Her participation in a professional tournament without having to qualify, raises important discussions about meritocracy and fairness in sports. While her celebrity status and accomplishments in tennis bring valuable attention to pickleball, it’s crucial to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of athletes who climb the ranks through sheer performance and achievements within the sport itself. The essence of sports lies in competition, fairness, and the principle that spots in any tournament should be earned based on current performance and qualification within that specific discipline. This ensures that every athlete, regardless of their past achievements in other sports, competes on a level playing field. It respects the dedication of pickleball players who have been honing their skills, often with fewer resources and less recognition than their counterparts in more established sports. Bouchard’s experience highlights a broader conversation about the pathways to professional levels in emerging sports. As pickleball continues to grow, creating transparent and fair systems for entry into professional tournaments will be essential to maintain the sport’s integrity and competitive spirit. This includes ensuring that wildcard entries and special invitations are used judiciously, balancing the need for promoting the sport with the importance of merit-based competition.

It's fine since pickleball isn't a serious sport yet, better to draw attention to it as much as possible and try to interest trained athletes to try it out.

What are you talking about not a serious sport? You must not be very good if you’re saying this. It’s the fastest growing sport in North America.. what’s not serious about it?

@@kbrown1948 dthorne4602 must have said that for some reason. Maybe he just doesn’t like Pickleball or he doesn’t think that Bouchard is a trained athlete. Well, at least trained enough to do better than she did. Anyway, somehow he found himself here watching Pickleball channels. We can just wish him the best going forward with something that interest him.

only a matter of time before former ATP or WTA players come to dominate pickleball. Already starting to happen (look at Jack Sock in any 2024 singles tournament)

Lots of negative comments - I don't think this is very supportive. The only way I'd be embarrassed is if I came from tennis and said something stupid like "I'm going to break the PPA", then lose horribly. (Johnny Football anyone?) So the question is - what were the expectations ? I think it's proof that they are clearly different sports, and the transfer of skills from one to the other is different for everyone.

I saw online that he was recently voted "Best On Air Talent" in pickleball. I don't know how he got this award but he must have run unopposed. Or maybe only against the female commentator who can't stop saying "Oh my goodness" every time Jack Sock gets near a ball.

I heard she had never played before the tour debut. She says she has played a couple years. So, I can't cut her any slack. She's an emabarrassment to PB. Couldn't hear anymore.

The interview didn't really address what Genie's doing to prepare herself for the pickleball tour, or did I miss something? (I have to admit, I skipped ahead a lot). What's her training schedule? Who's she training with? Her first tournament was a complete embarrassment to her and the game. I might be wrong, but I didn't get the impression from the interview that she's truly dedicating herself to pickleball to the extent she can become a decent pro anytime soon.

Are you nuts - she had to work her butt off to get to No 5 in tennis and it is way harder to succeed on WTA than pro pickleball. She got a contract to promote pickleball and help the league get visibility. She is an asset to pickleball. She will go back to tennis but if pickleball pays it is a business decision. The WTA is in trouble and it is not financially rewarding unless you are too 50 ranking
