Wow -- this music video blew my mind! One of my favorites I've seen in a long time. And Taemin? The talent is off the charts -- the singing, the dancing, the commitment, everything. What else else from Taemin should I react to and analyze?

Thank you for checking out Taemin! This was very interesting, I've been listening to Guilty non-stop and thanks to you I noticed some things in the orchestration that flew over my head the first hundred times lmao I second everyone who recommended Criminal, it's really a masterpiece. Taemin has many gems in his solo discography, but above all I'd say Clockwork, Rise and Impressionable ;)

I’m a singer and Ive been frustrated with reactions to this track. 80+ percent of Taemin’s fans only ever talk about being obsessed with his beauty and physical body… I mean, dancing. The reaction channels on KZread are mostly people with little insight or knowledge and many don’t analyze a thing. When I say it’s a relief to find you, I hope it doesn’t seem like a small complement because your analysis is a total gift. Taemin’s been working as a dancer since his teens. He is a phenomenon. I think it’s because he’s also been a little bit of an outsider. He had to struggle to get his voice up to par to have a part in his band SHINee - if you don’t know them you’re in for a whole bunch of treats. It’s worth looking at his history. And you seem to be someone who will find lots of fresh musical elements in K-Pop. It is the cutting edge in so many ways. Thank you so very much. Glad I found you. So glad. Now I have to remember to spam you with K-Pop performances you might like and If you do, I might learn from. Do a collab with a Choreographer!!1!!

@@soapwol You have a point. 80% might be a little high, but it's not a census, it's my experience. Is there somewhere you can turn me on to that explores Taemin's art in depth? Can you tell me something about Taemin's style, it's growth, the nature of the material he chooses and what kind of issues he finds worth exploring? Because you've been around longer than me so you know more. To say he's worked hard is something we all agree upon. And that he's gifted. I'm looking for insight into the artist and his expression. Shawols on fan sites do not tend to do this. It's not bad or good. It's just what I've found so far. And I unreservedly am in thrall to SHINee, Taemin, Key, All of them.

Thank you for checking out Taemin. I really appreciate your reaction and analysis. Taemin is the main dancer, and he's phenomenal at it; many consider him the best dancer in K-pop currently. When he debuted at 14, he didn't have a single line. However, his dedication is evident in his growth in music and singing skills, making him one of the most successful male soloists. I hope you continue to explore both his Korean and Japanese discography.

I’m on your channel for the first time, I loved your reaction and I’m so happy you reacted to Taemin! Taemin is a royalty of Kpop, he’s a living legend of this industry! In my opinion he’s truly the best solo artist that has ever come out of South Korea - absolutely unique and unmatched in his artistry. As you can see he’s a truly fantastic vocalist with angelic, seductive voice and very unique tone. This breathiness in his voice is his signature mark, no one sings like him, he’s the king of sensuality. But as you can see he can belt perfectly, so this breathy sound is his stylistic choice, which I personally love. Taemin is also an incredible dancer - considered by many the best dancer in Kpop, which I agree. I just haven’t seen anyone with his skills, uniqueness and level of charisma. I would love a longer format of your videos with detailed analysis of the video, cause in terms of Taemin his MVs are visual and conceptual works of art! Please check out more of his music - Advice, Criminal, IDEA, Want, Move are some of his most famous title tracks with incredible MVs! You have a new subscriber here, thank you for excellent content!

