I have watched thousands of hours of Dog training videos and I have studied and read countless hours about the e collar and dog training nothing compares to this and what I learned in 30 minutes thank you so much for this Larry. agreed 100% Larry explains everything SO well and does things others don't such as start off teaching the dog that an e-collar is a good thing. I just got my e-collar....have been watching all kinds of how-to videos...none come close to this and his 'first session' video...I'm now excited to get started.

Your comment is the only reason I am going to watch this one. I've now watched about a dozen videos and have no real understanding of how to safely and effectively use an e-collar. I am not the brightest but this should not be so difficult to comprehend.

@@jenmdawg we just started with a trainer today. They use an ecollar for training. I am already questioning it after seeing this video. But we are $1700 in to this so I’m hoping to somehow integrate the two. They do not use food based rewards but I’m going to give this method a go. The ecollar is very confusing for me as well.

I can’t thank you enough for these videos, and this one in particular. I’m a trainer and I’m unfamiliar with ecollar work, but wanted to learn how to condition a dog to the tool properly for a client who wants to use one. I wouldn’t use it without a better understanding, even though they’ve already had the dog on the ecollar prior to hiring me(I’ve corrected the behaviors they needed corrected using counter conditioning/desensitization, they want to continue to use the ecollar for off leash recall), it seemed to me the ecollar was being used improperly(punishment), and I got them to agree not to use it until I could get a better understanding of how to use it correctly. This video was huge for me! I’m not sure if I’ll use ecollars as a regular thing, but knowing how to use them properly takes the a huge weight off my shoulders!

I found this very helpful compared to many other videos I’ve watched. Great specifics, love the examples, clarity, and understanding of proper use. Will be watching more of your videos and sharing with others. Much appreciated!

I am so thankful for this video! I wish there was a way to require everyone who has an e collar watch this video. Unfortunately, everyone I know uses it only for corrections. I hate that so much! I never thought I’d use one. But, after many months of trying to teach my dog to listen off leash and stay in the yard, he was doing great, even with distractions, then one day he decided not to listen when there was an animal rustling in the bushes. He took off! After that, he realized there was nothing I could do to stop him, and he wouldn’t listen off leash. I was devastated! I want him to have freedom to be a dog, but I didn’t think that was possible with his strong prey drive. Your videos have given me hope. I bought an e collar and started training after watching your videos. Training started off pretty rough. I had a very hard time finding his working level. I almost gave up, but I trusted you when you said even fearful dogs will come around. Your advice about tapping stim then reward seemed to make a big difference! I’m starting to see some good results. I wish there was a trainer in my area that followed all of your advice. I could use some help letting me know if I’m doing anything wrong. This is a great refresher course for me. I used an e collar on the dog pictured here. He was so well behaved. That was almost twenty years ago. We now have an American Bulldog blend that I need to use the E Collar for training. However I was afraid to jump in to training without some kind of refresher. Thank you for making this video on a hot day. Although I am still not ready to jump into training. I know I would have failed at training without this video. Thanks again for your time, tips, and valuable information.

This is hilarious and so beneficial to me. I have a rescue that is dog reactive and unable to focus when a dog is there. I purchased a pager only system and am hoping this can enhance his learning with me so he can gain confidence. Also, thanks for the reinforcement that ecollar isn't used to teach.

Excellent video, Thank you so much for all the time you spend making these videos, they are so helpful to all of us! You have given me more information than I have gotten from the trainer we used when our dog spent six weeks in a board and train facility. I greatly appreciate the information.

So glad you explain that the dogs need to know the commands. I’ve trained dogs in group settings. I train my rotties and then introduce the ecollar. This is my first time on this collar because I have a new guy almost a year old and my other collar was 15 yrs old lol. We have been training all along and I’ve just introduced the e-collar. Tap tap is all I’ve had to use so far. His response to the tap is the same as he would respond without it. I’m adding even more distractions because I live on a busy lake and want him to have his freedom but to be outside with me but stay on my property regardless of different people and dogs walking by. Kids have been his weakness. He loves them. One lane dirt roads and people walk around. Many do not leash their dogs. They don’t listen and I don’t want him to “not” listen or it’s chaos. It’s been hard for him but he LOVES to work. He can’t wait to please. I alway put so much into my male rotties because they’re the first to get blamed. We’re still working on introduction. He isn’t off leash until I’m positive his recall is 100% for his sake and safety

I think you could make a killing just doing e-collar videos. Not much or any trainers want to associate themselves with it. I love your teachings it makes so much sense. All the mistakes you are saying others have made I also made myself. But it was your video's I studied and really mastered the art of e-collar to the point I am now telling my other family and friends to let me help fix your dog's bad habits. You are a legend my friend!

