Product Testing! Seafoam VS Rislone VS CRC VS Berryman do they work? Can they fix a P0420?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Product review videos aren't what we normally do but in this case we've got a P0420 Catalyst Efficiency code repeatedly popping up on the Pontiac Vibe GT and figured this would be a good chance to test some "over the counter" products! So let's do some scientific testing shall we?
Product number 1, the classic Seafoam. Product number 2, Rislone Fuel, Exhaust & Emission system cleaner, Product number 3, CRC Guaranteed to pass Emissions System Cleaner, Product 4 Berryman B12. These 4 are all products sold over the counter at just about any auto parts store and are purported to "fix" or at least temporarily improve the issue we are currently having.
Just before the making of this video we HAVE installed a brand new FlowMaster 2.5inch high flow catalytic converter, running the factory original rear o2 sensor in the factory location on factory pipe.

I would replace the rear O2 sensor. I've yet to break one removing it using a proper 6 point O2 sensor socket. I love my inductive heater which has yet to fail me getting a nut / bolt out. Spent $420 for mine but it was the best money I've spent on a tool and I swear less now. 8-) Easy Peasy.

I own a 02 Camry XLE V6 they are a Finicky little 👿 and engine light has been doing the same thing I have used catclean which is supppossed 🤣to be the best I might as well peed in the gas tank and I replaced O2 sensors with Denso Brand Still ON , I Took it to Mechanic he's baffled and he also checked the temperature of the Cat's it runs like a Scalded Dog next thing I might try is a Smoke Test because after reading About my Precious little Baby if Toyota especially detects a exhaust leak it sets off the Code, I have even tried the cheaters that you screw in where the 02 sensor goes didn't work, Ohh Yeah remember I said Finicky when the light is on No Stability Control or Traction Control. Good luck 🤞 on the Vibe can't wait to see the Outcome 👍

I had the same problem, I just replaced all my o2 sensors and the code popped back on so I removed them all and sprayed them with throttle body cleaner and also sprayed a whole can in the hole where the o2. Sensors goes and turned it on for a few seconds, installed them back and it ran really great and no more 0420 code.Try spraying throttle body cleaner inside the Cat and make sure to use the little red straw on the can so you can reach inside and spray a whole can, then do the same on the other side my friends.

@@juliawei8990lots of mechanics know how to do this. Carburetor cleaner and/or brake cleaner will also work. If you use brake cleaner just make sure it's the one without chlorine. We use carburetor cleaner followed by brake cleaner without chlorine when we did it. We left the engine running and sprayed it through the hole where the O2 sensor goes before the catalytic converter. If you have a O2 sensor that is not working, you can't simply clean it as the sensor is not doing anything. I always tell people I recommend cleaning the catalytic converter in this way before you replace the O2 sensors, that way you don't dirty up the brand new O2 sensor. After you spray a can of carburetor cleaner through the top hole (closest to engine, in front of the catalytic converter) while the engine is running, when you are done, then replace the O2 sensors. This will almost guaranteed fix your problem each time. This saves you about $800 by not having to replace your catalytic converter. If this doesn't work, you can then remove the front O2 sensor again (The one closest to the engine before the catalytic converter), poor about a quarter of a cup of Dawn ultra soap down your garden hose, stick the garden hose up your tailpipe as far as it will go, then take a washcloth or old shirt and jam it around the garden hose where it enters the tailpipe to form somewhat of a seal. Turn the garden hose on a little, and watch the hole where the O2 sensor was before the catalytic converter. When water starts coming out of this hole, immediately turn off the water hose. Let that water sit in the exhaust system for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will break down all the nasty stuff in your catalytic converter. Then remove the hose and rag/shirt. Allow the water to drain out for about 10 minutes before starting the vehicle. Do not put the O2 sensor back in that hole, until you start the vehicle first and run it for about another 10 minutes. This ensures that there's not too much back pressure on the exhaust system. Then replace the O2 sensor, and you should be good. You might have to possibly run another can of carburetor cleaner/brake cleaner (without chlorine) through the catalytic converter again.

I have used Lucas oil fuel treatment mostly over the years just for maintenance. Absolutely no injector, fuel or catalytic converter issues on several cars I ran to almost 300,000 miles. Recently, I tried the Seafoam (it was cheaper) and it works pretty good. The one where I felt worked the best was Royal Purple Max Clean Fuel System Cleaner. I bought my Ex a car so she could take our son to school then therapy after and took her old beater to drive. That car had horrible mileage and a miss, it was clear she hadn't done maintenance on it for a while. I added that Seafoam, no change. Then I tried the Lucas Oil, no change. I tried the Royal Purple Max Clean Fuel System Cleaner and the miss cleared up quickly and the mileage improved. I now add a can of it to the tank about every two months and it works really well. *** My doors leak yours do so I can't wait for the video of how you fix it! ***

