The News reader said " and we remember Helen Reddy who passed away today " My heart sank as the realisation hit that one of the world's greatest singers had died. Helen was very ' Australian ' a great ambassador for us as Australians. As a man, I love to sing " I am Woman " very loud. Helen helped to emancipate 51% of Australia's population at a time when Gough Whitlam came to Government in December 1972. It was great timing. Gough's Government was progressive not conservative. After 23 yrs of Liberal/Country Party Government keeping Australia in the dark, Labor had to work fast. Abolishing conscription, bringing our troops home from Vietnam, Women's Rights, Aboriginal Rights, Funding Arts and Culture, JJ 1540 AM Radio, Countdown on ABC TV with Molly Meldrum, the long list goes on.......... As an 11 yr old in a very political household, I remember thinking that this woman, Helen Reddy, was the voice of these great social changes. Well, she was a major part of a very important time in Australian history. She was a very strong and powerful singer who sang brilliant songs. I love her very much and am very sad that she has passed away.

That was very beautiful what you wrote. I was born at the beach in Southern California, not far from where Helen lived most of her life. I remember being very young and always loving her, like you did. Your insight to her relevance on Australian history was fascinating. She was an impressive woman to be a woman's rights activist, probably one of the greatest talents, and singers the world has ever produced, and have the empathy to touch the hearts of two boys on opposite sides of the globe. I'm proud she lived in Los Angeles, and I'm happy she was Australian. I've been to Australia many times, and it's a place, and a people very similar to America. I think that's why she felt so at home in California.

Helen was never much for being showbizzy. She has always been straight-forward, honest and has certainly the author of her own success.

Helen Reddy...had the courage to travel to America as a single mom & be successful in the competitive world of entertainment! Obviously a woman with spunk & respected for her talent & still appears to have it! What a legacy she left...a hard act to follow!

A woman I knew with a masters degree in music education told me a lot of singers lose or ruin their voices by yelling. She had great facial expression to compliment her singing of I Am Woman in the video rendition.

My brother makes fun of me, because I am a big fan of the music group "ABBA". So one day I had to pick him, his teenagers and their grandfather up after a hokey game and tortured them by playing "Dancing Queen".
