Ok, this video is my gold at the end of the rainbow. Now, any tips on how to alter a boned bodice? The dress I bought ended up being a size too big.

Love the video! The dress I’m hemming is made out of almost a jersey knit type material? I think. What would you recommend for the tension?

I just did this with a knit lining of a dress. I used a regular zigzag but you might want to try a minimal zigzag, almost not noticeable. Or a coverstitch machine if you can.

Thank you!!! This was so helpful. How about for a satin dress?

Hi Laura :D for a satin dress it will be the same procedure. My note will be to make sure to iron your hem and pin it before sewing with a topstitch. A satin material is easier to sew, so as long as you iron and pin, when you go sew in the sewing machine it will be smooth

If the lining is meant to be 2” higher than the outside then should I do that as well. I’m working on a dress with 3 layers. The inner layer 3rd is higher than the 2 outer layers..

Hey Mari :D! Depends, since the main fabric will be the first layer you want the other lining layers to be higher than the main fabric. If the length of the 3rd does not reach (like if its still short enough you can't see it) the amount you're cutting from the main fabric and the lining then you don't need to cut it. If it does affect it, then yes cut 2'' higher. I hope this explanation makes sense.

Hello, I will be doing a mid weight satin material, what’s the best tension for that? Thank you!

Hello :D When sewing satin on the sewing machine, cut fabric samples to test tension setting, normally a looser tension is best, because Satin does not do well with tight tension. And the stitch length is 3 - 4 mm for the stitch length.

Hi, which needle do I use for silk fabric, and what tension and stitch on my machine? Thank you

Hi :D! When sewing silk on the sewing machine, use a thin universal or sharp sewing machine needle sizes 70/10, 65/9, and 60/8. As for the tension on the sewing machine use a smaller stitch around 1.5-2. When sewing silk garments one of the best seams is the French seam.

I'm attempting to hem a pleated chiffon dress. Am I been too ambitious? If not, what would be best sewing machine setting, please. Muchísimas gracias!

Hey :D It’s a challenge, but not impossible, you got this! My tip for hemming your chiffon dress is to use tissue paper to stop the fabric from shifting as you cut this lightweight fabric. Also, hand sew a basting stitch, before stitching the hem in the sewing machine. And keep your machine stitches short for chiffon, 12 to 20 stitches per inch. Do not press on the machine fast, go slow when stitching. I hope this helps!

Hi I’m altering a dress for a friend its a satin like material but is polyester I was wondering if hemming tape is another option or is it best to just sew it

  • @slowfashionstyle

Hemming tape is another option. I would suggest to consider the option you see best fit. With hemming tape you will hem it faster, but after a few washes can start dissolving and so undoing the work. In comparison, sewing it will take longer, but will last. I hope this info helps :)

Chiffon is very delicate and slippery. I would say to hand sew it. If it’s a lot to hand sew for the hem, before sewing in the machine, I suggest to use starch spray to stabilize the fabric. I hope this helps ☺️
