Jimin is literally not human He did contemporary, hip hop, popping, kendo (9 years), he has a black belt in Taekwondo and soccer! I think that’s why his movements are unique, I don’t even know how to describe him!

That was self choreographed by Jimin himself, that's why he was rehearsing those beforehand before doing the final take. As you said, the way he goes from very fluid movements to very sharp and then back to those sharp moves, it's really mesmerizing to watch him dance

jimin's dance teacher during his school days actually begged him to stay continue doing contemporary dance instead of becoming an idol because his teacher realized jimin had huge potential to make a career out of his talent, which u seemed to notice too. ALSO jimin was actually really well known in his school because he got admitted to busan prestigious art school as a valedictorian / top student and the people there said that its actually really difficult and rare for a student from dance department to achieve such accomplishment. he said he did contemporary dance for two years and for me thats not a long experience yet hes already this amazing. btw i love your reaction so much! thank u for sharing ur great videos

I think that Jimin's years of self-defense training (can't remember what style?) has impacted his dancing. He has that contained energy I've seen in martial arts practitioners (my brother for one) where they can move very fast and stop on a blink.

Black belt in Taekwondo, 8 years of Kendo, and other random martial arts training he picked up along the way. Some training at a dance academy and he was the top student at his hometown arts high school (supposedly in his first year, he was senior status in modern dance). When he got signed as a trainee for Big Hit (label/agency), he moved to Seoul and went to the arts high school there while being a trainee (he was 16 at the time I think). BTS officially debuted in 2013 when he was 17 years old. Can you imagine the discipline and perfectionism he developed/learned from both dance and martial arts lol.

I'm not a dancer or a dance expert, but what I find most interesting about Jimin is that he only learned contemporary dance for about 2 years, which is not a long time at all, yet he seemed to have retained the basics and incorporated them into his dancing... It's interesting because BTS dance is mostly modern hiphop influenced. I know as a child, Jimin mostly did hip-hop before switching to contemporary for a brief time... And he said it was hard to switch back (understandable, considering he had a 6 months training period before debuting in an idol group, it means he barely had time to adjust). As people may have pointed out in much more detail, Jimin also did martial arts and particularly kendo for around 7-8 years, he won multiple kendo competitions, even was offered a scholarship abroad (that he didn't take). It's funny that his main extracurricular activity was related to swordsmanship rather than dance... Because martial arts have a strong philosophical/ideological component... I guess, what I'm trying to say is that: I wonder if he picked different techniques or movements from different disciplines and combines them, consciously or subconsciously. Maybe that's what shaped him as a dancer, not one style or discipline but inspiration from multiple areas.

  • @marinal.

The parts you thought could be freestyle actually are choreographed. There’s a longer footage of the whole behind the scenes where if you also read the translated subtitles you see he’s just marking half heartedly for the crew to get the lighting right, the right amount of smoke etc etc etc. There’s a point where the director says ok this is a go were filming and Jimin immediately ups it. So the free styling was keeping warm, letting the set crew test lighting to see how it looks on his body, adjust, the camera and director to get some first shots to see how it looks and make adjustments. If you watch black swan music video the different parts are all in the video and also in performances of black swan the “freestyled” parts are again repeated over and over. Its just his keep warm while the director gets satisfied for lighting and angles looks like other peoples free styling 🤣. Interesting info too is the filming day, he had 2 costume changes, but also his part they filmed was it 2 days straight, 16 hour days. So he cant dance full on for the crew adjustments he’d be dead, so he marks the movements and it can be misunderstood as free styling or not good dancing, but reality is he works insanely hard. At the end of that video he reviews the footage, the director likes it but jimin says i want to do it one more time i can do better, director says i thought you’d say that. (He does this every video) The last take was better again. Apparently jimin does his best when he’s exhausted. I like listening to dancers commentary like this type of video because it gives me better appreciation for what I’m watching. For example i didn't realize Jimin was not turning his head and as such makes the turns harder. An interesting thing you’d be surprised to know is Jimin tends to be unsteady on his feet. He’s mentioned it before. He often falls off the chair he’s sitting on, which army LOVES its hilarious, but he’ll also feel wobbly etc normally. Its like he’s constantly in a state of movement in is equilibrium and he’s adjusted for life by learning to direct himself constantly in a way normal people don't experience or worry about.

