I recently came across a probiotic that is a very short, 6 day course. Over 6 days you get a total of 3 Trillion Bacteria. As someone that has tried countless probiotics to help resolve my stomach issues - I thought it would give it a try. 3 days in - and all bloating, pain and feeling of fullness stopped. Bowels started to move. I was 90% back to normal after a year of pain. A good probiotic might give us 50 billion bacteria - which sounds like a lot - but when you think we have 100 TRILLION in our system, it's like one man fighting a 10,000 army. This ultra high, short course dose sent in 50x the amount that a normal probiotic does. Might be something to think about...

While everyone keeps saying there's no best time to take probiotics, you are the only one to point out that our stomach acid is lowest in the morning, which has helped TREMENDOUSLY since I take mine on empty stomach first thing in the AM before breakfast. That and increasing fiber is gradually stabilizing my gut and less symptoms. Thanks for all you do, even your website is an amazing resource in all matters gut health!

I have IBS SIBO and have been on lactobacillus/bifido probiotics for two months and can see a remarkable improvement in my condition. My bloated and distended stomach has been corrected. I'm working on resistance training to tone my stomach now. Gluten just gives me a bit of fatigue but does not bloat or inflame my colon (externally) anymore. The fatigue means that my body tolerates gluten but still has trouble dealing with it, I think.😢

Lactobacillus species drastically disrupt the small intestinal microbiome, bifidobacteria do not. Info comes straight from MAST research group’s frontman, Mark Pimentel, according to their shotgun sequencing studies. So maybe only taking bifidobacteria might even improve your results.

True, bifido tend to reside more in the colon, lacto in the small intenstine. But I think its an oversimplification to say they 'disrupt' the small intestinal microbiome, especially in a range of patients.@@Ruktiet

@@brianj7027 false. Lactobacillus does not reside at all in the small intestine naturally according to the REIMAGINE study, and, again, appears to drastically disrupt the biome there. In the colon, it appears to be beneficial.

Great video again Dr. Just wondered if you would recommend adding each type of probiotic, say 2 months apart to see if symptoms improve? I’d be reluctant to begin all three together in case they create issues. Or are they unlikely to interfere with each other as they are each different strains?

My observation has been if a reaction is going to occur it will manifest within a few days to a week. Otherwise, the different types/formulas appear to compliment one another. Always check with your doctor first.

I like the term you use 'Vector-Borne Microbes' it does encompass Lyme and co-infections much better. I've started prescribed herbal treatment for 'V-B M' (Lyme & Co) and experienced a Herx. Yes, as you say, the worst of it lasted 5 days, then after that the symptoms improved daily for a further 5 days to where I was over it completely.

Because of many root causes, my methane SIBO is chronic; better but won’t go away. I’m on antimicrobials most of the time ( oregano, berberine. Allicin, Atrantil). Also taking many supplements for leaky gut ( which is helping!) Can I take the 3 probiotics at the same time? And what about taking the probiotics during xifaxin and metronidazole? I just started your book…. Fantastic! As a nurse, I truly appreciate the science based studies and your interpretations.

Which probiotics protocol could help me? I understand some probiotics are high histamine. Currently on clostridium butyricum and resveratrol.

I'm starting with just Saccharomyces boullardii daily for a week, because I have IBS-D (diarrhea). Then I'm going to add on a cheap lacto/bifido blend and have that daily for a week at the same time as the Saccharomyces. Then, continuing with these two, I'll add on the soil based probiotics to the daily blend. After about 2-3 months, if I'm feeling better, I will step it down a notch because the saccharomyces and soil blend are a bit expensive. My plan is to try taking one on one day, then the other on the next (while maintaining the cheap lacto/bifido daily as normal). Then after another 2-3 months i will reevaluate and consider going down to just once a week each of the two expensive tabs perhaps. But I am prepared to possibly have to take these regularly for a long time as my issues are longstanding and I'm on a very varied diet that I'm not willing to restrict further on top of being plant-based.

you might have nerve damage-mediated SIBO, where taking antibiotics restores normal small intestinal flora, but due to lack of migrating motor complex cleanlng waves due to this nerve damage, combined with eating fiber, SIBO returns. The pattern and timeline you mentioned matches up perfectly. You might benefit greatly from a MMC-stimulating prokinetic such as prucalopride 0.5mg at night. Discuss with your doctor first.

My daughter's IBD UC-C pain level went down to 0.5 this week. She only suffered constipation and pain in her rectum this afternoon again, after we thought the constipation issue had been resolved. I kept her on her Ferofol iron prescription because of her heavy periods. I'm thinking that it could be the cause for her constipation now and resultant pain after having a BM. Still on probiotics. Heading towards 4 months end of November! We see her gastrologist on Monday. Worried that she still has pain in her rectum, where her inflammation started. 😮 Glad the pain is less though. Emotional health is excellent now too. Wondering if she still needs to see a counselor. I think the depression and anxiety was bc of the negativity of outcome as we know that IBD suffers have low level quality of life expectations with loads of colon surgeries. The pain level experienced, loss of a social life and strict diet must surely add to the depression. Thanks to your wonderful advice, that expectation is old news.😊
