I totally agree with you re having a subwoofer. Our ears hear sounds much lower than virtually all regular loudspeakers and monitors will produce, so why wouldn’t people want to be able to hear what’s going on in productions. Like you say, it’s not about having more bass although, being pedantic, there will be more bass but it’s only because of the extra extension you will get form adding a sub. Life is full of subsonic noise... just like many tweeters go way above the human hearing range - there’s a reason they do, it’s all about not being able to detect cut-off, which also adds to the overall sonic ambience. Go into any high street and take note of a large HGV lorry moving along in heavy traffic, few speakers (other than subs) will be able to reproduce the low end frequencies you’ll be hearing from the lorry’s exhaust note alone. Many synthesisers are capable of producing incredibly low frequencies, so I’d say it’s best to be able to hear them as they should be heard.

Really insightful video, thanks for this. I'm currently trying to work out what purchases to make for my studio and I'm really struggling on the monitor part of it. I've narrowed it down to either Yamaha HS8's or Presonus E8 XT's and no sub, or an E5 XT + a sub. Thing is, the room isn't great - maybe 12 square meters and all the conventional knowledge says get smaller monitors and definitely have no sub. But bass is really important to me, not like emphasized and overpowering bass, but like you talked about: even representation all the way down. It's doing my head in trying to make this decision, but if what you're saying here works then there might be a chance. I might just buy a sub and reference 4 no matter what monitors I end up choosing, then do my best at treating the room and see how far that gets me.

Adam. I'm planning to get a pair of Yamaha HS7, which is a cheap studio monitor. I'll use it mainly for playing music or guitar with amp sim. I don't record or mixing anything. It just happens nowadays I prefer a flat frequency speaker for my PC than a multimedia one. My room, where I put my PC, is just a normal room and doesn't have any sound dampening material like studio. If I put HS7 in my room, do you think it will sound more awful compared to multimedia speaker ? Do you think I need a subwoofer ? Thanks for your answer.

Hello, I have my sub Adam 10 "MK2 And ADAM S2V couple in my homestudy, the fact is that I have it in the center between my two monitors, under my desk, if I leave it with the 0 ° phase and with sonarworks, the graph gives me a + -3db waveform up and down, between 100 Hz and 28 Hz. And if I change it to phase 180 °, I have a +6 dbs rise in the graph, from 80 Hz at 28 Hz. No waveform, all this measured in the whole room The question is that with phase at 0 °, as the graph says, At ear, I perceive less serious, and with the phase at 180 ° I perceive more serious. My question is, which of the two configurations do you think would be in the correct phase? I'm lost.

i agree what kind of music do you make? I had the same monitors and returned them because the low end wasn't making a significant difference and punching enough. If you make hip/hop or bass house I'm thinking a decent sub can get that low end I want. Everyone says headphones works fine but eventually I think you hit a plateau and I'm thinking a sub/acoustics is the last step. You figure anything out?

I'm surprised that you've gone down the 'sub + smaller speakers' route, because on video at least, your room looks relatively large. I'm looking at doing the same, borrowed a friend's sub before he sold it to upgrade and the transformation to the quality of the sound in my [partly treated] room was remarkable. And that was with 8" mid/bass driver monitors, so not the smallest of speakers. Everything sounded and weirdly even felt just far tighter and more even from about 150 Hz down. I know it's often said that 'bass isn't directional so sub placement doesn't matter' [don't think I completely agree, matters less is probably closer to the truth]. Do you think the position of the woofer in the sub matters, woofer on the bottom compared to on the front?

I have a pair of Adams T5V. They're set up in a home office environment and sound 'good' but could a sub improve matters in the mid to high end? They're sat on a desk very near the wall and as it's a working office / hobby room (12'x10'), room treatment just isn't going to happen. I'd like a T10s sub but cost is prohibitive. What third party subs in a lower price bracket would you recommend to go with the T5Vs? Thanks.

A sub would be a terrible idea in that environment, if you’re already in a box room. Treatment is possible, even if it’s just acoustic foam mounted in a temporary way (picture pin in the wall, CD glued to the back of the foam panel) or some loft insulation under the desk

  • @FlatTire

You don’t mix for sub woofers, but they are supposed to play those low frequencies that you can not hear or feel on your small nearfields. If you can not hear the low end of a kick you will most definite try to compensate for it while mixing, and than you end up with boomy mix in your car. So, subwoofer in studio is not to give you your HiFi stereo feel but to enable you to extend what you actually hear of feel in your low end.

😮Complete bullshit. You don’t need a subwoofer for mixing, and are most likely hurting your mixes by incorporating one. Professional 🎉studios in large part don’t use them (for mixing anyway). NS10’s, the industry standard for decades, only got down to 60hz, which still covers the fundementals of bass. Jarre could not be a more irrelevant voice on the subject, and dusting him off will not fly here. The strategy is to have other references-another pair of reference monitors, hifi speakers, quality headphones…your phone, these are all indespensable for mixing. Now, if you can calibrate your room and monitor + sub setup properly, I wouldn’t argue against having one as an added reference, but it still wouldn’t be necessary to have and should stay switched OFF the majority of the time.
