In the game, the leitmotif from this song can be heard subtly in many songs and moments leading up to this, but the full song first plays at the culmination of the conflict central to this portion of the game. It takes the place of where normally a powerful high energy swelling combat theme would play, because now you fully understand the tragedy of what has occurred, of who you must fight, and what must be ended. Up until this chapter of the game, you didn't know very much about dragons other than a supposed god of dragons caused the greatest calamity known to modern men, and that the progenitor of all known dragons has for some reason taken an interest in observing you. And here we are drawn into a thousand year war between man and dragon, only to find that in the storied history of mankind's conflict with dragonkind, it was a kingdom of men who first trampled upon peace. It appears you are fighting a vicious dragon who has been attempting to exterminate mankind out of territorial aggression, but now you know you are mercy-killing a mourning brother who cannot let go of their grief.

Sang by Susan Calloway, composed by Nobuo Uematsu arranged by Tsutomu Narita. Nobuo a self taught musician composing for video games since 1985 and I'm always impressed by how he can write classical stuff like this when he started composing on chiptune.

So spoilers time. Context is actually important to this song. Dragons in FF14 are weird. They are for one aliens, no really. Also they are immortal and have a very weird perception of time. Something that happened eons ago may as well have happened yesterday. They are also asexual, capable of have children on their own, but still split in pair. The instrumental version of the song is heard through out the expansion. As we progress we learn about the dread wyrm Nidhogg and his unending hated for humanity. As the story progress we do learn more and even face and "kill" Nidhogg. What we don't understand at this point is that for a dragon their body is just a vessel for their power. The dragon is POWER, and while it's eyes still exist that power is not going anywhere and the dragon can and will come back. So he hijack the body of one of our friends and here we go toward the final battle with Nidhogg and his Horde. But that is not all that's happening, we also get that good lore. We meet Hraesvelgr, Nidhoggs brother, and supposed ally of humanity (he was in love with a human woman, but ended up devouring her per her request so her soul can stay with him pass death). He basically tells us that he will not help us and that Nidhogg has the right to hate and fight humanity for what was done to him. The dragons and humans lived in peace, only for the humans to betray and slay Hraesvelgr’s and Nidhogg's sister and devour her body and eyes to gain the power of a dragon. He refuses to help humanity and we learn that he gave one of his eyes to Nidhogg to help him. What follows involves corrupt elf pope trying to become a god and a separate character convincing Hraesvelgr to help us stop the crazy old man. This leads to the return of Nidhogg. Hraesvelgr finally accepts that his brother is insane and can't be saved and while his reasons are technically correct all he does is to spread blind suffering in the world. And so we arrive to face Nidhogg at his full power carried on Hraesvelgr’s back. We arrive and the plot twist is that Hraesvelgr willingly shared his power with us so we can defeat Nidhogg. And only then after hundred of hours of play do we hear the lyrics of the Dragonsong. The lyrics that tell us the story from Nidhogg's POV and ask why we, humanity, betray and kill, what we can't possess. It's a great piece of music, but context makes it truly incredible.

Isn’t the song is from Hydaelin POV

@@TheNatix26 That's Answers. In the Heavenward story we are cut off from Hydelin for a long time and while the connection is restored I don't think she sings the Dragonsong. I think it may be Saint Shiva singing it, because while the song is from Nidhogg's POV, it's also connected and can be seen as talking about to her love and sacrifice to bring on the peace between man and dragon, only for man to betray it.

@@trifontrifonov4297 I always thought the song was actually from the perspective of Midgardsormr, who even while slumbering always kept an "eye" on all of his children. It's a lament not just for the trust that was broken and the loss of both his daughter Ratatoskr and his daughter-in-law Shiva, but also for the grief of his sons Nidhogg and Hraesvelgr. There's also the possibility that the last three verses have a double meaning - which wouldn't be the first time that's happened in FF14 - and that everything from the lines "Swelling overlong, Seas of blood are a song" also refers in part to the fate of Tiamat and Bahamut. Admittedly it might be a stretch, but there are parts about that section that could refer to the Allags as well.

This friggin song destroyed me, both for the end credits of heavenswards msq as well as the dragonsong war conclusion post HW patch content, i still contend to this day that the hardest part of the final battle against Nidhogg isnt nidhog himself but rather trying to play through the tears
