Orchid transplant shock (after repotting) - What is it & how to minimize it

Today we talk about repotting orchids and how to minimize setting back, staling and root and plant shock afterwards!
▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
Orchids will respond bad to a repot depending how how much the root system is damaged in the process. If the roots are not affected, even orchids such as Cattleyas can successfully recover after repotting!
Repotting before or as the new roots start to grow ensures that, even if the old root system will be damaged, the amount of time until the new roots will hydrate the orchid will be minimal. In semi hydroponics this is not important and repotting can be done at any time, such as I do here • How to repot Orchids i...
Before repotting it is a great idea to soak or wet the roots of any orchid, this will make them more flexible and less prone to snap.
Take your time to remove the old medium from the root system, even if it takes one hour the result is worth it. Orchids are slow growers and recovery can take several years even. How to remove sphagnum moss • How to remove sphagnum...
If you don't know what you are doing just yet, go for a similar potting medium, or something you worked with before.
Orchid roots adapt to whatever they grow into, changing the type of medium too much can result in the old root system being lost. So work with watering, or airiness until the orchid grows new roots, more adapted to the new medium.
Re-repotting is ok too, as it can be done without damaging roots. If orchids have too many roots they can all be kept and removed after a month or two, when they become more obvious if they are in good health.
In semi hydroponics many of these worries don;t exist, as roots theoretically never even get touched, let alone damaged, when repotting.

My husband bought me an orchid yesterday that was potted in what looked like regular potting mix. It was very wet and I could see through the plastic that the roots were dying. I careful removed it and picked all the dirt off it and washed it under the sink. I clipped a few of the dead roots but didn't want to go too crazy. I used orchid soil I got at the hardware store. It's like mulch. I hope I did a good job and nothing happens to it. It looks healthy!

I am very glad you have made so many videos about so many aspects of keeping orchids. I have learned pretty much everything I know from you and your channel is my first port of call when I get a new type. I bought what I think is a no ID Oncidium, from the spike that had lost all its flowers, and a named Zygopetalum Sensation today from the marked down area of a garden centre. Both were very dry and the pseudobulbs were wrinkled but the foliage was green and not floppy so at £1.50 each I took a chance. I’ve given them a good soak and the bulbs look like they are starting to swell. The Zygopetalum had some nasty black areas at the tip of several leaves so, using your advice, I trimmed them to healthy tissue and coated the cut edge with cinnamon. Without your videos I would have walked straight past them. Thank you very, very much.

To film the progression over a long term might be cool for your viewers to see the hands on visual aspect! i learned a lot of new things by watching your video today , and thank you so much for your effort i really appreciate it! xoxoL.

I repotted a phal that I got on sale at a big box store's garden center after it was done blooming. It was in super packed moss that took forever to remove. I had trouble getting moss at the time, so I used Repotme bark mix. I live in a low desert climate - very dry and low humidity. Bark does not work in my setting. The phal is growing new leaves but is clearly dehydrated - even though I water it by a 10 min soak in a clean cup. Thanks to your tips, I will be repotting it in moss with a bit of bark blend. I have learned so so so much from you! Thanks, Dani!

Hi Danny! I'm new to Phal Orchids and I've been watching a lot of your videos, which are super helpful, thank you for sharing such useful tips! :) I have recently repotted several of my Phals from bark to bark and, while some of them are doing really well and creating new leaves, others seem to be declining. I notices white spots on the bark inside the pot and I'm slightly concerned about it. It is not hard water residues (I filter my water and it's not present on the surface), not mould (fortunately). But it has sort of a mushroomy smell, so could it be a kind of fungus? Maybe I've overwatered after repotting? What would you suggest? Thank you!