[Cr. to Abbiea123] - Jimin at age 11-12 started studying, performing, & competing (winning every competition) in hip hop, popping (which he excelled) & street dancing attending the renowned Just Dance Academy in Busan where he is from. A dance instructor there even waived the quite high tuition fee for him at one point! - Jimin did this while also going to middle school, where he joined the football team, because he loved sports & is quite athletic. He also excelled in track, basketball, is even good at billiards. - Jimin then started studying & performing contemporary dance as well at the Busan High School of Arts. The media even called Jimin "The rising star of Busan" after seeing him performed at a Busan Festival concert. - Jimin also studied ballet & traditional Korean dance while attending the Busan High School of the Arts, but was still going to Just Dance Academy for hip hop classes during weekends. - Jimin also excelled in academic studies, (especially math & science) always getting perfect scores & was class president for 9 yrs straight! - Jimin had offers to dance overseas but he turned it down because he also wanted to become a singer since the 2nd grade!! So he went to audition for Big Hit Entertainment (the company BTS is signed with), to the dismay of one of his dance instructors who said ("The world of dance was going to lose a great artist!"). - Also even when Jimin was a young boy, after seeing the anime One Piece character Zorro, he wanted to become the greatest swordsman in the world like Zorro!! So he went to his mom and asked to be trained in Martial Arts. - Jimin trained for 8 yrs in Kendo and also has a 'Blackbelt' in Taekwondo. He has also learned Hapkido, Keomdo (Korean form of Kendo) & Chinese martial arts. He even studied martial arts in China after receiving a scholarship (only one in class to receive it). - Jimin has found a way to incorporate all his various dance disciplines as well as all his vast experience in martial arts into his own amazing and outstanding dance style! His extensive martial arts training has given Jimin his phenomenal inner core strength as well as amazing flexibility to enable him to do all those gravity defying dance moves that many dancers aren't able to do!! - Jimin is also known for his mesmerizing spectacular stage presence and has been called "Stage Commander". - He has the ability to be able to convey and internalize all the emotions & feelings that a song is trying to convey through his body and his dance. Just like he does vocally as well!

It's always very fun watching a professional react to jimin's dancing because i feel like dancers can regard it from a different perspective and give their insights that i can also learn from. He's my favourite performer and dancer ever and something i find very astonishing is his dancing style, which is a combination of his martial arts background and his variated dance bg (ballet, contemporary, hip hop, popping etc). Your comments are informative and helpful. Thank you! Your comment about improv as “a way to see how a person’s body moves naturally” really struck me. I’ve seen short clips of Jimin free-styling in dance battles from his pre-BTS days. What is free-styling if not improv? I think he was 14 to 15. Even then his musicality was on full display and he moved differently than other kids, using his entire body to express the music. I can see how contemporary dance suited Jimin so well. Watching Jimin dance in songs like Lie and On, I’m also fascinated by how he seems to focus and channel energy in his body. He seems to have a deep understanding of his body and what it can do. I read another commenter’s observation of Jimin’s proprioception and I think there is definitely something there. Thanks again and I’m looking forward to more videos from you.

Its probably an improv in some parts and choreographed in some other parts, because even in the music video he had to come up with some type of movement as a shadow for Suga's part. Jimin studied contemporary and modern dance so often times in some videos you will see dancing in a contemporary way. On a side note, I really enjoyed your insight and understood a lot more. Thank you for this..

So I’m a liturgical dancer and I have been since I was about 9 or 10. And I went to dance school very briefly for about 6 months, where I studied contemporary, jazz, hip hop and tap. And later on, during high school I became a thespian and everyone knows that theatre always has very dramatic, energetic, choreo… and whenever I learn new dances I always find myself incorporating a little bit of everything into the way I move my body. It’s also pretty cool because once I learn a dance move, I never fully unlearn it and I often find dance moves from years ago resurfacing when I practice my improv. I definitely think Jimin dances very similarly.

@@erickagoss6057 I understand your frustration. Vids from the official big hit labels & bangtantv channels are safe from copyright bc they're available for free anyway. Unlike paid content like extracts of concert dvds which is normal. For live performances, it depends. Mnet (MAMA) & screen recordings from vlive won't let you breathe. As for MMA, it depends. When it wasn't aired on TV, I think it was safe, but when it airs on TV, the TV channel's annoying

I've seen a lot of reactors who had to flip or blur out the bangtan bomb videos to enable posting. I don't think bighit tries to take your whole channel down because of it, but individual videos may get taken down, which would be very disappointing for you and your viewers. And like others have said, other video providers are far more draconian. I'm actually a little surprised that this video managed to stay up. Hurrah! Where they perform Boy Meets Evil leading into Blood Sweat and Tears. Jimin starts off the performance freaking blindfolded and he does a bunch of jumps and turns and lands not only solidly on his feet but also perfectly facing the audience and I personally found it W-I-L-D.

You talking about turning and him not spotting sometimes reminded me of that because he literally turns blind during that dance. When I tell you my jaw hit the floor when I first saw that.

What you commented about Jimin constantly switching from strong/sharp/fast movements to slow/softer/elongated movements is very accurate. Maybe that's what makes his dancing so "flashy" and "eye-catching". It looks exhausting and very demanding for your musculature, to be honest. I know ballet is super difficult and requires to put your body to the limit, so maybe for you it's not unusual idk. I do believe the apparent dichotomy or contrasts in his style is largely why people are fascinated by Jimin's dancing. He also has great facial expressions, although I know for a fact that was something he worked really hard to master (expressions was what their choreographer used to reprimand him for the most.) In one hand, both his voice and his dance have a certain androgenous quality, at least I think so. It's in the sensitivity, the elegance, and maybe partially an illusion due to his features and body type? Maybe he looks more "cute" or "fragile" or "feminine", sometimes, because his body is slender and seems small/compact, while his face is softer/rounder? Is this a thing, the audience projecting qualities into how people look like?... And then, in contrast, he shows a lot of physical strength and this feeling of "going all out" (he just often dances as if he's putting extra energy on several steps, like jumping higher than necessary, throwing his neck around, falling to the floor with abandon, popping in a sharp manner, etc).
