Thank you for your videos. They are excellent! Wow!! Your state is going a different direction from California. Beginning June 1, 2023, we will be required to include the engine compartment, various undercarriage components, three backing maneuvers (examiners discretion) and no access to the evaluation form for the public at anytime!

Wow, All These Changes Just to Drive a Bus, I know some states they barely pay $14 $15 an hour for a bus driver and Today it's not worth it,...hope this doesn't chase people away 🤣

Hi Tony, The changes are intended to make the process easier. I think for the most part, it will, but like everything, people don't like change, so it's hard to say how this could be received. I think the proposed pre-trip changes, will be much easier. I think the maneuverability proposed changes, will be a fairly easy transition for School Bus Drivers, but may be more challenging for Class A Semi drivers. We shall see if all of this actually transpires. The driver shortage alone, may be the necessary push to increase wages.

As a fellow trainer, I love watching your videos! My understanding is that New Hampshire and another state (Maybe Maryland?) are already practicing this new system for the pre-trip. I am unsure about the cone course however. Are you able to do a video demonstrating the pre-trip inspection process? Thanks!

It’s my understanding there are five, states, testing out this new system . I believe Florida is an additional state participating. I do not recall the other two. I will have to find out more about the, proposed pre-trip, before attempting a demonstration, but when I do, I absolutely will.

I hope the new pretrip process will be adopted! I’m not sure about the new maneuver…you need a lot of space to set it up. This could be very challenging for districts who don’t have the amount of space necessary to enable their new student drivers an opportunity to practice the proposed skill changes .

Unfortunately, in New York State, DMV doesn't send this info to our fleets. So as a result, we train for everything (engine compartment included) until they eliminate it altogether. I wish they could be more specific (they just tell us to look at the book, which isn't very helpful.) But we will push forward. Thank you for your videos.

Too be honest I feel like CDL requirements are always changing to make the tests more easier just to get more school bus drivers. Here in NYS you can be 18 years old getting a CDL.

  • @SchoolBusSass

You can get your CDL in Ohio at the age of 18 as well. I think the pretrip is in need of being revamped, but also feel standards shouldn’t be compromised.

ive never drove a bus before i've drove everything else i've even gone 215 mph in a drag racing car , i just started training in new york state, i use to say when i bus went buy with the kids what a easy job that is just get in and drive , wow i was way wrong this kind of driving job is very technical, today was my first day on the road i finished the all the skills test and some class room its been 9 days of training i've have been trying to do the pre trip inside the bus there is a lt t remember the company i work for is making all the trainees over qualified for the DMV road test. they just signed me up i just found out today that they signed me up for the road toast on jan 17th so that's only 8 more days of training thats a total of 17 days of training i told them that's not enough, what do you think ????????????

  • @SchoolBusSass

Three weeks is average training time, so, not a big variance. If you feel you’re not ready, perhaps you could ask your trainer to push the test out a bit. In many states, what your trainers are teaching is what’s required by the state. There are proposed changes being considered, which would streamline the pretrip process as well as the skills portion of the CDL exam. Most people who begin training to become a school bus driver, are amazed at what’s involved in becoming a school bus driver. Hopefully, once you obtain you CDL, they will give you continued instruction with children aboard. That’s when the real fun begins. Best wishes for a successful test outcome. I will be cheering for you from Ohio. Enjoy the journey. 😊

@@SchoolBusSass I was just hired at a school district in Colorado where we go through 6 weeks of full time training as a bus driver. I am so glad we have that amount of time to feel comfortable about learning all the pre/post trip inspections, skills and road tests. Not to mention all the other things like student mgmt , special ed training, first aid/cpr and other training. It's a ton of info and my brain is FULL and it's only been 1 week! Our district has implemented the new four skill system you demonstrate here. I ran it the first time yesterday and struggled a bit with the reverse offset part. I've since watched your great video on parallel parking. It looks like the same strategy would work for this new offset tracking? I'm testing on a IC 40' conventional bus. Also, no changes for us, so far, regarding the newer pre-trip format.... we still have to check the engine, but I think that's something that shouldn't be done away with. Thank you so much for all you do, Therese, in helping everyone....not just drivers in your own district....become better, safer drivers!
