ProForm Tour de France cbc MAX RESISTANCE MODIFICATION - same as ProForm Sport CX from Sam's Club?

How to increase the max resistance on the Proform tour de france cbc from costco. Paul said the ProForm Sport CX from Sam's Club has this ability to I opened the bike up to see for myself. The manual doesn't say anything about doing this, and I have not seen the ProForm Sport CX Sams club bike yet but i hear it's the same thing basically, but different color.
One of the biggest cons of the costco bike, the proform tour de france cbc is the max resistance in the stock form. you can modify the max resistance of the proform bike from costco however, and it makes a big difference. Compared to the peloton bike, it's still not as much resistance, but it does bring it up quite a bit. The ProForm Sport CX from sams club may be next on my list, let me know if you want to see the sams club indoor cycling bike compared to the peloton or anything else.

Thanks. Just couple notes: 1. Do not need to remove the stop button that could be tricky for some people. Just remove the two screws of the cover, and the plastic cover could be moved around with enough space to play. - if one has to remove the stop button, follow the push rod down, you will see a lock nut with a hex-bolt, a lot easier to remove the locknot/bolt here and pull out the the whole stop button rod, than playing with the stop button on top. 2. If you have a 8mm small wrench, you could easily play with the two nuts as shown in the video for a fairly precise adjustment without playing with the springs/magnets. 3. One should understand that, to save the cost, each bike company makes their hardware compatible with what it's designed to be, including the materials themselves and the mechanism. Moving the magnets towards the flywheel too much obviously puts a lot more force on various parts than designed, e.g., bottom brackets, chain, etc. I'm yet to see how much effect this could lead to on the lifetime of various parts, but yes, this adjustment definitely improves the resistance of this

You were lucky to receive the model with 4 magnets on the magnetic resistance assembly. I have this exact same bike from Costco and I, like many others, only have 3 magnets, so our resistance is even less. After months of going back and forth with Proform support, they sent me a new assembly, again with only 3 magnets.

Thanks! I was led to this video by watching another one of your videos in which you compared a number of bikes to your really most expensive one. Here are my comments: First, I was surprised that the flywheel was irregular, so that when you got the magnets really close to the flywheel, sometimes they rubbed against the flywheel, and sometimes they didn't, depending on the rotational position of the flywheel. This situation indicates to me that even when you have the magnets just slightly farther away so that they are never rubbing against the flywheel, you still have a difference in distance between the magnets and the flywheel, depending on the rotational position of the flywheel. This would mean that your resistance is irregular as you pedal along. That is not the type of thing I would want to expect from magnetic resistance. My second comment is this: If you increase the maximum resistance of the bike, and you use that resistance level, particularly while really making an aggressive effort, you might put extra stress on the belt, and maybe you would break or tear the belt sooner, I don't know. However, the good thing is that you have so many different bikes that if you break or tear a belt on one of them, you can just use one or more of the others until you get your repairs done. Here's something funny I have noticed: The bikes I have seen online that have magnetic resistance seem to always have rubber belts, whereas those with mechanical friction resistance sometimes have chain drive systems. I don't know of any magnetic resistance bikes that have chain drives, though. Maybe the manufacturers are trying to sell the idea of quiet operation, in which case magnetic resistance and a belt drive go together.

I did it! I only made the first adjustment you showed us and it was enough to get the resistance to even more of a max I didn’t even mess with the spring. The factory max resistance was just not enough. I’d say this new adjustment has the magnets touching the flywheel by millimeters. Took under 10 mins for me to do the entire process. Great hack, thanks for the video! I’m so happy cause this bike was sold at a great price!

I have had this bike for 17 months now. I have no need to increase the resistance from the standard factory as the max resistance setting of 16 is more than I want to pedal. The main reason for my comment is a couple of months ago the resistance appeared to not work. Even though there was enough "juice" in the batteries to change the resistance number, the magnet didn't move. After changing the batteries, that problem was fixed. It's also worth noting that the manual on page 22 says if you see CH0 OR CH1, you must recalibrate the resistance system. In brief, remove the batteries and then press any button on the console for 20 seconds. Then replace the batteries in the console. While I wouldn't recommend buying an Apple Watch because of the cost, if you have one, it works well with the Pro Form. Select "workout" and then "indoor cycle" when you ready to start a ride. This gives you a constant heart rate reading while on the bike. Yes, there are other ways to monitor heart rate as well at a much lower cost.

Just wanted to say Thank You! for this. I've used the bike off and on this past year, but with winter coming this was the perfect modification to make it way more challenging. I can't believe the difference, resistance 8 now feels like 12 did before I modified it. And 16... WHOA! Going to take some time before I can handle that! Also, for anyone that finds the location of the computer annoying, I took the computer and it's bracket off the tablet rack, and attached it with zip ties to the horizontal handlebar underneath he tablet rack. Just run the zip ties on either side of where the bracket holds the computer, loop through where you can reach the battery compartment, and then zip it around the handlebar. Now it's no trouble running the iFit app and having the resistance buttons right there.

