Procreate Dreams VS Toonsquid Review & Comparison

Фильм және анимация

Around 4:23 I say that Dreams doesn't have the same onion skin options. As seen in the video Dreams clearly has this. Toonsquid excels by having more specific onion skin editing and out of pegs.

In the part where I compare the onion skin settings I meant Dreams does not have the extended options Toonsquid offers. Toonsquid allows you to control opacity of individual onion skins frames, out of pegs, and the ability to change onion skin to any color. Dreams has onion skinning but it is locked to a range of colors, and the opacity slider controls multiple frames. Also forgot to mention Dreams has no camera while Toonsquid does. Neither have bone tools but Toonsquid is getting some while Dreams has said it is not a priority(if I remember correctly). Please remember Dreams has a full team while Toonsquid is solo developed.

@@Mazapan404 Can’t argue with that. I totally agree. I admit, it’s a “personal” preference. It’s like the entire world is consuming Big Macs, and I’m ordering oatmeal. Very soon, EVERYONE on earth will be using AI art, and I will STILL be crafting out a unique, highly personal drawing style. Again, that’s why I love Procreate Dreams. Because it caters to my extremely personal drawing aesthetics. Those who prefer puppets have a zillion other apps to choose from. Many of them are absolutely FREE! Choose appropriately 👍🏽

Very thorough, thought-out comparison, Savonne - thank you! :) I appreciate the time you took in this. 8:03 - I would mention that ToonSquid has been out longer, but we would do well to remember that unlike Procreate Dream's team dedicated to working on the app full-time, ToonSquid is just one guy who probably has a full-time job to pay the bills. :) Just something to consider. New subscriber - thanks again! :)

Excellent comparison. I have both apps. I found ToonSquid by accident almost immediately after its release. I was so excited while watching tutorials for it, and bought it right away. With its capabilities and price it was a no brainer. It is feature packed. For my use it’s a complete toss up between the two at this point. I do all of my drawing in Procreate anyway, and mostly had to bring it in to other apps to complete my animations. Performance mode, alone, changed my whole world for what I do. Before I would move things around and screen record everything and then edit it in other video editing software (LumaFusion)…very time consuming to say the least. For video with transparency, I edited and exported from LumaFusion. So the fact that Dreams handles compositing/post processing is a huge benefit. I’ll continue to use both apps and keep an eye on the progress of each.

Toonsquid is better! Half the price, 5x as nice!!! Having procreate dreams literally bought a couple weeks before toonsquid, watched hours of tutorials for dreams, and it felt like a over complicated FlipaClip (which is free), I hopped into TS not really needing a tutorial I was able to make a 15s animation in about 10 minutes (which is good) also saving common animations like walk cycles will save tons of time reusing animations. Dreams drawing is nothing like procreate and I honestly prefer procreate animation over dreams just add sound, key frames, symbols, and camera to regular procreate I would pay another $10 for the animation add on. TS being one year old is probably where dreams will probably be in a year, but dreams should of released at TS quality with a huge budget from procreate sales it’s like number 1 on App Store, so having millions of dollars should help

Another amazing thing to keep in mind is that Toonsquid is made by 1 person *ONLY*, while Procreate is an entire team, which is really interesting. However i find it cumbersome to draw in Toonsquid, and Procreate Dreams doesn't win in that department either, which is a VERY HUGE shocker. Toonsquid's Symbol feature is very great and i end up using that feature through importing animation frames made in CSP EX on the iPad. Then, duplicate the symbol to create multiple characters for a specific shot I just got RoughAnimator last night and ive been blown away by the app. I would recommend to check out the settings and scale down the interface, so you have more screen space to animate.

@@sohappyilltry I’m not suggesting that YOU should switch to Dreams. In fact, I heard that ToonSquid works fine for most people, but for me, it lags like crazy, especially when I turn on onionskin - it becomes almost unusable! Even worse, it won’t allow me to convert my projects into movie clips, so I can’t export them into dreams. It just crashes! Also, I just discovered that Dreams allows me to drag my finger across the stage to smoothly animate my scene. I know ToonSquid offers that as well, but I always found it CUMBERSOME. Dreams makes it feel EFFORTLESS!! The bottom line is toonSquid feels like hard tedious labor, and dreams feels more intuitive and JUST PLAIN FUN, (like procreate)!! So, even though dreams is still in beta, I’m having the time of my life! For the very first time, animating within an app is taking me back to my childhood! Feels like I’m animating with paper on a drawing board!!✍🏽

Great review, though you're not entirely right about a lot of Dreams Features. You can actually edit the transparency and colors of the Onion Skin tool by simply tapping the time in the drawing mode and going to "Edit Onion Skin". Also, not sure you know but you can enlarge the drawing mode by swiping down the timeline and drawing with an infinite space essentially above. Thanks for showcasing the differences though! ^_^
