I've had the Adam A5Xs running through a Firestudio Project for almost 10 years. They have travelled with me from Spain to Italy and now Belgium, and I can tell you that they are one of the best pieces of audio/music equipment I have ever purchased. I never bought a sub, but seeing this makes me think I should (gotta catch that low A on the bass/guitar :)

A long time ago, I purchased a pair of KRK V4 speakers - mainly, because I didn't have money for something bigger at the time. But their sound convinced me of the advantage of a small mid driver - high speed movement with no cone wobble made for amazing clarity of sound at the cost of deep bass. The clarity beats anything I've heard with larger woofers, like 7". That's why I think the A3X are a perfect combination, with a small, fast woofer and the ribbon tweeters! Around that price, the Genelec 8020 have better protection, are lighter and sound really good too. In the future, I will continue to buy the smallest studio monitors and augment them with a matched sub woofer that I can turn off and on as needed.

I have a pair of 5” jbl’s. I’ve considered getting a subwoofer for my ax fx. I’m trying to decide between a power amp or a subwoofer.

I dont think foam pads do anything for bass reflection. Low frequency waves are omnidirectional so if you have any trouble with the really low end you could apply something like a bass trap in the corner of your room, don't try to dampen the bottom of the desk because it will do nothing :P

I am thinking of getting the same setup as my desk is quite small, I'd rather get smaller monitors and place the same sub on the floor so that can take care of the lower frequencies. Would you recommend the same setup for music, games and movies?

Definitely, I use my monitors not just to make music. Most of the times I listen to music, watch videos or films or play some games and everything sounds killer!

Here's a newb question, I'm thinking of getting this exact set-up. But I am wondering how do you connect the Sub into the equation? Is it connected directly to the audio interface or are the monitors connected to the sub and sub to the interface? It would be amazing if you could help me out with this!

The Sub seems to have two sections one above and one below to connect the XLR cables, which one did you use and what is the difference if I may ask? Is the bottom (Female XLR) connected to the interface and top (Male XLR) connected to the monitors?

I got a pair of Adam F5 for almost no money. They're great, but I still check my low end on ATH M50´s and iPhone earbuds just to be safe; can´t really afford or justify a sub right now.

Great review! think I'll go for the T5V when I can, the need for sub puts me off personally. I'm pretty sure you can have the sub any where, bass has an Omni directional quality so not sure you'll benefit much from additional treatment for the sub; someone correct me if I'm wrong though!

Getting bigger monitors will help with the subs but didn't replace having a real sub though.

50 watts per speaker with a max of 106dB for the pair without sub.

Jack-XLR from the interface (left/right) to the sub, then XLR-XLR from the sub to the speakers!

Hey, wanted to know if its possible to switch off the sub while keeping the main monitors on? if yes what are the possibilities .. or is the sub pemanently on when its installed?

Rolf Hebling The sub can be turned on individually! It doesn't have to be on, even though the monitors get their signal from it.

Do these have any white noise hiss? I had a pair of JBL LSR305s that I hated due to hiss. I've been looking for a replacement

All active Monitors hiss when turned on (hum is ground loop but hiss like white noise is normal)

@@RathOX Not all of them. Mostly the cheaper budget-friendly ones, like the aforementioned JBL' s. Neumann KH 120 has no audible hiss, whatsoever, and I am pretty sure that the higher Adam series, like the S one, has nothing too. So it's not exactly "normal", but it sure is a by-product/indication of lower quality production materials, mainly the built-in amps.

the hssss sound is often on the new speakers with an ampli class D. The ampli classe D make a hssss sound when no music is playing. For example I have here my HS7 and zero hsss sound. Eris 4.5 and KRK RP5 too. But I have tested the Kali LP6 and it was horrible lol ...... If you see "amp class AB or class B" often its ok ;o) check you ground too in your house !! often parasit from the PC (i had in the past).

Professional room treatment that is measured and stuff - no. But some treatment is recommendable, the less direct reflections and echoes, the easier the mixing.

The sub IS necessary, to me personally at least, with those A3X. They just go down to 60Hz which is not very low. The sub just fills up underneath and gives you an idea on what's going on in the lowend, which is the hardest to mix right

A year and a half later, do you still feel you need the sub with these for guitar based music? Do you regret not getting the A5x? I'm about to buy either the A3x or A5x and can't decide.

Yes, the sub is absolutely necessary. It doesn't need to be loud but if it's not there it's just missing something. Still very, very happy with this 2.1 setup in my tiny room. If I had a bigger room I would maybe think of the A5Xs and a 10" sub but it's a long time ahead until I have a bigger studio.

Zz3123 Onaofe I use a Nikon D5100 with a 18-105mm lens, sometimes for close-up shots of gear I use a 1.8 35mm lens (not in this video though)

Hey what's up Soulhenge. I watched your video a few weeks ago and ultimately purchased the Adam A3x 2.1 system. My first sub produced zero sound, so I got it replaced. But even now, with my new sub7, though it produces sound, I experience these pops from the speaker as if I'm pushing it too much, but I'm sure I am not. Please help me figure out if this is a defective sub7 or if this is just the nature of the speaker itself. One example for now, if you would be so kind as to help me figure out if I personally need a different system that can get louder or if I need to replace me sub7, let's take the pop country song by Russel Dickerson called Blue Tacoma. I have each monitor and the sub at 0db. I have the sub7 set to 85hz. Once the chorus is playing, I can hear popping from the sub. KZread is up all the way. My computer is up all the way, and the output nob on my Steinberg UR22 pointing straight up. If you yourself play a bass heavy genre and can crank your system quite loud without getting these pops (physical, not digital), then that will basically tell me I just need to get mine replaced. I'm going on one month but I have a 45 day return policy, so please reply! Thank you much! The monitors sound so good I really don't want to give them back, but hey, maybe I just need something louder. Idk... THANKS!

Millies It's hard to judge how loud you're listening to your music, it should handle a fair amount of bedroom loudness and remain clear. They're not made to smash a club party though ;)

What if you could run a test for me please? Put both monitors and sub straight up to 0db and let me know if when you crank the volume slowly, do you experience ANY sort of popping? Pretty sure if you can make your interface go over the halfway mark to the max without popping then it's my sub. If you do hear any popping then I know not to turn it up more. Would that be okay with you? Again, thank you!

to think all this time you didn't have "proper" studio monitors yet your mixes sounded way better than mine and I had Yamaha HS5s this whole time.. hahah I suck.

Keith Saavedra well I knew how mixes were supposed to sound on that hi-fi, so I got them kinda right. However the Adams helped me to further improve my skills!

Angle is not enough and doesn't do much. The tweeter must be at your ear level.

yes german quality is the best

A great video but you should practice eye contact with the audience (camera) :)
