Pro Gaming Ruined The Fun In Games

Many people believe Esports or the internet has ruining gaming, so The Black Hokage explores the topic of downfall of gaming + more in this series called Hot Takes. Just don't expect him to only touch on how competitive tryhards have ruined gaming.
Also don't expect anything on the history of gaming, how gaming isn't fun, online gaming community, a history of gaming guides, league of legends, world of warcraft or anything else like that.

There’s been surveys in recent years that the vast majority of “gamers” don’t actually complete their games so while I agree a focused experience is better than one with unnecessary bloat and padding I think it’s wrong to assume the average gamer would finish a game once let alone 5-6 times even if it’s a short experience. The type that would play a game multiple times are in the minority 5-20% of the audience.

Bruh it's always been like that lol. You act like people didn't get cooked in MW2 lobbies for being garbo. People want to get good at games sometimes, they play the game for THEIR enjoyment, not yours. If you lose in matches, because you're not trying that's okay, get over it that's the factor of life. Metas have always existed from Odd Job in golden eye 64, to Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl for the NES, to double shotties in MW2. Imma always see these comments as scrubby comments because it's exactly what a scrub would say. Ofc you're gonna lose against someone who's trying while you're not, or they're just actually better than you. Just play the game how you want and take your losses like everyone else 🤷🏿‍♂️

I'm saying it's literally been that way since people have been playing games period. I admit I ranted after the second sentence, but it's still on point with what you're saying. I'll keep it like manageable so then I don't rant again. Pro gaming hasn't changed that much about multiplayer, some people just like being good at games and seeing their efforts pay off. The biggest toxicity came from the devs' decision to break up online lobbies after every match. While you got the occasional "riot shield moment," it incentivized people to turn on their mics and chill out. I don't mind meeting new people but spending the energy to connect with another player feels like a speed dating formula. You got one match to read their personality, break the ice and build rapport, and if you weren't decisive, you never saw'em again. It's been probably a full decade since I've turned my mic on and almost 3 years since I've touched a mutiplayer with randoms because modern mutiplayer is more isolated than traveling the Mojave in New Vegas.

I understand both sides of the pro gaming argument. Some people just want to enjoy the game because that’s exactly what it is. A game. It’s meant to be stress relief and relaxing. However, because money is involved now, you can live off games IF YOU ARE GOOD/POPULAR ENOUGH. Its a dream come true for some people. But in turn, it ruins the experience of those who want to simply de-stress after a long hard day. And pro gaming is NOWHERE NEAR at that point where it’s like the NFL/NBA

@@dream6562 find a way to make that hobby cheaper. Most gaming systems have a subscription service so you can get a lot of value for a lil money. Don't buy new games if you aren't gonna play them immediately. I bought rise of the Ronin day 1. Haven't even booted it up cuz I was playing dragon's dogma 2. Waste of money I could have waited for a sale. Also wait for sales or reviews. Don't waste ya money thinking an unproven game is gonna be fire only to be disappointed. And most importantly. If you have a unhealthy relationship with a game series (specifically a yearly one) drop it. Too many people I know will drop the full 70 on the yearly releases of CoD, 2k, madden, fifa, etc and only play them for like 2 months. And not enjoy playing past the 2 week mark but they feel obligated to play it since they spent the money on it. I cut 2k out of my budget for a bit and said I'd be back when they add crossplay. I'm back on my hating shit and not going back cuz that was a waste of time and money this year. Madden was a bit better this year than normal and it's still fuck CoD since Ghost. Next time you buy a game think are you about to play that game any time soon. And are you gonna abandon it right after the 2 week honeymoon phase ends. Shiddd if you wait most of them games go on deep sales like 3 months after release. That's all money on your pocket. I doubt you actually wanted advice but I'm serious when I say gaming is expensive but you can find ways to cut corners

