@GuitarManMilaneus It might have to do with whether your track is tick or sample based. Whether it stretches to follow the tempo changes you've made or not. You don't want it to stretch. Just the tempo to change.

I like to tap tempo on my kaossilator or KP3 to find tempo.... A lot of vsts have this option too, and you can midi map a controller key/button to it for a tactile input. This is a wonderful alternative. I'm sure I'll be using to double check my guesstimations.

If I may chime in, yes you can. You need a stopwatch to do it. Start the stopwatch on a beat, Stop the watch on the 25th beat. Whatever the stopwatch counted to, multiply that by 41.81 and that is your beats per minute.

Has Pro Tools improved this at all? In Ableton you just drag the beat into your session and it figures it out pretty instantly. Very rarely gets it wrong.

Make sure you group the drum tracks together when you make the beat detective slices so everything gets chopped up but only analyze the kick and snare. If your missing what I'm saying you need to play with PT a lot more before going down this road.

It actually is the music standard for recording. I haven't seen any pro studio that doesn't have that software. I use both Sonar and Pro Tools on my PC

general question: means that, that PT stretches all fine human timedifferences to exactly 70 bpm oft the whole songlenght or is the beatdetection-feature is able to search realted transients of quarter notes (like the piano accompaiment) in order to keep that in each bar different microtiming when musicans are not recording to a click? Would whish to had that feature in Reaper for a long time, hahaha)

You need to find the average tempo of the track using idenfify beat function, and use beat detective to chop the drums up into slices so you can lock it to that tempo. Then you can modify tempos and have the drums stay on beat. Get ready to do a lot of editing. Best way is to always record drums to a click.

Pro Tools has Tap Tempo. Undo Conductor Mode, click on the tempo in the transport and tap the letter T to find it. Problem comes when 10 measures down the road the drummer moves tempos and its off again. Best way is to find average, use beat Detective and slice up the drums to the grid.

I need to align a multitrack drum project. It was not recorded with a click or metronome. It was live. I want to align the drums at the recorded temp and then speed it up when session is done. Can you help?

Great Tutorial. Thank you.But what if the audio track was played NOT to a click.Obviously the pro tools click would drift in and out from time to time. I know in cubase you have the option to cut the audio up into M point which can than be quantised to the precise click. Is there a way to quantise the live unregulated tempo of a audio track to a precise click .

If the measures are off by about 1bpm in the middle of the song, how can everything line up to 70bpm so perfectly? Whenever I get tracks not played to a click track, the tempo is all over the place, and there's no way to set a tempo for the whole song.

what if there are many songs of different time signatures & different tempos in one project, what should be done in such a scenario ,what shud be done so that each song retains its click and i dont have to change the tempo of entire project for each song .

+gaurav sharma Hey Guarav, if you are switching time signatures and tempos in Pro Tools, its not too hard. See the top bar where it says Tempo and Meter (upper left, in grey, above the track names)? Click the + button to add a tempo marker or meter marker. This will effectively switch your tempo, or meter. The click will follow as well. Hope this helped!

OK great but if the song you are trying to determine the tempo of was not recorded with a click track, then what do you do. (since the timing won't be consistent). I know you can get an approximation, but anything programmed with MIDI will get off time.

Brandon Doherty you wouldnt because an exact tempo doesnt exists. look into ways to stretch the audio to a click track other wise you cant.

i just use virtual dj to find the tempo. load on a turntable and it gives bpm in seconds and then dial it in pro tools. works every time.

Why doesn't Logic Pro X have this function? I need to get a tempo to 4 decimal places and the rubbish BPM Counter in Logic only goes to 1. Very frustrating. Good vid btw

Pro Tools is not the music industry standard - it is the film industry standard, and we don't generally need bpms when we are cutting sound fx ;)

You call this really easy. I would'nt. Why isn't there seperate audio and midi track tempo's that can be adjusted individually to match each other and play in sinc ? That would make more sense. Or even automatic tempo sync that when you drag a wav or mp3 into an audio track the midi track adjusts itself to that tempo to match. Then you could speed up or slow down both tracks together to how fast you want the track as a whole.

no tap bpm feature? :(
Why doesn't Logic Pro X have this function? I need to get a tempo to 4 decimal places and the rubbish BPM Counter in Logic only goes to 1. Very frustrating. Good vid btw

Click on the icon where you select on either viewing the track info such as bars and tempo "Beats & Project" or "Beats & Time" and select the bottom option named "Custom"

Pro Tools is not the music industry standard - it is the film industry standard, and we don't generally need bpms when we are cutting sound fx ;)
You call this really easy. I would'nt. Why isn't there seperate audio and midi track tempo's that can be adjusted individually to match each other and play in sinc ? That would make more sense. Or even automatic tempo sync that when you drag a wav or mp3 into an audio track the midi track adjusts itself to that tempo to match. Then you could speed up or slow down both tracks together to how fast you want the track as a whole.
You left out disable stretch.