Taemin has been in the industry for more than 15 years as part of the legendary 5-member Kpop group SHINee and he has been a solo artist since 2014. "Guilty" is his title track on his 4th mini Korean solo album. You may find this hard to believe, but when Taemin debuted as a member of SHINee way back in 2008, he didn't have a whole lot of lines in their songs. People even used to make fun of Taemin's singing and they would say that he was tone deaf and couldn't sing. However, it's sort of a misconception that Taemin "couldn't sing." it wasn't that he couldn't sing, it was just that he debuted when he was so young -- he was only 14 years old -- that his voice hadn't really developed yet and he didn't really have a good grasp of how to use his voice and produce the sounds he wanted with it. So, in the beginning, when he sang, he was often flat or his voice cracked or he was off key or out of tune, etc. And because he was being compared to the other members of SHINee who are all 2 to 4 years older than him, and the other members had such phenomenal voices to start out with, it really made Taemin sound like he was lacking. (SHINee are considered THE premier vocal group that everyone dreams of being as good as.) That's why in SHINee's first few songs he only has a few lines, and most of the time he was just given big solo dance breaks to fill the stage at his parts in the song. However, if he was really tone deaf, he never would have become an SM Idol trainee -- SM would have put him on the dance track and probably steered him toward becoming a backup dancer -- and he definitely would have never become the amazing singer that he is today. As you probably know, someone who is truly tone deaf is physically unable to hear the difference in the notes and is unable to carry a tune. Taemin is considered one of the greatest dancers of all time. He has literally been voted one of the top two BEST dancers in all of Kpop by his peers and industry experts. (Kai from EXO -- who happens to be Taemin's best friend since trainee days, and a fellow member of the Kpop supergroup SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) That is why he has been nicknamed the Korean Michael Jackson. Literally everyone in the Kpop industry looks up to Taemin and idolizes him. But Taemin really wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't just a dancer, so he spent a lot of extra time concentrating on vocal lessons and the other SHINee members -- especially Onew and Jonghyun (two of the best vocalists in the industry) -- spent some serious time coaching and mentoring him until he learned what it took to match their vocal range and to use his voice. (For the first year or more after SHINee's debut Taemin spent hours in vocal lessons and he would push himself every day until his nose would bleed because he was so tired and worn out, etc. He practically lived in the training rooms at SM Entertainment.) The ONLY thing the members of SHINee are not good at is lip syncing, so Taemin, and all the members of SHINee, have specifically trained since their debut, to build stamina and endurance, in order to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight in concert, all while performing these intense choreographies and still sound flawless. When you watch a live performance, you may be shocked because Taemin and SHINee sound so perfect live even though they are dancing so intensely, but that is why they are so highly respected by everyone. It's a running joke between fans and the members that you can tell when SHINee are lip syncing because they are so bad at it, that is why they avoid it at all costs. Therefore, when you hear SHINee sing, 95% of the time it will be live. Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing than they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, what you will hear is live vocals. Other Idols and audio sound technicians, etc. who have witnessed the SHINee members performing live are always blown away, because in the parts of the song where most singers would take a break and rely on the backing track vocals to cover their voices so they can catch their breath and recover, this is where the SHINee members actually ramp it up and become their most powerful. Therefore, in Taemin's live performance you will discover that he sounds even better than in the recorded version, all while dancing full out. What makes SHINee so great is that even if they are singing a cappella while performing this high energy choreography, they sound just as amazing. That's why, even as rookies, senior artists would stop what they were doing to watch SHINee's rehearsals on music programs because SHINee's vocal talent is that impressive. When SHINee debuted, they were the first group to demonstrate how it was possible to sing live while performing complex choreography and still maintain stable vocals. Before SHINee, the thought within the industry was that it wasn't possible to sing live and also perform high intensity choreography at the same time. At that time, most groups would either sing live and have simple choreography, or they would have crazy cool choreography, but lip sync to their recorded vocals. SHINee completely changed the Kpop industry and upped the standard of what it meant to be an idol singer. Taemin -- and SHINee -- live is unmatched. It's literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard that all other groups strive to reach, and SHINee are the vocalists that all other artists try to emulate. I think "Guilty" is a continuation of the themes surrounding Taemin's previous releases. Particularly connected to his Never Gonna Dance Again album trilogy -- "2 Kids", "Criminal" and "Idea" -- and Advice album themes. As Taemin has explained, "Guilty" is about a lover who DOESN'T feel guilty about all the bad things they have done in the relationship and they feel no shame or remorse for the pain and suffering they may have caused the other person. Which, if you connect it to the messages from his previous MVs, this easily could be interpreted as a metaphor for everything Taemin has gone through in his career and life. As an idol, he has been manipulated and controlled his whole life. Debuting at 14 years old, Taemin has lived his entire life in the public eye under a microscope, he is expected to be flawless and perfect, and people are constantly telling him what to do and how he should act, etc. However, now that he has turned 30, I think he is embracing a new chapter in his life where he is saying he is no longer going to allow people to manipulate him and he is officially taking back control. In other words, he's not going to feel guilty any more for being himself and doing what makes him happy. With Taemin -- and all the members of SHINee -- you will never get the same thing twice. Everything he releases will be a new style and sound and, yet, it will still be very "Taemin". As SM Entertaiment's experimental boy group, SHINee are meant to be the first to do almost everything, and they are expected to come up with something new that no one has ever seen or heard before with every release of theirs. As Kpop's trendsetters, the members of SHINee reinvent the industry with every comeback. Taemin is literally the artist that everyone within the Kpop industry looks up to and respects. He has released at least one song or album -- most of the time way more than just one -- as part of SHINee, as a member of a project group, as a solo artist or as a member of SuperM every year since SHINee's debut. (Except for the past two years because he was on hiatus while he carried out his public service duties as part of his military requirements.) Therefore, including his full-length albums, mini albums, and singles, etc., as well as his Japanese albums, Taemin has more than a dozen solo albums. Not to mention the 2 albums he has as a member of SuperM. And on top of all that, SHINee currently has 14 full-length Korean and Japanese albums, just as many repackaged albums, numerous mini albums, etc. Plus he has held many solo concert tours, as well as a world tour as a mmber of SuperM, and SHINee has held more than 100 concerts within 6 world tours so far. You have a TON to catch up on. :D Now you need to check out Taemin's Killing Voice performance. I have a feeling when you watch his Killing Voice you will find that hearing him sing "Guilty," as well as his other songs, live that you will be even more impressed. Plus, you need to see one of his live performances of "Guilty" to see the complete choreography. There is a reason why Taemin is like none other.

