Those linear motion lead screw actuators have come a long way and is showing up in many applications. The couple applications I had to work on was there was one used to release bucket pins on a quick attach loader bucket. And the other one was used on a Vermeer SC505 stump grinder to engage and disengage the clutch. I believe they got their debut as a electric powered trailer tongue jack... As far as which is better hydraulic or electric, it all depends on the application. hydraulic would be more bulky with more component parts to make up the hydraulic circuit. Versus the electric version which is compact. The decision to use the electric powered actulator was a good choice. Just install a unit to suit your clamping pressure needs... I believe the guys did a fantastic job with fabricating a piece of shop equipment. And to all the naysayers, build your own make sure you record it with a video and then post it and let us see what you come up with.
