Hi sweet people!
It's me again! I've got a pronunciation video for you! A blast from the past :-) (I used to make a lot of pronunciation and accent videos!) Don't worry - I've got lots of these to come! I like teaching about culture, behaviour, pronunciation, vocabulary, all of it!
So! Today's video is going to give you some tools to make sure you are understood. It can be very embarrassing when you make mistakes and are asked to repeat things again and again - you feel like you just want the ground to swallow you up in that moment!
I talk about silent letters, minimal pairs, and the difference between V and B - plus another little trick that has really helped me! I hope you enjoy it and find it useful! Let me know in the comments :-)
Hit the subscribe button so you get notified when I release my weekly Friday videos! I would so appreciate that as it really supports my growing channel :-) I'm going to be making shorts soon and they will be a Wednesday weekly feature! Some point in October :-)
Thank you so much for your continued support, honestly!!
As always - be confident, positive & happy! See you next Friday!

Hi Kat , from the first Autumn- like -weather day of this year in Holland . I went shopping in man - departments of clothings stores this week for new , thicker - material shirts to (early - ) adapt to lower Autumn temperatures . Staff girls assured me that I was early enough in the Autumn season this year and that my "common size L (Large) " warm shirts were still there. - Your diafragm tips from last week are really helping me to get more oxygen in , these techniques even relaxed my muscles all over the body , and I practised to my heart's content to lower the speed of talking and sound more sonorous , ( like a bellowing Stag in Autumn - the Rutting Season ) . Greetings , " Yours Staunchest Student " .

Hi Katharine, Thank you for teaching us in a lovely manner. Your every video is full of knowledge and wisdom. We are not only learning a language from you but also English culture or rather I should say you are a culture! I find English both a funny language and weird one especially in terms of spellings as you know better than us. Today's lesson is extremely useful for all types of learners regardless of their levels. Regarding the silent letters, I've found a rule and that is knowing about Consonants and Vowels. I think, in English the words cannot be pronounced without vowels. for example If I want to utter these two letters bd as a word, I can't without adding a vowel in between them. I can only pronounce them as BD not Bed. To pronounce Bed I must insert 'E' in between the two letters. Right. Now let's talk about the silent letters in words such as these ReceiPT, KNowledge, deBT, couLD, shouLD etc. and find out why they are silent? The rule is; if two consonants are together in a word without a vowel, the first letter won't be pronounced or remain silent like in Know or receiPt. the letter K and P will remain silent. In most of the cases, the first letter is not pronounced when two consonant are together in a word, however, as I said earlier that the English language is weird, there are some cases where the second letter will remain silent, for example, in words like these; climb, thumb, womb, limb, comb, succumb tomb, numb, climbing, plumbing, bomber, crumb, dumb etc.In all these words, the letter B is silent. I hope the rule explained above makes sense!

Hi barbaraavato6740 and those interested! Katherine is of course absolutely right. The 'h' is (almost) always pronounced in English. In fact if you put a sheet of paper just before you mouth when you pronounce the word 'horse' for example, you must see the sheet fluttering and soaring in the air because you expire some air when you say it. Now there are indeed a few exceptions to that rule when the 'h' is not pronounced. It is silent! It means that when you say them, the sheet above (before your mouth) must not move an inch or a iota :-). These words are: hour /ˈaʊə/ (aau-ə) UK ; /ˈaʊɚ/ (aau-rr) US --> pronounced like the possessive 'our' honour /ˈɒnər/ (on-ə) UK ; honor /ˈɑːnɚ/ (aan-r) US honest /ˈɒnɪst/ (on-ist) UK ; /ˈɑːnɪst/ (aan-ist) US heir /ɛə/ UK ; /ɛr/ US --> pronounced like 'air' A heir is a person who inherits something. And of course all their derivatives such as: hourglass, honorific, honesty etc. Sometimes some words like herb or homage are pronounced with a silent 'h'. Note that the name of the letter H itself should be silent when you pronounce it: H, h /eɪtʃ/ (eytch). These words have a French origin where the eitches at the beginning of words are always silent. Hope that helps (with expired 'eitches' lol) ;-)