Taemin confirmed that he had a 30-piece orchestra play for this music. This song was a contender for his 2021, mini-album "Advice". He ultimately went with "Advice" for the title song (which you should definitely check out), but he kept this song in his pocket while going off to serve for his mandatory military duty. He said he needed to rework the song quite a bit to update it for this new mini-album to continue the storyline of his 2020 full-length, 2-part album, "Never Gonna Dance Again" (NGDA), of which "Advice" we thought was the epilogue. However, now it seems that "Advice" and "Guilty" are a continuation of that wonderful storyline. The other songs involved in that storyline are "2 Kids" (NGDA, Act 1 Prologue); "Criminal" (NGDA, Act 1); and "IDEA" (NGDA, Act 2). Taemin debuted with SHINee at the tender age of 14 (Intl. age) as their main dancer. He was chosen by SM through the historically difficult SM open Saturday auditions. Only 8 other idols have ever passed this audition attended by thousands each time. Taemin didn't expect to pass because he didn't know how to sing. He was a self-taught dancer who began at the age of 9/10 by watching his favorite artists, like MJ, Usher, and Rain, and then practicing their moves in his mirror. Subsequently, he was a street dancer before auditioning with SM. Because Taemin is not locked into any one specific, trained genre, he fluidly integrates any other style he learns into his own personal style blending them together seamlessly. This is what makes Taemin distinct as a dancer. Additionally, Taemin regularly adjusts or alters his choreo on the fly per performance to embody how he feels at the moment and according to, as he says, the "character" he is playing. Add all this to his natural fluidity and extreme body control and you get who the industry says is the best dancer in Kpop: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6Nlmq5sj67JYLw.html This is just a small sample of his insane body control and mastery at popping, locking, and isolations. Singing, however, was another issue. Taemin couldn't sing at debut due to immature vocal cords. When it did come time to sing, he didn't have a clue. Thankfully, Taemin had two things in his favor that helped him develop into the phenomenal vocalist he is today: 1) his SHINee brothers, Jonghyun and Onew are two of the most powerful singers in Kpop. They stepped up and tutored Taemin until SM finally allowed him to access vocal coaches. 2) His almost obsessive drive to succeed and being a well-known workaholic. His work ethic is famous among his peers. He said he would practice singing long after curfew, all night long. When his throat refused to sing any more, he would stop and switch to dancing and back again. He did this so much that he would get nosebleeds during the day and fell asleep once during regular practice with SHINee. When Taemin finally started working with vocal coaches, one told him that he would never be a singer and to just stick with dancing. I'm sure this lit a fire under him. By 2010, he worked hard enough to start getting more lines in SHINee songs. In 2014, rather than Jonghyun or Onew, Taemin became the first-ever SM idol from an active boy group to debut as a soloist and also debut three times in multiple generations: 2nd gen (SHINee); 3rd gen (Soloist); 4th gen (SuperM). Now he is one of the most legendary soloists in the industry. Makes me wonder what that vocal coach who told him to stick with dancing thinks now. Lastly, don't be fooled by the lyrics in Taemin's songs. Sure, you can take them at face value, but Taemin/SHINee fans ("Jjakkoongs" = partners & SHAWOLs = SHINee World) know that Taemin can have anywhere from two to three deeper levels of meaning to those lyrics. It's part of his mystique. You must dig through all the symbolism of the MVs (because everything means something), know his history, and be familiar with his Christian worldview (he's a devout Catholic) to get to the heart of many of those lyrics. Adding to all that, Taemin is very into philosophy which also plays a major part in his stories. For instance, some of his concepts in the last few years include: Stockholm syndrome ("Criminal"); Plato's Theory of Forms ("IDEA"); and, for this particular MV, delving into French philosopher, Georges Bataille's book, "L'erostisme" in which he argues that eroticism is "a psychological quest not alien to death." In addition, the SHINee brothers, who are all soloists, will often link their solo work together, as well as their SHINee MVs. For instance, SHINee's 15th anniversary album, "Hard" (2023) links their title song of the same name to primarily Taemin's 2021 title song "Advice" and also Onew's "Circle", as well as some of Key's work, especially with a scene actually taken from Key's song "Hate That". To make matters even more complicated, their collective work may also be connected to SM's Universe storyline, "Kwangya". There's A LOT to unpack with each MV. So there you go, and while this is a long intro., it's really just a brief peek because there is a lot of personal history with Taemin and his other struggles that influence his music as well, like reconciling his faith with his celebrity status which creates a duality of egos (HINT: "Press Your Number", "Want", "Famous", "Criminal", "IDEA", and now "Guilty"). However, all THAT is what makes Taemin and SHINee legendary as well as special and unique. We get to really know who they are as regular people through their music and their strong familial bond. BTW: Taemin also did the show, "Killing Voice" where he sings several snippets of his songs live. He mostly did his b-side ballads that he wishes more people would listen to. They might be interesting for you. Plus, a phenomenal live performance of his song "Rise" with a snippet of "Soldier" can be found here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKCeqdRwf8rHf84.html Lots of beautiful belting with this one! Enjoy!