This is great. I have done so much research to find a good video on introducing my dog to an e collar with no luck. But this one is exactly what I've been looking for.. people underestimate how important it is for the dog owner/trainer to be well educated in whatever they're using.

It would be MIND BLOWING if you showed Luca do a default response of a recall with no command/ no sound box or vibration on the collar in DRIVE on level 2 or 3. That sounds incredible. You should have a TV show. Thats the real dog whisperer. Keep up the great content. You are a great trainer

Malamutes are legends of all legends. They are primal though. Glad you found a way. Malamutes are not bred for domestic life but their bond and love for humans is the strongest of any animal.

A trainer I am working with had me review this video...she was using it a a prep for some work we are going to do... and now I know why...excellent video. Also D_O_G was a cute puppy and added a nice touch to the video...the absolute right approach to using an e collar.

You did a heck of a good job with this vid. I learned alot. We have 2 baby goldendoodle's that when the time is right and they know what there commands mean will be introducing them to the e collar in a very gentle way like you taught. Thank you.

Great video Larry thanks again. I notice the emphasis on Sophia not moving the collar in her hand once you find the working level. Is this something you will check often when conditioning a dog? Could one days working level be different than the next simply because its not in the exact spot each time you put it on? Of course I would attempt to get that same spot but its something I'm concerned about with my golden who's got decently thick neck fur.Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to give us an idea of what to expect with e-collar training. Very different approach from 30 years ago working with the police force. I felt so sad for those broken dogs at the time and also now.

We are in a situation wit 2 huge chocolate lab/blue heeler mix dogs. They are brutally prey driven. But in the home at night these two are sweethearts. I am so glad that this e collar is used as a 'treat' a positive thing. Taking them out of their paddock at night is a nightmare. We are adding an anteroom where we can get leashes, prong collars or e collar. We've owned this one e collar for a few years. Have not been able to learn how to use it so we haven't used it and I am so very glad for your video. We are training them for Urban Mushing. Best thing we could do to get them exercised and in control.

Larry, we have 2 Mali’s, one 2 yr old F and one 6 mth old M. F was trained on the GarminSport Pro w a continuous button, a momentary button, a vibe and a tone button. Which button would correspond to the one you are using? My continuous doesn’t have sound. The tone button would have to be manually done continuously to resemble your technique.

This is the BEST easy to understand e-collar video out there! I totally agree with everything Larry is saying. If you haven’t got his book on e-collar training - it’s a must! 👍🏽🐾

Question: when moving to intermittent phase...we’re still moving up to a level that the dog will feel with distractions right? My dog works at a level 4 or 5 in the house and yard, but out on walks or on a long lead, I can’t get anything out of her til level 25 at times. Is there a different way to go about this? I have a 5month old hound that I love to give its space to explore in our yard but he sometimes gives me a hard time wanting to come back inside . He does know his commands but he thinks he's slick. You have probably answered this question many times. I apologize if you have and for asking it here again. What is the difference between the continuous vs the tap tap tap? I noticed that at times you said you were going to do continuous but I heard the sound box going tap tap tap. I was thought to use continuous and when the dog learned that to start using tap tap tap. I never really understood why. Could you explain when you use continuous vs tap tap tap. Also I want to thank you for all you do.

Hey man. Any comment on e collars with different settings such as vibration ? Just wondering which setting it would be good to start with. I have one with three diff settings, sound, vibrate, stimulation. I figure trying to implement sound first would be the best. Thoughts?

In the conditioning phase, do you want to do all four things in the same training session or work on one at a time and then in a few days move on to the next?

Do you have any videos on retraining the e collar to a dog who had it improperly used? Ie. A dog that now is afraid/shuts down when the Ecollar gets put on? My dog was accidentally shocked and since then he's been timid when I put it on. He still performs but his body seems nervous instead of excited

When do you stimulate? Do you stimulate to get her attention or do you keep stimulating till you completes her command ?

I have 3 dogs and I am curious if I should get 3 collars or 1. Two of my dogs are trained already but have some issues come up and one is a 6 month old puppy that is going through training and definitely need it. Any advice?

Do you have any videos on e collar dependence? I’m training a dog to be my SDIT and would love to utilize this tool but am scared my gsd will become dependent on it (the organization I’m on doesn’t believe in the ecollar)