I just cleared mine and passed smog in CA 2008 mazda 3 170k... i first ran seafoam high mileage in gas and oil combined with full bottle of seafoam injector cleaner.. i ran out half the tank then bought 2 bottles of cataclean, i hooked up one bottle of cataclean like an iv and fed it right into the throttle body.. i reved the car for about a minute bouncing off the rev limiter a few times.. after half a bottle of cataclean through induction the car was cranking out thick wite smoke and dripping black condensation from the muffler. I shut off the car poured 1/4th of the cataclean straight into the air/fuel bypass chamber, closed up the intake. I cleared all the codes missfire, and p0420 p0421... after driving normal for 200 miles it was ready to smog and it passed.. the car is running like new. Lets see how long it last.. while i was at it i replaced the air filter and cleaned mass air flow sensor and throttle body then did an oil change

Guaranteed to pass only works temporarily. That’s why they say to take the test when it gets down to eighth of tank. I believe the issue you’re having is an exhaust leak before the sensors or it’s the cat itself. I know it was replaced but if it’s a universal you might as well just replace it with a glasspack or cherry bomb. Factory cat is what you’ll need. Try using a spacer between cat and sensor. Check live data to see performance of sensors but it seems from video the sensors are working. Also remove egr valve and check small passages could be clogged.

I've had the best results with the CRC product. I run it down and then add super unleaded and monitor the test results on my code reader. In Texas I can have one incomplete code and still pass inspection, and the CRC buys me enough miles/time to keep the check engine light off. I have left the test center several times and the check engine light comes on right after I passed inspection.

No, I do not, this thing dyno's at 425hp so I'm not worried about that, do I think an O2 sensor is bad? most likely, but I was really hoping one of these products would actually do what they say they could do. But since I worked auto parts as a kid and through college I know that most of the time these products are just a gimmick however they do successfully do a tiny bit of good. You made a believable video that was fun to watch, thanks!

Since you tested the O2 sensors, I'd put my money on the high flow cats not doing what they're supposed to. To the best of my knowledge the O2 sensors after the cats are monitoring that the cats are doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing. I've seen plenty of 'High Flow' cats that don't actually do a dang thing to convert the exhaust to pass emission tests, so those rear o2 sensors will most definitely always trip a code. If you don't care about the emissions since you know your cats are new and not clogged you could always take the rear O2 sensors out but leave them plugged in. Tie them off under the vehicle (somewhere safe) and plug the O2 sensor hole and call it a day. But remember that those sensors are there to let you know when the cats are performing poorly. They could always get clogged up and you would never know until your engine starts bogging. Again, my bets on the high flow cats not doing a dang thing to convert that exhaust. May want to invest in higher quality high flow cats.

  • @oikkuoek

When resetting the ECU "manually" i.e unplugging the battery, both of the O2 sensors need to be taken out from their holes and cleaned. When the power is switched back on, the cleaned O2 sensors need fresh air for the base line reading. Let the ECU run it's initial cycle, but DO NOT START THE CAR. Then turn the key off, screw the O2 sensors back on without unplugging them (that's the tricky bit) and start the car. I've done this succesfully several times without ever having a scanner/computer to clear the codes. On the Vibe's case, I'd argue that the after market cat is not efficient enough, or there's a small pin hole before the O2 sensors that mixes the exhaust gas with oxygen richening up the initial A/F mix.

  • @oikkuoek

    @oikkuoek

    9 ай бұрын

@@ezwa9979 Old exhaust manifolds/pipes become pitted with corrosion pin holes. When the exhaust pulse travels past these tiny holes, the pulse sucks air through the holes. When these pin holes occur before the O2 sensor, the extra air gives false reading on the O2 content in the exhaust gas, so the ECU adds more fuel thinking the AFR is lean. Same thing happens when the O2 sensor is not calibrated correctly. If the sensor at it's calibration phase is sitting inside a fuel soaked exhaust pipe, it thinks the fuel saturation is normal. So it feeds extra fuel into the system trying to keep the pipe saturated. The sensor(s) send a voltage value, which then is read by the ECU and interpreted by the values installed in the memory. These memory banks can self clear if the battery voltage drops too low, or battery is disconnected long enough to drain the capacitors on the ECU motherboard. At this stage the ECU automatically goes through the start-up sequence including sensor calibration when plugged back on.

Ended up rebuilding the bottom half (crank) , the top half I rebuilt just before it came to resting for 8 years. Would the carb cleared after using gas only? Well, after 2 tank full and sputtering and stalls it didn't so I threw the hail mary ball of gas additive witchcraft for the hell of it and lo and behold. After 1 tank it was noticeably better by 50% and after the 3rd tank it was purring (well, as purring as a thumper purrs that is).

Great demonstration and video however, the only flaw is you should have run at least another half a tank of gas through it clean without any additives before you added the next one, otherwise you potentially are just mixing them which could either cancel or provide better resultswithout accuracy. Another thing that I noticed is, I do know for a fact, a couple of the products you used are technically not equipped to deal with the added ethanol that is put in the gasoline today. Therefore, the ethanol potentially reduces results or eliminates results because the product is not formulated to deal with gasoline and corn alcohol.