Prior to becoming a trainee at the age of 11, Taemin had no formal dance training. He started out as a self-taught popper and locker who learned to dance by copying dancers on TV, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. He said he thought dancers like Kpop solo artist Bi Rain and Michael Jackson were cool, so he would try and copy their moves. He debuted as the main dancer of SHINee in 2008 at the age of 14 -- so he had about 3 years of training as a dancer once he became a trainee. Therefore, most of what you see is just natural talent and an unbelievable amount of dedication. Taemin has put in a lot of effort to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today. But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard than himself. He has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. It's said that if Taemin's dance looks easy then it's actually really difficult and if it looks extremely difficult then it's even harder than you imagine. No one moves the way he does and even his backup dancers struggle to keep up with him. Choreographers say he is constantly asking them to make the choreography more difficult and he is never satisfied until the difficulty level is off the charts. As Taemin has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does. Taemin has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. He's also one of the only idols who have debuted in 3 different Kpop generations -- second generation with SHINee in 2008, third generation as a solo artist in 2014 and now fourth generation as a member of SuperM in 2019. You should watch some of Taemin's concert documentaries to see just how hard he trains and works. If you search KZread you will find 2 or 3 from his solo concerts, as well as documentaries/behind the scenes of SHINee's concerts. Taemin doesn't have to try to grab your attention, he just exudes command of the stage. That is what makes him one of the top performers and why he is so popular. Yes, he has literally been voted one of the top two BEST dancers in all of Kpop by his peers and industry experts. That is why he has been nicknamed the Korean Michael Jackson. Literally everyone in the Kpop industry looks up to Taemin and idolizes him. He is the idol that most choreographers dream of getting the chance to work with. Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. Not only is Taemin an amazing dancer but, as you just heard -- because he is a member of SHINee -- he is also a top tier vocalist, who can sing live while performing intricate choreography like this and sound even better live than the studio recording. With more than 15 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots and are all active as a group and as soloists.

Taemin is considered one of the best dancers among kpop idols/korean prefomers (some even consider him the best). He isn't classically trained but orginally self taught before getting more formal training by his agency. Foundationally speaking, his style is street based but over the course of his career, he's became interested in more classical forms of dance and incorporated elements of it into his style as well. One of the most outstanding things abt Taemin tho is that he's not a natural born singer if you will. He started out as solely the main dancer of his group, SHINee, and didn't even have lines in the group's debut song. His growth as a vocalist is more or less legendary within the scene. I will end by recommending you check out more stuff by his group SHINee! Especially Jonghyun and Onew! They are the groups main vocals and have been pretty pivotal in Taemin's own growth as a singer.

This analysis of Taemin's voice and singing choices feels to me like having successfully defended his talent as an artist and performer. He debuted 16 years ago with SHINee as their youngest member at 14 years, the other boys practically raised him and a lot of people ridiculed him, saying he can't sing, he's just a pretty face etc. He worked hard on his journey to becoming the King of Kpop, so many lessons in voice, piano, dance and so forth, he proved all the nay-sayers wrong. Some of my other favorites from him are Criminal, Want, Move, Slave and Thirsty (yes, there is a definite pattern here of one word titles.) You also pretty quickly honed in on his unique MV concept and dancing, he is a definite all rounder, somewhat of a unicorn in this cookie cutter world. Edit: LMAO, why don't I remember posting this comment? AU or what?

Thank you for analyzing Taemin’s new song from a vocal performance perspective. Taemin has always been recognized as the ultimate dancer in Kpop and many people would put emphasis on his movements in dancing when reacting to his work, which is totally fair. But I do believe after all these years his vocal skills has grown so much and this song demonstrated his phenomenal vocal abilities. As a longtime fan as many others, I’m so glad to see his efforts getting recognized ❤🎉🎉🎉

They are the trendsetters of Kpop and no genre is off limits, including Opera for Onew. I think you are the first to talk about the whispering and distorted voice. It was one of the things that I loved how it was incorporated, given that Taemin is representing a deity that is considered a god of good and evil. The first time is when Taemin appears to be fighting a possession. The part of the 'rap' with the distorted voice was like an entity was speaking alongside him. So cool. Taemin has different songs with different styles, he doesn't stick to one fixed style because he likes to experiment. It's a matter of exploring. Its bsides are fantastic too. Thanks for the reaction I loved it!

Also if you like Taemin, you might be interested in the group he comes from, SHINee. SHINee is a 2nd generation kpop group, that are known for their singing and dancing. They really are the idols idol. There are 5 members in SHINee, and each of them have their own solo careers as well. If I were to suggest a SHINee song, I’d probably start with their debut song “Replay”…again thank you for checking out Taemin.

Taemin is one of the best dancers in kpop if not the best. And personally he has one of my favorite vocals. Taemin has said that he started dancing around ten years old after seeing Michael Jackson’s ‘lean forward’ move in smooth criminal. Taemins mom actually encouraged him to audition at SM (his company) because she knew how much he loved to dance. Now look at him, he is one of the biggest kpop soloists, and he’s also been apart of a group for 15 years.

Taemin is absolutely an Artist. I don't see it in the comments yet so I'm going to recommend Advice. It was his lead single on his last mini album and it has a beautiful piano melody that just underscores the whole song. Really though you can't go wrong with Taemin. He has no skips. I also seriously recommend checking out some of his B-sides. They're gorgeous.

