My old football coach used to say “Hit the snot out of them, help them back up and then do it again.” Playing your heart out doesn’t mean you have to lose respect for your opponent. Little things like helping a guy up off the turf isn’t soft. And if you love and respect the game there’s no reason you shouldn’t acknowledge a good play even if you were on the wrong end of it. Sure it’s a dogfight and they’re your enemy for 4 quarters... but when it’s over, they’re your peers again.

The type of “manners” in football is really just being respectful to people. That’s what football is about. Sure, when the game is going on it’s fine to be ruthless but when the the whistle blows that’s when you congratulate the other player if they made a play, help them up.

I always love the good sportsmanship when I watch a game. Opposing players helping up the other guy. When a player gets hurt badly, and you see the staff on the field putting the guy in the stretcher, and you see the opponents nearby kneeling or hanging around, hoping the guy is ok, it actually warms my heart. Not that I want guys to get hurt.

I was right LB in HS and anytime I hit another player I always helped them up and I always got the same treatment backed when o was down. My coach got mad because I did I told him " if I don't show respect for the team we're playing then I don't have respect for the game itself". After I said that's to him it changed his outlook on the sport and proceeded to tell the rest of the team to keep respect in our minds and never disrespect the teams we have faced or going to face.

I'm late on this video, but I wanted to say I know exactly what you mean. My son played rugby in high school. I had never played, so I didn't know much about it. His coach always referred to it as a "gentlemen's sport", which surprised me a bit, considering the way they went at each other on the pitch. Then I saw that a common tradition was after a game full of beating each other senseless, both teams would often get together for hot dogs on the grill or otherwise just hanging out together for a few before leaving. It was something special.

When I was a player, my only concern was getting too competitive and never being a good sport. I remember after a good tackle I made, the qb I tackled said “good tackle” and after I got up I held my hand out to help him up and he and I shared a hug. I didn’t know him like at all but we beat them by like 40 points but it was such a good moment for me and hopefully for him.

Luck has the respect of nearly every defensive player because he not only enjoys the physical aspect of the game, but according to several NFL defenders, he NEVER whines to the refs about late hits or hits to the head or anything like that. Almost every QB in the game constantly whines. Back in the 1960's, QB's were not the protected commodities they are today. They would run the ball like a running back, looking to hit people. Luck is old school. This is why you will see defensive linemen give him a hand when he's on the ground. Another thing.....when Luck screws up and throws a pick, he can hit. He doesn't run off the field. He takes responsibility for the mistake and tries to get the ball back. Ask Sharise Wright when Stanford played USC back in the day. Luck gave Wright one of the most vicious hits I have ever seen.

Unwritten etiquette is big in rugby. Big hits; big handshakes; no big mouths. But I have to say NFL wouldn't be what it is without the bombastic behavior and showmanship which I enjoy.

There is one major etiquette in football that has always been there. You want to hit as hard as you can but never injure the other player. When that basic rule is broken that player gets singled out.
