Pros and Cons of growing Phalaenopsis Orchids in a home

Today we talk a bit more on the care and attention that Phalaenopsis orchids require.

    IF YOU HAVE A STORE-BOUGHT ORCHID . . . Mine always die but bloody-minded determination means I kept watering it and SURPRISE . . . This one sprouted a flower-spike so it was high time I learned how to keep it happy; this channel provides a great crash-course if you know nothing about Orchids. Thank-you.

    Danny, I just want to encourage you to pursue your idea to produce a video series on "The Pros and Cons of Growing 'X' Orchid." I just think that would be so helpful to all of us! We all have different conditions in our growing environments, and, as you said in this video, what may be a "pro" for someone may be a "con" for someone else. Having that information put forth in individual videos would be really helpful to those of us trying to decide whether to add a specific orchid to our collection. And if you could include videos on orchids that are perhaps a bit less common, that would be great. There's is so much information for phals, oncidiums, dendrobiums, etc., but less information available for, for example, Beallaras, or maybe the Latouria Dendrobiums. I know you have videos on them already, but the internet in general is lacking in good, reliable information. Go for it! And thank you!

    I really love phals, i have this addiction on hanging pendant orchids.. and your cons of leaning large pendant leaves and blooms are so appealing to me.. i always hang them up on wide planks of wood groups.. and when they blooms.. a curtain of flowers.. yey.. also.. really love those large pendant leaves... theyre breathtaking.

    Love the series idea! I can't wait for the ones on oncidiums and cattleyas, I know they're on the way! I love phals and now with all the minis on the market, I am happy to find room for them. I like to group two phals (medium and mini) together in a pot so I feel like I'm getting more out of the space than just one bulky plant. I wouldn't do it with an expensive one or a species but they are lovely when in bloom together. Like an arrangement without going through the trouble or cost!

    Hi Danny. Call it wierd, but I kinda love orchids and especially phals more for the growth of the roots and leaves than the bloom -maybe I’m still too green in this hobby. It’s like the “Adams Family” when Gomez cuts the rose off just for the stems 🤪. I have a little Vanda (?) that’s all of 5cm wide and is breaking out a new leaf in its crown -that’s excitement !!! Can hardly wait til it covers my kitchen ( 1 meter) window, maybe by this time next year ? Anyway love your new series and anxiously waiting for next installment. Which window for which plant living where ??? Danny, I seem to have a correlation with phals bought when planted in moss, then converting to semi hydro, they often go into shock -roots die off, than when I buy in bark and converting into semi hydro. Ones in bark the plant stops for a month and continues growing, whereas the phals that were in moss takes three or four months and losses many if not all the roots and new growth will begin after four or five months. Also because much of the roots are gone the orchid progress much more slowly. Any thoughts or experience in this ?

    Hey Dani, I managed to stop by mistake a stem rot by spraying the top of the crown with hidrogen peroxide. After this, in a few months plant grew a sibling. The mother plant did not saved herself, dud not grew anymore, but kept her bottom leafs green for almost one year after this. Gave enough time for the sibling to grew and develop its own roots.

    Actually you made it worst cause hydrogen peroxide after some minutes becomes water so if you spread the top of the crown, you water the top of the crown and that helped stem rot and orchid tried to make a sibling it's self.

    I do not know other orchids, I only have phals, so I am not aware how it is with the others, but it is definitely a pro that they don't have pollens, so they don't trigger allergy. Once one of my flatmate wanted me to give them away when I moved in and she found out about them. I told her that she has no reason to worry, and asked her to let me know if she could notice any of her symptoms due to the phals. She never got back to me about it. (I kept them only in my room, about 20 of them.)

    The best preventative you can do for phals or any orchid for that matter is to spend time with them! If you do you can prevent or catch many issues before they become bad. For example, if you're inspecting your favorite phal and you see a red spider mite, you can squash it before it has a chance to multiply! The more time you spend without it becoming an unhealthy obsession the better! Also, don't water your phal from the top it's better to dunk them in a bucket of water!

    I love Phals! I remember you have a Kaoda Twinkle 'Chocolate Drop', where did you get it ? I can't seem to find it here in Germany. And another question, would you recommend to repot Miltoniopsis when they are in bloom or you'd rather wait till it ends? I recently bought a Nelly Isler and a Herr Alexander, but theirs media doesn't look good to me. Since it's still quite cool here they might get a chance to have a head start with the root system. I'm kinda worried, if I wait, the temp might get too warm for them to properly establish in the new media.

    While there is a big color and pattern variability in modern phalaenopsis complex hybrids, there isn't a lot of diversity. The wast majority of them are about 60-80% Phalaenopsis amabilis and other species similar to it, although the pink-purple colors likely come from Phal. violacea. Yes, they are various and interesting, but essentially they all are the same type of phalaenopsis, while there are a lot of different types within the genus. Here's and idea, but I don't know weather you're interested in something like this - Orchid history series, where you could talk about the cultivation of various orchids, the origin and parentage of various popular orchid hybrids, their place in society and availability to the common person.

    MissOrchidGirl , please help me with this issue! I always repot an orchid in fresh media after I purchase it, because I wanna get rid of possible pests, but also because in stores are not very properly cared and they have a lot of dried roots. The problem is that for weeks I look at the roots inside the pot and they seem very fine, green and plump, but at the surface the root is mushy and it starts to rot, so I have to cut a root which is 90% fine (in the media) because the part which is at the surface is dead.

    Reblooming is the usual problem with endemic or pure breed orchids but solved in some cross breeds. Environmental needs must be met. Low morning sunlight with screen nets, no watering on leaves, once every 2 weeks application of fungicide if needed. Very weak daily fertilizing every other day with blooming(mwf) and growing(t-th-s) fertilizers (10-30-20 & 30-10-10)- that is if you want a "for show" orchids.

  • @adamfromgardenofeden

    @adamfromgardenofeden

    Joshy Likey my orchid has many really long aerial roots. They stop growing when it blooms so they can focus on blooms. When the blooms finish, the aerial roots continue growing. If yours is blooming, it is ok. if not, it may need more humidity. Humidity = strong fat growing aerial roots!