I have to say, You are the 1st that has kept my attention of "Knowing Your Stuff". The details were eye opening and although I already appreciate, respect & admire young Taemin as an full fledge KPop Artist, hearing someone breakdown each aspect of what he hears & see's in the song & MV is refreshing to say the least. If you decide to look more into Young Taemin Artistic Background. You will find that he isn't someone that just does a MV... he does a MV with the Drama or Storyline behind the words. Just as you experienced it here. His understanding of words captures himself in each song he embraces... hence the Birth of his MV's. Thank you for the knowledge that you have shared. Take Care & Stay Amazing

Welcome to Taemin! He debuted in 2008 with the band SHINee at the tender age of 14, but have also had a separate solo career for 9 years. As for the question about his dancing, he’s often considered the best dancer of the entire industry, and if not the best, then at least top 3 along Kai and Ten who happen to be his labelmates. He’s an expert in popping and locking and have some INSANE muscle control. You just gotta watch live stages and dance practises to see it all. His solo stuff definetly have a more sexy side than Shinee’s stuff are, but it’s also less sexy and more to the sultry, eerie, fluid sexuality and breaking gender stereotypes with a catholic guilt and trauma from debuting at 14 touch over it all-way. Another common theme in his songs and mvs are a toxic relationship vibe, again usually relating to how being in the public eye since 14 mentally fucked him up for life in some ways. It’s great 😀👍🏻 (no fr it is great stuff) For some other songs of his: Criminal is my favourite song of his, IDEA is a part 2 to Criminal, Want is my favourite mv and Move is his most famous song. All have dance practises as well which I HIGHLY recommend to check out to see his dancing full force.

Finding your channel at 5/6 am was the best thing that could've happen! I love how you clearly analysed Guilty in a vocal aspect as most reactors tended to just talk about the visual aspect of the MV. While of course the MV is very interesting enough to talk about it, same for the choreography, his vocals weren't talked enough for me! So thank you so much for analysing the music aspect, his voice which he found after years and years and years of practices. When he debuted he was just a dancer and was barely there in SHINee's tracks. His dedication towards music made him work hard every day and night to be able to sing amazingly and like no one else in this industry. Btw I also wanted to add he is a skilled pianist! Taemin has a lot of talents and it's a real treat to follow his journey as an artist. He is one of the kpop idol mentioned the most as role model by a full generation of kpop idols for good reasons.

💎 What can we say other than THE KING IS BACK!? I absolutely love how deep Taemin’s songs and MVs are…they aren’t just entertainment or for clicks/views, but he tells a story. He wants to make people THINK and question and reflect. This isn’t something one can watch and then move on. His concepts are intellectual and personal. 💎 Regarding the song itself, his haunting whispers with the beautiful runs on top give me chills…the rap section was unexpected, but fit perfectly and suited the song more than I’d have imagined. I loved how the song switched gears in unexpected ways…there are certain formulas that most kpop songs follow, but this moved in ways I’d never imagined it would and it’s perfect. 💎 As far as the choreography…holy freaking moly. I KNEW it would blow my mind…of course it would-it’s Taemin! With that said, I can’t help but wonder if this isn’t some of his best work to date. It’s provocative without being slutty. Not only that, but you can SEE him being jerked around without any hands on him at all. Around the tenth time watching the video, I happened to notice some of what the background dancers were doing (it’s hard to peel my eyes from Taemin!). There are some genius moves that add to the overall look of the stage…some possibly inspired by breakdancing and some quite acrobatic. I can’t wait to see how it plays out on stage! 💎 All I can really say besides the King has returned is, if loving Taemin is a crime, I’m “G-U-I-L-T-Y … Who's gonna punish me?” 💎 Some info on our KING: Taemin became a trainee under SM at age 11 as a self-taught dancer. He was one of three selected out of thousands the day he auditioned, but he caught their eye with his pop-locking skills, the fact he crossed the line when he wasn’t supposed to (on purpose), and his cheekiness. Though he didn’t feel ready, he debuted with SHINee as the maknae (youngest member) and main dancer at age 14. Though he didn’t get any vocal lines at first (many stated he was tone-deaf, but he was going through puberty), Taemin worked his butt off to improve-so much so he was getting frequent nosebleeds and passed out a few times. His hyungs (basically a term for older “brothers”/close males) helped him develop his voice, especially Onew (Leader of SHINee and also helped coach SM trainees) and Jonghyun (widely regarded as the best vocalist of KPOP), to the point he was the first SM idol to go solo whilst active in his group (2014, at 21 years old). He’s now known for being an exceptional vocalist and is a main vocalist for SHINee and SuperM. In 2014, Taemin had his solo debut (the first artist to ever do so while also active in a group) as the ACE of SM Entertainment (the best of the best in all areas)-Ace is the name of his first solo album and he was the first to receive that title. Now he has gained even more titles: he is the Idols’ Idol (most idols today will say the reason they became an idol and the person they most look up to/aspire to be is Taemin and/or SHINee), he is also a Prince of KPOP (which is a title granted to SHINee), Golden Maknae of SM that’s talented in all areas (besides the fact everyone loves him-not only is he talented, but he’s a wonderful human), Legendary Solo Man (역솔남-near as I can tell, it’s a title bestowed on those similar to “Diva”, given to artists such as Aretha, Dolly, Cher, etc), 탬또롤 (Taemddorol, meaning 'Taemin, once again, a role model'), and the Michael Jackson of South Korea (he’s also known as one of the best dancers in South Korea, if not the best). His backup dance teams are the best in the business and are comprised of multiple famous choreographers (with that said, it’s still difficult (if not impossible) to see anyone BUT Taemin when he’s dancing). It’s no surprise that he’s very well-respected amongst choreographers: his friend (infamous choreographer) Koharu Sugawara nicknamed him “Dancer Killer”. In 2019, SM collaborated with Capitol Records, USA, and assembled a group of seven of the best artists in KPOP to debut in the USA: SuperM. In fact, they even collaborated with Marvel after having been dubbed the Avengers of KPOP. Of course, Taemin was the first chosen and helped pick the other six members. Though not the eldest member, he is the senior member of the group due to the length of time he’s been in the industry. As such, he would have been leader, but he deferred that task to Baekhyun of the group EXO (who’s slightly older than Taemin). Taemin has been the maknae of SHINee his entire career and didn’t feel he would be best suited to lead the others. However, he is the center of the group and they ALL (including Baekhyun) defer to his experience and take his advice to heart. He is very caring towards his dongsaengs (juniors) and was nicknamed Taemresa (inspired by Mother Teresa). Baekhyun is an incredible leader, by the way…don’t want anyone to misunderstand my intentions behind what I’ve said. With the debut in SuperM, Taemin became the first idol to ever debut in three generations: 2nd with SHINee, 3rd as a solo artist, and 4th Gen with SuperM. The second (and only other) artist to achieve this did so almost two years ago, Taeyeon of Girls Generation. (Continued in the reply to this comment…)

