I play as an amateur (Sunday league) keeper. This video was fascinating. You put your finger on so many aspects of Cal's goalkeeping, and goalkeeping generally, that I recognise as weaknesses in my own game. Which brings me to my question. You were (rightly) critical of Cal's (rather erratic) positioning, especially when he was on the edge of his penalty area. I also noticed that, even in 1v1 situations, you praised Cal's patience - that is, his willingness to stay deep. So would you say that, if you're an amateur, and not particularly good, goalkeeper, then the default position should always be close to the line? It's kind of the lowest risk strategy, and probably best for the team, right?
@GKGOLUREMI
Жыл бұрын
Ideally you don't want to just be sitting on your line for every ball. Like the other comment here said, if you can beat the striker to the ball in your box that's your best bet of successfully stopping the attack. But if you can't, coming out off your line for these 1v1 situations has it's pros and cons. One con is you are going to kill your reaction time when reacting to a shot. If there is only 4 yards between you and the striker you have a lot less time to react to the shot than if they are shooting from 8 yards away. You also have to worry about them not being in possession of the ball while you are taking ground. Because if they shoot while you are mid-step coming off your line making any sort of save that isn't hit right at your is going to be very difficult. On the other hand if you come out aggressive you will be able to cut down the shooters angle, so they have less of a target to shoot at. So maybe even if you know they will beat you to the ball if you can set up to make a save when only 1-2 yards from the striker you will be able to take up a very large portion of the goal. But for this to be most effective you will need to know how to properly make a split or blocking save / not care about taking a hard shot to your body. The main reason I thought Cal was in the right staying deep is because I don't think he really has that mentality / technique in his locker to make those types of saves. So staying deep probably gave him the better chance to keep the ball out of the net. I mean on all three 1v1 goals he conceded he did stay deep. But he did give himself a chance to make the save on each. On the first goal he was just lazy on his dive. On the second goal he was cheating to his right. If he held his ground the shot was within arms reach of him. And then on the 5th I think he just shouldn't have dove in at the ball with his feet. If it was a more experienced keeper in goal I'd agree that he def should have taken a bit more ground at some point during these saves. But for Cal in this specific match I think staying deeper is the right decision. Pretty sure if he charged out on these balls he would just get rounded or a simple toe poke would easily beat him.

It's just all about positioning and experience. You have to know when to come out and when to stay in and that takes most people years of training and playing to learn. If he can connect with someone who can correct his technical errors and teach him how to read the game, he could be good in a couple of years if he was honest with himself about his abilities. He's obviously gotten to where he is through self-promotion rather than skill.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The issue with staying close to your line is that you are always at a disadvantage in one on ones and are giving the striker an easy go at it. There is no real answer to the question because its one of the fundamentals of goalkeeping

Some really good points in here, especially around positioning from crosses. 1st goal - at 5:26 when you first freeze frame his weight is on his right foot as if he's expecting the shot to his right, then at 5:29 when you roll it on his weight shifts to his left before then again having to go to his right - if he was set in a neutral position this would help. Same with second goal. Goals 5 and 6 also has issues with his set position, on his heels, weight backwards, if he's set correctly he makes a collapse or scoop save in my opinion. 14 by the way is Theo Baker!

I haven't played Football since high school, my main position was goalie (mostly because I'm bad with my feet, but I also enjoyed goalkeeping quite a lot). From what I can tell, he's got a solid foundation. He just needs more experience and better positioning. Overall, he's far from a bad keeper, but he made some really silly mistakes and I think this would have been a great learning experience for him. It's humbling, and while he didn't perform too well, it wasn't all bad. I'd be interested to see him get a 2nd chance in the future.

As a defender and a proud one I always take my games seriously I understand the defender might have been getting mad a Cal as he was making a lot of mistakes himself but also the defender number 4 specifically played horrible I don't understand why he pressured himself all the time, in the one where he turns and just goes for a clearance was not even needed, what I do if I have to turn my back and run, right before I get to the ball I always look behind to make sure no one is rushing and if no one is I grab the ball and see my options or if someone's is heavy on me, while running I notice if my backs are in good space and if not I go back to the keeper, I don't know what he was thinking maybe in a stadium full of people he got in his head a bit. But regardless, he needs to learn more about the position, I am by no means a great defender I am actually the smallest in my group ever at 5'5, but I also have won my regional defender of the year 4 times in 6 years, so I like to think I know a little bit. I did not watch all of it, so maybe someone who did can feel me in, did the number 4 play that bad all game long?.

So, my dad used to be a (quite good) field hockey goalkeeper, and if he hadn't gone to university, he could well have played in the Olympics for GB... I mean, he was substitute in his team only to the Scotland GK. He has taught me a couple of things about how he went about it, and I was wondering how many of them could be considered transferrable skills? The biggest thing he told me, that I remember at least, was that he always drew a mental semi-circle around his goalposts, and stuck to it rigidly when positioning himself, to limit the amount of goal the attacker had to shoot at... He never went closer to his goal, never further from it. Would this be a wise move to make in football? I don't think so, as that would sometimes see you as much as 24ft outside your goal line at times... I imagine it would be more of a squashed semi-circle?

His movement, when he is in defensive positions, just feels a little bit off. But goalkeeping has so much to do with consistent and ongoing training. I had my last match as a GK when i was 17. Now it just feels very odd being a GK, because i lost so much of my positioning. As a teenager i just had this trust in my ability to secure the goal and the box.
@GKGOLUREMI

Hello goalkeepers
Hey @gkgoluremi awesome analysis - I was wondering, what tool are you using to move the players around and draw the lines in the video? would love to hear back from you, thanks!
Imagine getting angry at teammates during a charity match when you also made some bad mistakes
The problem with "social media goalkeepers" is that they show what they want. And millions of viewers think they are good based on handpicked edited videos. I am sure Cal is a decent player (as shown by his footwork) but a bad goalie

I’ve played Football for a long time and being a Goalie is a really hard (probably the hardest) position to play, you need to be able to communicate, decently athletic, read the play and just be intelligent, and yes you do need to be lucky, Cal doesn’t deserve all the hate, he did make some bad mistakes but I’m sure the next time he’s gonna learn and be a lot better

Seeing as you were constantly complimenting Toby and Manny surprised by their ability they recently got scouted by crawley town
there we go i never thought i would a reaction to cal's performance but there it is
As a defender and a proud one I always take my games seriously I understand the defender might have been getting mad a Cal as he was making a lot of mistakes himself but also the defender number 4 specifically played horrible I don't understand why he pressured himself all the time, in the one where he turns and just goes for a clearance was not even needed, what I do if I have to turn my back and run, right before I get to the ball I always look behind to make sure no one is rushing and if no one is I grab the ball and see my options or if someone's is heavy on me, while running I notice if my backs are in good space and if not I go back to the keeper, I don't know what he was thinking maybe in a stadium full of people he got in his head a bit.

It looks like, as if Cals goalkeeping only exists for social media. Like he never (or maybe ages ago) got proper training or match experience. I completely lost this confidence, that the box is my area.