Speaking about some MMOs coming out, people are going hype for some of these games that are being announced and I feel like we're having the same conversations now. DmC did a lot more wrong than just trying to be different. I remember marketing for the game was basically just shitting on the original Devil May Cry series. I remember them specifically having a small presentation on why the original Dante is lame and the reboot design is better. Many, fans of the game consider OG Dante to literally be THE coolest video game protagonist ever, so they were doomed from the start. I actually enjoyed DmC, both the gameplay and overall aesthetic, and actually do think it’s a good game. I honestly think that if it was its own separate IP it might even have somewhat of a following. If you judge it as a Devil May Cry game though, it fails to reach the same level as the others (except maybe Devil May Cry 2 in terms of gameplay) Imagine if Halo was rebooted and Master Chief was replaced with Samus, and when asked why, the developers said “Master Chief wasn’t cool anyway lol.” That creates immediate resentment from existing from Halo fans. Also it really doesn’t help that Vergil’s original redesign was basically seen as a neckbeard fantasy. Which is arguably one of the most not cool things there are.

The gameplay was fun, the worldbuilding with demons controlling human society was interesting and while not my favorite iteration of Dante he didn't make the game insufferable to play. Hot take: Most gamers are either hypocrites, idealogues, or just flat out boldly ignorant when it comes to the innerworkings of the videogame industry and the practices that are being implemented. Because of this, they are often times not worth listening too when it comes to changes the industry should kill, adopt, or maintain. Most recent example being the Star Wars Outlaws pricing drama. Ever since new generation of consoles dropped and the prices of games have increased to $70, gamers have complained. However, when given an option to pay $18/month through a subscription service for the same game that costs $130, people would rather focus on the optional $130 price tag instead or praising or at the very least discussing how the subscription service model could be a step in the right direction when it comes to the digital marketplace/triple A development.

I'm just not invested in any video game enough to play that way but that mentality seems like it's the norm now. I'm glad I'm old enough to remember games weren't always focused around being super competitive and can just unplug completely from online without feeling like I'm missing out on the core of a game. It sucks that younger gamers got introduced into gaming in this state, they think everything is about getting good at a damn video game smh

Pro gaming has fucked everything up because, and i'll give some examples here. The Sweat. The Sweatiest of sweats in games. You can't just enjoy a game with your friends, because everyone has at least 1 friend that thinks games are for you to go pro and if you can't "Git Gud" you shouldn't game. it's one thing to be pushed. it's another completely different one that you got at least 1 person treating every game like it's his lifes goal to be the best of the best. Some of us just want to be casual. secondly, some of us who stream are just trying to create a community. Someone who wants to recreate the "sitting on the couch with a friend and trading controller back and forth". to create a Cozy experience to game with friends. But there are a lot of streamers that don't care about a community, they just want people to think they are good. They want to dip their Balls in another player's mouth. that's their life's goal. Games are for FUN. NOT to only play if you intend to be the best of the best. Casual players have just as much right to play a game as the sweats. So stop trying to force Casuals to play with ball dipping sweatlords. You want a challenge? Go find a competitive only situation or gaming group and stop making us try to play at your level. I don't need to play at your level to have fun. Games are not ONLY for you, they are for everyone.

Games centered around local multiplayer were better than online multiplayer games. You had to take into account the experience one would have while being with others. Making the game more fun due to people’s company. Smash bros online is cool and definitely a big aspect of the game but I do not think it would be nearly as big if it didn’t have the local multiplayer function. More games should get back into this and incentivize people to get together to play their favorite games. Also stop with the redundant shooting games, get creative.

I do agree, competitive gaming made people want to be better at multiplayer games (fighting games, shooters etc), but is that a bad thing? it depends. I find it weird that people will negatively point blame at a pro scene for inspiring a generation to want to be better at something, it's almost like getting mad at the NBA for inspiring people to one day be as good as Lebron or better. It feels like a coping mechanism for people that can't come close to playing at that level or more and even if it's for fun, the amount of people that go to a local REC center to play like its Game 5 4th Quarter is crazy. Another thing, the pro scene for most games aren't hurting due to lack of interest, they're hurting because they're spending WAY too much money. The players are being overpaid and the ORGs are hurting as a result.