Taemin recently discharged from his mandatory military service 04 Apr 2023. Taemin is one of the most active members on SNS: he messages on Bubble (text, pix, and voice…including him playing piano and singing to us), frequently goes live on IG, posts pics, and resumed his unofficial job of SHINee’s Spoiler Fairy. He’s also the member who mostly treats his fans like we’re in a parasocial relationship-acting and talking as though we’re his significant other. Taeminnie calls his fans Jjakgoongs (a name meaning best friends/buddies/partners) and Taemints (Taemints being the name of his Shawol fans, based on the fact SHINee was a total secret and not marketed at all before their debut so Taemin would hand out mints and candies to tempt people to listen to their music and attend their debut-which not even their families were aware they were debuting until they were on stage in front of them). Another important thing to know regarding Taemin has to do with his beloved hyung, Jonghyun, whom we tragically lost in 2017. Jonghyun was Taemin’s biggest fan and supporter, even rescheduling his own concert to attend Taemin’s. They were inseparable. Considering SHINee was back on the stage less than two months after his passing, the group did not have very long to grieve. (They returned after much consideration and at the behest of Jjong’s mom and sister.) Taemin is a well-known workaholic…he never takes breaks and hasn’t since he was a child. He’s in the studio every single day-not even taking off for Christmas. In fact, he went live on the day of his military discharge from the practice room and was renting dance studios while he was enlisted because he HAS to dance…it’s part of him. His jump from nonstop working and perfecting his abilities into military life, plus dealing with depression and anxiety, truly hit him hard. Thankfully, he appears to be doing much better now. He looks and sounds happy and healthy, which is honestly all I could ever hope for. Taemin and SHINee are all fluent in Japanese and release just as many Japanese albums as Korean. They are so popular in Japan, many do not consider them foreign artists (which is testament to the love and respect the Japanese people have for them). They even have an entirely separate crew of dancers and staff in Japan. Most artists have to request to hold concerts at Tokyo Dome (it’s an unspoken rule you need to be able to sell out the 55,000-seat arena to perform), but they actually reach out and request SHINee and Taemin because they know they’ll sell out in seconds (whether as a group or Taemin as a solo artist) and have to host multiple days to accommodate. The guys host the entire concert in Japanese and do not need translators. I mentioned SHINee being trendsetters-that includes Taemin, of course. Besides introducing new music styles and breaking boundaries with his concepts, he has also worked to break other boundaries, as well. Early in his career, SM took advantage of his prettiness and exaggerated it-he was often mistaken as a female (especially during the long-hair era) and would frequently clear his throat to “discreetly” let others know he’s male. He absolutely hated it, and understandably so-he was a teenager. Later, he embraced some of the socially-viewed “feminine” qualities and has worked hard to showcase that music has no gender. Taemin made waves with his song, “Move”, which he performs with his Girl Gang (all-female backup dancers). The choreography blends masculine and feminine energy like no one but Taemin can do (so many tried to imitate it, it was dubbed “Move Disease”, but none come close). He also lends that androgynous aspect to his fashion choices. Taemin has many facets to him-when the camera is on (filming MVs, music shows, etc), he is a true professional. With his SHINee hyungs, he’s a mischievous crackhead who lives to torment them. They raised him, so they spoil him, but don’t misunderstand-his love for them is unmatched and it goes both ways. With SuperM, he’s silly, but caring-he took them under his wings and is their mentor. He also has his Padding Squad (friend group consisting of Kai from EXO, Jimin from BTS, Ravi from VIXX, Timoteo of HotShot, WannaOne/HotShot’s Sungwoon, and a non-celebrity friend). They’re named the Padding Squad, or Padding Friends, because Taemin bought and designed matching customized jackets with their own unique logo. For me, personally, I can appreciate someone’s musical abilities…but to become a true fan (or “stan”), they have to be really special and have qualities setting them apart besides simple talent. Taemin, SHINee as a group, and the other SHINee members as soloists have my utmost devotion (they’re all five incredible soloists-in fact, SHINee is the ONLY group in which ALL members have hit #1 on the Worldwide iTunes Chart as soloists). They’re incredibly talented in ways far beyond musical abilities and are kind, fun, and caring humans. TAEMIN’S BACK!!! SHINee’s BACK!!!

