Sounds good. Show us the caulking procedure you're talking about, TIA.

The challenge is building codes in many areas require minimum of R-20 wall assembly insulation. So 2" of closed cell spray many be thermally sufficient, little insulation would fail insulation inspection in many areas of the country.

Ya we know...That isn't what we are talking about. We are looking at the power of 2" and what it can do, not compliance for white papers...

Sometimes we get too focused on R value as a number. Its easy to forget R value for insulation is measured in laboratory conditions. Structures are rarely equal to the test conditions. The main advantage I see in spray foam is its resistance to wind washing. Fiber based insulation goes to pot if the wall assembly isn't air tight. Spray foam's ability to air seal and your additional caulking detail makes that wall perfom as good as it possibly can. The only way to make that wall perfom better is for the foam to be exterior insulation instead of cavity insulation.

Any experience with housewalls made of aerated concrete and closed spray foam from the inside on a steel frame mounted on the walls? Here in Denmark a lot of houses are made of AC. I just had my floor construction made out of 10 cm closed spray foam, heating system clipsed on an covered with 5 cm of floating putty, all made by professionals. Now I'm consideting putting it on my 19 cm from 1958 AC walls. I have central ventilation system with heat recovery in all of the 98 sqm house.

Thx for responding. Sprayfoam are not usual here i Denmark. Would like to know if you ever use steelframe instead of tree. And do you use a respect distance between the wall and frame,.

Looks like it would be difficult to deal with heat loss from window headers. Not sure how that can be solved and still retain the strength.

Double glue-beam for weight and then rigid board or SPF in front - of course this applies to new construction, no one goes to that cost on retros.

The results of 2" of CCSF is amazing...but doesn't get us there in CZ6 & 7. IRC 2021 is pushing towards R30 (bureaucrats!!). What is your preferred solution for new construction w/2x6" walls? What are your thoughts on flash & batt with Rockwool? Is there a cost or other advantage to flash & batt with Rockwool, or would you simply fill the cavity with 2 lb CCSF?

  • @SprayJones

To be clear, this video is for walls, not roofs. I'm finding that roofs are another story... I have 2-1/2" on the underside of my roof deck in SW CO. It is enough to do a fairly good job of keeping the heat in, but in the summer, it does not sufficiently keep the heat out. I believe this is mainly due to thermal bridging by the trusses and rafters. That means I'm losing heat in the winter as well, but the heat just runs a bit more to keep up, whereas in the summer, heat builds up because I don't have A/C. This is an ICF house, so I'm a big fan of spray foam for sealing but on a roof deck, for a dwelling, I think more than 2 or 2-1/2" is needed to do a sufficient job of insulating. OR perhaps the truss members must be fully encapsulated, so that they can't transmit heat though... This was not really feasible with my TJI rafters in our cathedral style ceiling, though they are covered for closer to 3-1/2"... I'm presently adding R19 batts to the ceiling cavities for sound damping (rain on a tin roof) and hopefully a bit of help with keeping heat from the roof deck out. Then tongue and groove pine. Hopefully this will be enough to keep heat out in the summer months...

  • @bpdp379

Agree the truss must be encapsulated. My shop was designed for a double layer truss, so I had them wrapped entirely to prevent thermal bridging and air leakage between them which would definitely have caused condensation....

How much does good spray gun like u use cost? If I build another new home Am definitely going with this. I don’t know what it is but I would really like to grab that gun and go to town with it. I know probably hard work once u have did 1000-2000ft just something about it makes me want to do it. Am road superintendent have been for 25years so nothing I’ve ever done before I was a welder for 3 years before that. Spray foam just gets everything I don’t know why we’re all not just using it. Is there anything any better?

The upfront cost is more expensive than alternatives. It's harder to work around after, and has had some bad press about the blowing agents used being mega bad for the environment. All that being said, I plan on having the roof of the workshop I'm building spray foamed. Walls will be batts or otherwise so I can easily run utilities in the future as needed.

This is a nothing statement - one look at a data sheet can dispel this wild talk. I have numerous videos on the subject in the health and safety playlist. The study of the SPF & VOC is the best for any insulation product on the market and some of the most advanced tests that are currently developed.
