of Inman Square. She decided to hire me.
The night before I was to list her home for sale, I called her up.
"Heidi, it’s Charles Cherney. I don’t want to list your home.”
“Why not?” asked Heidi.
“Because I want to buy it!”
And sure enough, my wife and I did!
The house - a renovated worker’s cottage - remains our family home to this day. We raised our daughter here.
So it's been 20 plus years now, that I've been back, and I really feel Cambridge is my home, and by extension, Somerville, where I also work. Which is located at the end of my street, outside of Inman Square.
It really is wonderful to have had such a long relationship with Cambridge, and by extension with Harvard. There are days when I walk through Harvard Yard and in this timeless place, I feel our flood tide of memories of being a student, living in the yard, and taking classes.
Cambridge is one of those timeless places where many things still feel the same.
Over the time I've lived here, I've really come to know it intimately. I think it makes me an even better real estate agent, as I can give my clients a deeper insight into the area. I hope you enjoy hearing the things I love about Cambridge as well as the potential cons of living here.
I love living here. I think for someone looking to move here, working with someone who knows the area, loves it, appreciates it, and has experienced it deeply - it's an advantage.
I'm here for you. Take care. Charles.

I have visited Cambridge on many occasions and love the city. I would move there in a heartbeat, but while I have a good income, there’s no way I can afford the real estate market there. People who live there should feel blessed.

I was born in and spent most of my youth in Cambridge. Harvard Yard was my playground and the Christmas Revels at Sanders Theatre was a treat at holiday time. Great place to live and grow up to.

I’m from Napa, California, and I just moved to Cambridgeport! I found a room to rent for $820, and I’m attending Boston University on a scholarship. I hoped to find housing in Brookline, but I couldn’t find anything in time or reasonably priced until I found something in Cambridgeport. It was this, Southie, or Dorchester… 😅 I feel like I made the best choice!

Thank you for this. I love Cambridge. I have visited 4 times already this year from Maryland. I would love to move there, but the rent prices are insane. I’ll keep looking.

It"s very nice and eclectic, but Real estate and renting are extremely expensive! I live in Medford which is North West of Cambridge. Even here, real estate is getting very expensive. I'm glad I bought a house in Medford when it was affordable!!

I love that neighborhood. I grew up just outside Central SQ. I used to work on Mt Auburn street right across from the cemetery in the white office building. Sometimes I would walk from work to Harvard Square to catch the red line. You're right it was a beautiful walk. I live in Manchester by the Sea now but Cambridge will always be my true home.

If I saw this video 10 years ago, I would agree with it all. What a great place this was to live in for so many years. But as you slightly touched upon, it is too crowded now. Its been overdeveloped. Its now just an extension of Boston and has lost most of it s wonderful neighborhood family feel. Sad. =(

👌↗Indeed; it's a nice and decent walk from Cambridge to Boston for some exercise and or to enjoy the scenery and or for different reasons persons choose to walk or take the public transportation or ride by bike or car ↗ I've walked to Cambridge from Boston enjoying the walk and or the scenery along the way while also in Cambridge are some nice places to eat some good 😋 tasty foods and or to do some shopping of different kinds; I love the Harvard Square area in Cambridge they have good fast foods restaurants, clothing and shoe stores and some neat and awesome stores persons can shop at for their home goods.😘

The winters do vary. This past winter, I think it only snowed a handful of times, and did we even have a snowstorm? Can’t remember. All that said, as some Scandinavians, “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.” Which essentially means, that with the right kinds of clothes and boots, you’ll be fine.

Thanks Charles. You may be preaching to a believer here, but what would you say are the advantages of Cambridge over Boston? If I need to get out to Waltham frequently, what better area than Porter Square with its commuter rail line is there? Danke.

  • @CharlesCherney

Cambridge is smaller and has more greenery than Boston. And generally speaking it is easier to park in Cambridge. Not sure there is an easy commute to Waltham from Cambridge.