He recently did a singing performance show called Lee Mujin service (it's an amazing watch and a series you would probably enjoy in general, a lot of kpop artists go on and show different colours of their voice whilst being interviewed by Lee Mujin a well known singer). On the show he explained how he did not begin as a singer but studied and trained with a vocal coach after debut for many years and now his voice is so strong and stable. He's a bit of a legend in the kpop scene, he's a heck of a performer and this song is so good.

I'm here for the first time because I love to see genuine reactions to Taemin and his talents instead of all these people obsessing over his looks only. You should check out his song Advice. That's a good one too and I really love it. Or Heaven. Or Sayonara Hitori. He has so many good songs. Now that I'm here I'll definitely stay and watch some of your Dimash reactions too.

I love your in-depth vocal analysis! It’s probably already been recommended but I would love to get your analysis of Taemin’s Killing Voice episode where he sings short snippets of his dance and ballad songs. He said his voice wasn’t in the best condition when he had to record that episode but I’d like to get a professional’s opinion on how he did. He’s also a part of a group called Shinee and his bandmate Onew sang opera at one of their concerts and it would be amazing to get your reaction to how he did!

Peter, I was so thrilled to see you were analyzing Taemin! Immediately clicked on it! I have watched many of your videos before (Home free, Pentatonix, dimash, you yourself and others) so I knew you would give a professional, educated review based on the Voice. I was not disappointed. Thank you. My recommendation for Taemin is Black Rose. Oh, and a couple of other 5HINee member songs: Onew’s ‘Circle’ and Jonghyun’s ‘Y si fuera Ella’

Taemin is absolutely amazing, been in the kpop scene for like 15 years, since he was 14, with his group SHINee. I highly recommend their work, theyre known as "Princes of Kpop." One of their members, Onew, actually did a cover of "Nessun Dorma" on one of their earlier tours, itd be fun to see your reaction for someone who isn't trained for opera. Onew has such a unique voice in the kpop scene, no one sounds like him haha.

My first time seeing one of your videos and I loved it. After a lifetime as a rock fan, I recently branched out and fell in love with KPop, mostly due to Stray Kids (hopefully you can cover them). I've also become a fan of Taemin, and am fascinated by his dancing and vocals. I've become addicted to "Guilty" but your analysis opens up a whole new dimension of appreciation and understanding. I know what I like but always wonder why and your technical analysis really helps. I am really looking forward to watching more of your videos!

I am certain others mentioned SHINee at this point, the group that Taemin is a part of. They are all incredible artists and vocalists, I would love for you to check them out individually or as group. They have one of the largest discographies in kpop, so narrowing down recommendations is not exactly easy (I am sorry other Shawols) but I will stick to 1 recommendation per member and 1 for the group: SHINee (This was very hard for me to pick, but I wanted a song that highlighted all 5 of their vocals, was between this choice and my personal favorite "View)- Tell Me What To Do Onew (The leader of the group, and an absolutely stellar vocalist)- O (Circle) Jonghyun (Main Vocalist of SHINee and considered to be one of the greatest vocalists in Kpop)- Y si fuera Ella (live performance) or Shinin' (If you want a music video) Key (Lead Rapper of Shinee, but the man has serious vocal chops, and charisma out the a**)- Hate That... ft Taeyeon (another incredible vocalist who just dropped her latest album today as I am writing this) Minho (Main Rapper- Deeply underappreciated for his rich baritone, something that tends to be undervalued in Kpop)- Heartbreak Taemin (Main Dancer- fun fact, he was considered to be tone deaf when he debuted with SHINee. He has come an incredibly long way)- Criminal

I really love your reaction, it's very rare case to hear on Taemin's work from a professional singer point to appreciate his singing skills and production which is always a top-notch when it comes to Taemin. He is an embodiment of ART and concepts, his MVs are always so complex and layered, needless to say he is once-in-generation dancer, his fluidity and sharpness makes many professional dancers blush 🤣I would love if you do another videos on Taemin or SHINee along with music director or video editor, and promise to watch regardless the length of video, take your time, guys !

