As much as I admire Korea for their advancements in manufacturing in the past 70 years, I cannot say the same about this. Particle board and cheap electronic components do not make up for properly dressed timber and the mechanical parts that go into a proper traditional grandfather clock. My father presented me with his grandfather clock 40 years ago from Germany. It is still working and keeping accurate time after all these years, probably many more than this example would.

Not even sure this qualifies for particle board. Maybe a cardboard / particle board hybrid. My wife would buy off Amazon just like other garbage furniture. Any moisture hits this stuff and wet noodles like cardboard.

I cried when they installed the speaker. What sacrilege. And as others here have mentioned, the MDF....oh man. I at least hope these clocks are priced accordingly. $30.
@elpasadordeoro

sure, they cost more than a mechanical one did 100 years ago, but they cost less than a vintage or a new mechanic today. The final price for this is about 400 dollars, anyway people choose these movements also for the easy usage, you have only to swap the battery 1 time at year and with a mechanical one you have to charge every week, a mechanical sounds always, also in the night (if you don t stop it manually) many people don t like the TICKING, and a mechanical one needs to be serviced every 10/15 years (jn many country this is very expensive) I have both, many old german pendulum clock but also a pair of osawa and seiko quartz operated from 80s, i love both xD
@Corgipon

@@elpasadordeoro you do realize that electric clocks tick too, right? And you can find a cheap mechanical clock online, even if it’s used.
@elpasadordeoro

@@Corgipon Absolutely no!! Or better it depends, a lot of quartz movement are super quiet, seiko an example makes dozens of quiet movements, in my collection i have some models and I can assure you that they don t make any noise except for the melody. I also have a lot of mechanical clocks, but do you know mechanical clocks need service??? i service my old clocks by my self but a watchmaker ask a lot of money for this job. Personally i also have quartz movement with ticking and old electronic/electric clocks from 50/70s super quiet too. The only mechanical clock very quiet that i have in my collection is a german 400 days clock, but honestly they re inaccurate and hard to service, they re perfect for the LOVER, not for normal user :) ps you re talking with a person with more than 50 clocks and 100 watches
@user-tl9bx1wv2z

А за сколько аналогичные по размеру и дизайну часы но изготовленные от души, вы готовы были бы реально заплатить? И не из сосны, а скажем из бука. Про дуб американский (и прочие) я пока не спрашиваю.
@George_Borman

MDF, staples, glues, silicone/caulk, brads, dirty glass and all... what a bargain. Probably cost more in labor than in parts. I was expecting fancy joinery, exotic wood, and a real clock. Guess my expectations were really off on this one. I'm sure we can pick up one of these babies on wish.

This is an educational video on what to look out for when you are shopping for a grandfather clock (or any furniture really). Look for: 1. Particle board construction rather than solid wood, or even veneered plywood. Particle board has to be sealed, otherwise it will absorb moisture. Even if it's sealed, all it takes is a scratch or chip, and it will absorb moisture. Once it absorbs moisture, it behaves like cardboard - it swells and puffs up and will eventually crumble and fall off. 2. Nails and staples. If you see any, avoid. Woodworkers who take pride in their work will hide their joinery as much as they can. Even if they use metal fasteners, they will hide it under a wooden plug. They will 100% not nail a carving through the face. I cringed when I saw that. 3. Fake features. It's a battery powered quartz movement, so what are those chains for? A fake pendulum, and a fake weight that will never need to be rewound. And that chime, I really hate it. They couldn't even bring themselves to use something that sounded like a real chime, instead it's got a distinct 8 bit sound like the bleeps from 1980's computers. 4. Honesty. A grandfather clock is supposed to be a high-end piece of furniture, a statement piece. This thing is pretending to be a high end statement piece which it clearly is not. I am not saying that the manufacturers are dishonest - as long as it is advertised as such and sold for a reasonable price, the manufacturers are being honest. But the person being dishonest is the BUYER who is trying to pass it off as a high end statement piece. This thing might look like a grandfather clock from a few meters away, but once you get up close and touch it and hear the chime, the whole illusion falls apart. It will make people wonder why you put such a monstrosity in your living room and seriously question your taste and honesty. For the same money, buy a nice wall clock.

Dear friends, its so nice to see your video. One thing i would like to mention here, because i am a service techie doing service of panel saws and wood cutting machinery.""" The usage of cotton and woolen gloves is not allowed by most manufacturers""" so avoid usage of cotton and woolen gloves while cutting wood. The fibers from the gloves will attract the cutting blade towards the operators hand.

My father was only one of seven that built grandfather and grandmother clocks by hand until his death, he was also a master repairman. He used to cry literally when he’d have to repair mass produced clocks. Their wood was cheap, and the mechanics even worse. Mass production has literally killed the genuine clock industry

Unfortunately everything is mass-produced now. Everything moves on in this world, including industry. Clocks that were created by hand were one-of-a-kind masterpieces themselves, and now, there’s multiple of one kind thanks to modern mass production with the possibility of blemishes. At least the mass-produced mechanical clocks from companies like Howard Miller are higher quality than these electric ones.

Eh, I beg to differ over this, though I applaud Korea for their advancements in manufacturing of course. An electronic movement in a clock, especially in a grandfather clock, is rather cheap. Clocks made in England, France, Germany, and the like throughout the decades included intricately designed cases and complex mechanical movements that make them works of art themselves and they take a lot of time (no pun intended), effort, and care to make. Mechanical grandfather clocks are even still made today.