Piece of cake to do the adjust, made a huge difference. It also made the lower resistances higher. I'm planning to replace the display mount with a 24" touchscreen all in one windows pc that has a vesa mount. Per the comment below I tried adding some additional magnets and it DOES work. My best guess is that the additional magnets added another 15%-20% to the already increased resistance that this tutorial provided. First, I tried placing the magnets on top of the radius metal that the resistance cable attached to, and I didn't see any real change. So I moved the factory resistance magnets farther from the flywheel and added them to the underside. It was at this point that I realized the factory magnets alternate in polarity so I matched that and I placed the additional units as best they would fit: 2 under the rear magnet, 2 under the second from the rear, 1 on the second from the front (I couldn't fit one under the front magnet), then I was able to add 3 more directly on the radius metal in front of the first factory magnet. I threw the last two magnets on top of the radius metal with the polarity matching what was on the underside. Knowing about the polarity, the magnets may have worked on top of the radius metal but placing the new magnets directly on the factory magnets would seem like it would still maximize whatever the compound strength of the new and factory magnets that would be the case if there were thick steel separating them and allowing the neighboring magnets to offset each other from top and bottom on a diagonal. This may mess with some of the metrics when using the IFIT app but I had to adjust the resistance that the IFIT trainers were calling out anyway. Ultimately, the big thing is matching their cadence right? What is the needed resistance for someone who is 120 pounds is different than someone who is 220 or a fit person versus out of shape, so I feel like a lot of people need to over-ride the IFit auto resistance anyway. These are the magnets I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FZ2VMG8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Question about calibration of some of the metrics. If you increase the "16" resistance from your 60ish Peloton to 80ish Peloton, how would the computer know the resistance is higher? I don't know how it measures resistance and determines the work you re doing, but if it is factory set to 16 being so much and you change it, w/o recalibrating, you won't be recording the work/effort correctly and most likely not getting credit for all the exercise you did. Has anyone asked ProForm about this??

cher, i should have better explained myself. it is easier to adjust that first thing so if you can get the magnets close enough by simply turning the first adjustment you don't need to even do the second adjustment, but i guess it may vary bike to bike how they are set up initially

I noticed that it says to store the bike at max resistance, which I found odd, but I had observed that when I bought it before assembly, it was at max resistance. When I put the batteries in, it adjusted to lower resistance. Thus, *_the first thing I did was set the bike to max resistance and pull the batteries. This meant the bike didn't change the resistance on me._* I then found it straightforward to adjust the max resistance as indicated. I have to say, however, the first six resistance levels are still useless. In my opinion, it's programmed wrong at the factory, and all 16 resistance levels should be closer together and closer to the flywheel. It is a bit frustrating that the flywheel isn't very true, or it could be dialed in even better. My guess is the more expensive bikes are more finely tuned (and we know they have more levels.) The stepper motor seems capable of doing this. It's just a matter of tighter tolerances, I figure. Since I intend to go by my heart rate I don't really care too much that the resistance isn't "accurate," but I'd like it to be precise. My bet is that each resistance level change closer to the flywheel should be a smaller increment, since magnetic attraction increases more intensely the closer you get. It could really benefit from all 16 levels being valid, but as I say, the first six are basically useless. Anyway, thanks for the tips!

PS: Jim M's magnets may help make the lower resistance levels useful. I definitely want to play with that. Hoping there won't be permanent effects from using the magnets, but I think it's worthwhile.

  • @gousc2622

The reason the bike should be stored at max resistance is because the resistance motor uses battery energy to pull the magnets away from the flywheel at low resistance. The resistance mechanism is at equilibrium at max resistance. To obtain lower resistance, the magnets are pulled away from the flywheel which takes battery power. I doubt that the resistance would remain at a lower resistance once the bike is not in use for a while since the control unit would turn off and no longer supply power to the resistance motor but if it does, the cable and resistance motor connecting to the magnets would be strained.

Can't speak for this exact model, but on the smart power 10, the power meter doesn't measure actual torque. It uses a calculation based on resistance setting and cadence. If your resistance is wrong because the magnet array is too near/far from flywheel. Power will be completely off

Hey I purchased this bike and am having the same issue as other people in your comment section. While using the iFit classes the max resistance is set to 6, you can see this in the class details. This is really frustrating bc the bike is capable of going to 16. I am hoping you can check it out on yours and make a video highlighting this. One of the big reason I purchased this bike is for the auto adjustments during the classes but the max is 6 making all the classes too easy. Maybe if you make a video it will give them a kick in the ass to fix this. 🤞🏽

It's interesting because the app under equipment information lists the max resistance as 16. I would love for you to do a quick video about this addressing it and hopefully getting ifits attention.