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. Good song. On 1st listen I felt strongly like crying. The tears were held in though the whole song though. But at the end i had to wipe my eyes. I just want to hug Taemin. On my 2nd listen i read the lyrics. And after i wondered was my reaction all in my head. There are layers here upon layers. Loved the fits and makeup. Some of the subject matter was an issue for me. I know Taemin had lots of mental health issues in the military. Based on the teasers I thought he would talk about it. And it looks like he does in his own way. I really want to hear his views on this song and album. I watched Suchwita ep. w. Taemin right after this. Glad he is back giving us headaches, lol. Perfect vocals in my opinion. The feathered headband is a Native American thing for me. I feel it has an important significance. The lyrics had nothing to do with the images in the MV. I think this is way over my head and i will watch some reactions to see what others think of Taemin's msg here. Feels based on imagery. Great choreo. Need the dance practice ASAP. =0p I suggest looking at Advice, Criminal, Move, Want, etc. Many have said Taemin's vocals have improved with his 2 yr military break. Borahae. -NY USA 2019 Army💟 Loved that long skirt. He looked so good, dang. I also was getting examination. After a few reactions i am thinking he is showing military and psych mental health area. Like a mix of places. I was thinking were ppl saying he was guilty of making them feel attracted to him? Does he feel guilty about something? Lots of thoughts going through my head. I am so glad u watched the teasers. The more i watch the more i think that he is combining the military facility with a mental health facility. And we know he suffered in the military and asked for a transfer. So it seems he is portraying his struggles here. @ireneserrano4570 said on 10/30/23 I'm still confused about the exact meaning, but again, there could be different interpretations as with his other songs. But from the visuals i get the feeling it refers to abuse, it can be at so many levels. It can have psychological and physical or both, you can suffer it under your own family, friends, at school, at work, in love relationships... Then who is the perpetrator? many times you can be trapped by those people, even in a group or the society, you don't even realise but by the time you realise you have been actually abused THEY are gone, who can you blame exactly? I have gone through my own dose of abuse, and after years you realise but you end up blaming yourself too, as if you hadn't known better but then you allowed it...😢 Also the images of classroom and rooms with beds, and a kid surrounded by a group...Taemin is watching him from the door as if he was watching himself as a kid... also at the end those kids in school uniforms, all spread around, one grabbing the legs of an adult that grabs his leg, bleeding... South Korea also has buIIying as endemic.. at schools (kids also teachers committing suicide as they can't either find understanding or help by their surroundings, on the contrary they are treated as the outcast and weirdos) also at the workplace, in the Military, in university... Their social rules, their stratification and obsession with seniority, comparing their ages, wealth, possessions, their marks, everything... the social pressure on kids and in general on everyone to be better, the most xx the most xx...). The crazy mix of their traditional values and the contrast to the monstruos capitalism that devours all traditional values... traditional collectivism versus wild individualism... @pamela-623 said on 10/30/23 this is an amazing comeback, so artsy so taemin, shawols had lots of interesting theories, my favorite being that this is an interpretation of the struggles in military enlistment, young men being taken, examined and given a gun, i find it so fascinating @princesssunshine79 said on 10/31/23 From what I have picked up here and there, I THINK, don't quote me, the song is about training at an extremely young age in a very exploitive industry, his horrible experience while doing his military service, and his own mental health. Again, I am not positive about any of this. But, for Taemin, it makes a lot of sense. Especially the last two bits because his 2 years away was a nightmare that really messed with his mental health and depression. I hope this helps a wee bit. 😁 @sumim2192 said on 11/1/23 Just a note, In July (I think), Taemin updated his Instagram bio with a famous quote from Hermann Hesse's famous novel Demian “The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.” I think his outfit with the feather hat represents the god Abraxas. @prisonbreakd said on 10/31/23 The way he does dark concepts is so amazing to me. I think if you think about how guilt feels, the video/song represents it perfectly. The way he moves through the corridors and outside, and the choreography feels like he is out of control, and being suffocated by the situation, he is overwhelmed and struggling to understand up from down, invisible and visible hands push him around. You can't help but feel sad or sorry for him, despite him singing that he's done something horrible. And I think it's because, unlike in "Want", he is not proud or embracing it here; his pain, struggle and guilt are obvious. It's haunting. To me, the overall story of the video was that love (and life) is not always cutesy and sweet; it can come with a dark side, conflicting feelings, being intense and too much. You can do things you regret, and it can spin out of control, you can be aware of doing something wrong and not know how to stop, you can want things that are not good for you or someone that you care about. You can hurt people and be aware of what you are doing but not know how to do it better. You can love the wrong people, make mistakes and feel... well, guilty. It's just a very painful side of human experience that we don't like to look at because guilt and shame go together and make us very uneasy. @pandakholin said on 10/31/23 9:55 Yep. Rian, Simeez, Noze and Rozalin. They’ve been Taemin’s backup dancers since Criminal. Also here is Suzy Hong and Kim Haeun. Only the best of the best for Taemin. @lunemaline1338 said on 10/31/23 Taemin has spoken before how he regrets debuting so young in a very exploitative industry, that mixed with how hard his military enlistment period was for his mental health I see this being about him kinda losing his innocence and being thrown into violence. the shot of him looking at one of the dancers that kinda looks like a younger version of him having fun with everyone else to him being in this medical room and being moved like a puppet, forced to hold a gun and being stripped of his individuality by wearing this school uniform. That’s what I love about Taemin’s music and MV’s it starts to make you think and theorize, he’s super creative. @schuylernefcy3466 said on 10/31/23 Other note, It's like Taemin is singing the part of the abuser and dancing the part of the abused and I can't believe how hauntingly beautiful it is. @bea_hae_tae9392 said on 11/3/23 Taemin has talked about the literature that inspired this concept: Erotism: Death and Sensuality by Georges Bataille and Demian by Hermann Hesse. Love that Taemin decided to do things his own way with his own colors. I don't see anyone else doing this concept, or even the way in which he does it. Just stunning! Great reaction, thanks for giving so much love to his work.

19:28 most definitely interested. Would be even more grateful if you do one of Taemin's other songs too. (Criminal comes to mind specifically) Dude has a degree in film, so he has a lot of opinions when filming music videos, talks with the directors a lot so that the message he's trying to say really gets to the audience. So, yes PLEASE, I would love to see something like that.