My orchid bloomed once, changed the medium, trimmed like i was suppose to 3 nodes, put holes all over a plastic pot for air, the leaves are green, just February 2020 it started to get some kind of branch that looked like it was starting to get blooms on it, but they dried up and died, was fertilizing it, weekly , so i cut the middle stem down to another node, now the main stem is getting yellow.....keep it in a western facing window no other place to put it so i have a grow light started putting it in front of it (once), when the water drains out of the pot i then put it in a plate with stones but let the water drain out of the pot so it does not sit directly in the water. I keep it in the window in front of the kitchen curtains at night so hopefully in Pensacola Florida it was no to cold but pull it back during the day, not far, Now that it is getting warmer I'll keep it there. Hopefully it starts to get flowers......2-29-20

My friend has over 20 phalaenopsis orchids mostly in a south facing window with no filter from the sun and the media is so hard and dry I wonder how they live never mind bloom, but 4 of them are blooming now. I watch all these orchid videos and baby my orchids, and they die! Also, hers has a lot of aerial roots, and mine has none. What am I doing wrong

My orchids had some kind of bugs on the roots so I had to spray with hydrogen peroxide and repot . All the beautiful flowers started to fall off on my orchids at the same rate basically. And the roots started shriveling up .. i don't know what I'm doing wrong 😭 I've had this issues in the past where I repot and the roots shrivel up and flowers just all fall off..

I have a no ID orchid that looks a lot like an Oncostele Wildcat 'Rainbow'. When I got it 3 months ago, absolutely every root was black and rotted through. It still has no roots at all (literally, not even a piece of a root), but it's pushing 5 new growths from a total of 4 pseudobulbs. I've noticed that 2 of the 5 new growths have completely stalled, 2 have dramatically slowed, and one is growing very fast. Is this a pretty normal growth pattern? Will the stalled growths resume growth at some point?

By going back to cut away the dead roots, do you mean you repot again? Or just go in to pull away the dead roots you can reach? @MissOrchidGirl

She has talked about this before: Lift the orchid out gently, trim off the dead roots, and put it back in the pot again :)

I have a gifted phalaenopsis orchid and it has a Keiki at the top of the flower stem, so I need to remove and replant but worried that it only has aerial roots, should it be just put down laying on top of the earth and let the aerial roots stay out...also the mother plant is developing a new leaf and it's in a very large pot is leaving the mother in it's big pot or should I downsize it... I really could use some advise...

Help! I transplanted one orchid I’ve had for over 3 years. It was super compacted with the roots all the way around the pot (inside). When I took it out all the roots were beautiful and healthy but the mix really had to be changed, it didn’t smell very well. So I cleaned it and all but the roots now are all spread and not compacted so it didn’t fit in the pot I had selected. I put in as much mix as I could but it was not much. Can I buy another pot and repot it again? It just does not have much mix right now. I don’t want her to suffer and go into a super bad stress status. Help!

I would repot it, the best rule of thumb is whatever size your pot is, go an inch above it, or for example to day I had to repot two phalaenopsis hybrids, they are pretty big and were in a 12cm pot, they weren't compacted, but had a lot of roots and i knew I needed to report anyway because it was from a shop and they are normally potted with that awful spoil pot thing in the middle, i put them into a 15cn pot and they have enough room to grow, but not so big, otherwise the media won't dry out in enough time and the roots could rot. Phals don't mind being a bit compacted but it sounds like yours is too small, I would go up an inch or 2-3cm if that helps. Make sure you check all the roots by gently squeezing them, also check the entire length of the root , it could look green and amazing lower down but higher up it could be black, the root would rot later and spoil the media. Be gentle and untangle the roots, they might get a little stress but they are really hardy and should be fine, just make sure the roots are wet.

I have a new orchid and it's flowering. Do I need to change my potting medium? It appears root bound and the pot is too small. I'm really nervous.

I have just bought a phal orchid, pot bound but in bloom also. It seems you have to wait for the blooms to die off and then repot it after flowering.

Your videos are great but I am in need of HELP. I have 5 phals and they've been doing well for a few years, lots of blooms. I decided to repot them all, as I had never done so and bought them without repotting. So I repotted, and that was almost 2 months ago and their leaves are all droopy and soft. I cut back any stems and flowers. I feel that when repotting I did it too loose - so when I water from the top, the water basically pours out the bottom. They all have nice looking air roots. I am not sure what else to do and I regret touching them in the first place :(

@@yuniwatichandradinata3754 my phal is doing fine.. the reason why I repotted it was because the roots were beginning to rot. New roots are slowly beginning to grow. I'm considering adding a top layer of moss though - I feel like it needs more moisture.
