my first second reaction was that B was actually more muddy, but after listening for a little longer i just realised that was because A sounded thin and B was more full and has lots more depth.

Same. I bet if we had heard B first and A second we would have thought A was thinner straight away. This taught me that the order in which we hear multiple sources can play a role in how we perceive the material.

It's crazy how much "patchwork" our brains do with it's internal dac equivalent function for our senses. And for audiophiles, that sounds totally backwards, but all the filtering our brains do is really quite amazing and to our benefit, the vast majority of the time

B do also smear the sound out more. More depth and warmer especially on the vocals, but A was more distinct in the transients. Maybe because of less details in the low end.

@@caseykittel or maybe they just prefer this sound sig. Doesnt have to be a trap... Every pair of ears hears different An example: I know people who would call the Beyerdynamic DT990, beyer dt880, ATH M40x or the AKG K712, as "flat" / "neutral". I tested every one of the above. They all sound vastly different. To my ears, the dt990 and the M40X are clearly v-shaped and the AKG has a lack of bass and the dt880 sounds flat/neutral to me. The hearing frequenzy range of our ears is btw not flat. So a flat frquz response headphone or dac can not sound "neutral" to a human ear..

There's something I like about B, you can hear how all the elements on the mix are more cohesive and complement each other as if it was just one big instrument. A can sound clearer sometimes because you can feel that "digital" tone that makes the vocal and high end instruments a little bit harsher than B.

  • @bigdap100
    @bigdap1002 жыл бұрын

B, Hilo...that was easy. 👍✅ -Resolution, aka the separation between frequencies. It allows you the hear "air" around the instruments, which highlights the nuances and embellish the reverbs. ***Fun Fact, High End DACs will upgrade your plugins, especially your EQs, Reverbs, and VSTs. So, instead of spending $1k on plugins, spend $1k to $2k on a good converter and your mic, stock and free plugs, monitors, and everything else will improve.

I remember I went from a Komplete Audio interface ($500, which I thought was pretty good) to a Prism Audio Titan ($4,400 at the time) and I was originally a little let down that it didn't sound that different when listening to music. Then I went and worked on some songs and found I was immediately able to recognize issues with snares/percussion/bass/stereo width/compression and correct them super quickly. Easily my best investment, and still the most expensive piece of kit I own. Keep that in mind when listening to this, as working with the audio is where that quality makes the difference; Good AD/DA conversion and high-quality, clean recording is a life-saver.

I just read the results at the bottom of your description. I am impressed. I had it backwards. This goes to show that interfaces in general are miles ahead of what they used to be years ago. And because Behringer merge with great companies like Midas, TC Electronics, Tannoy, and other great companies. they are able to produce way better products today than years ago. And because the results are a bit subtle, this goes to show that a person with a budget studio with a interface like the Behringer can actually produce very decent results at a way cheaper price point. The real question would be, if these tracks were not A and B exactly next to each other, would the audience notice it on the radio. Most likely not.

The behringer sounded "muddy" @100 to 200Hz and the Hilo sounded "brighter" in the high mid range due to Guitar Frequency territory bias maybe?? Great video, I appreciate your taking the time to do this. A was wider and had more air, B was more mono and had more depth. I could make A sound like B, and make B sound better with more width. Now, the choice for me would be is it worth the time and effort to make A get more depth and solid mids and lows, or use B and get more width and air? And at what cost. (Oh and I guessed correctly because B had more of a tube amp sound to it.)

    (B) almost got me fooled, on the dramatic stereo image collapse, of the synths and losing the brightness on the very first A/B pass, because I'm listening on tiny speakers. But afterwards it becomes very apparent, where the money of Hilo is - the dynamic range, and noise floor - the punch from the transients, and the clarity of vocals, e.t.c. After switching back to (A) it sounds like, when I overcook the exciters and stereo widening on something :) This is the best DA demonstration I've seen on KZread. Kindly please do A-D stage as well!

I'm proud to say that I got it right on my Sony "Home Theater" speakers! Right off the bat, the clarity in the lows and low mids was noticeably there in the case of B. As far as winning the Behringer audio interface goes, I think my current setup with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (oldest gen) and a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 could use some fresh blood...!

I honestly enjoy both. I could see mixing something aggressive like rock or metal easily through the Behringer. Maybe trying to get that smooth 70s analog sound may take some work through the more aggressive transient production of the Behringer. I think you should send me that Behringer just for that purpose. I have been mixing and mastering a lot of metal and hard rock music lately. I typically use a PreSonus firestudio. I would love to try that Behringer out. I have been curious about their products for many years. The only thing that I owned by them is a 16 channel mixing board from a live audio business that I had from 2005 to 2015. The preamps on that board are great for metal guitar tones. Anyhow, great video. I look forward to the next one.

For me I preferred (A) over (B), (A) sounded more transparent to my ears around the upper mid band frequencies but lacked something in the lower registers, but it may come down to tonal character. I would say (B) was the high end. Audio interface and (A) was the consumer one. Great video by the way as always streaks, I enjoy your comparison videos and great breakdowns of mastering techniques for those of us who are not deep in the field of mastering. The funny thing is I need a new audio interface as my 10 plus year old Lexicon Omega clapped out on me recently and I was looking at the exact wallet friendly replacement, but ended up using a more crude method to record through than I would like.

This was a pretty easy blind test for me as I used a Hilo for a while. The Behringer sounds great for the price and I guess if you learned how it translated to other sources, there is no reason why you shouldn't buy one and use it. After using a Hilo for a few years I went for a Merging Anubis last year, but whilst it sounds great, the drivers on a PC (which I use now) are so unstable and you have to jump through hoops half the time to get things to work. I then had an Apollo UAD for a brief period as I have gone completely In-The-Box for mixing and mastering now and want to be completely mobile, but again the Apollo was let down by it's drivers and randomness. Sounds good though. Silky and posh. I have finally settled on an RME interface. Rock solid with really great converters and the Babyface Pro FS can fit in my pocket. I now master completely on that, a Laptop and a pair of Audeze LCD-Xs and have never been happier. I miss the posh sound of the Hilo sometimes but mine died and at the time I couldn't afford to replace it. But as I said, more than happy with the RME now and love being able to work anywhere. I would consider a Behringer for streaming etc though. The price is ridic!!

:). I use RME MADI as an main system, but on Windows is good to have other one for playing other sounds without switching driver between random apps. Nice to have. Best regards:)

I liked A during the first take until you had us listen to specific elements and then B was my favorite. I haven't checked the description yet. I'm about to spend a bunch of money on Burl converts so I hope I don't get this wrong but I think B is the higher end converter. Edit: I was sweating as I looked in the description

First play through I preferred a then after listening to transients b was miles better. Now seen b was the more expensive interface. Great video and good tip to take on board.

I liked A for the crispness of snare, but I agree B Is Deeper & smoother overall, but the differences are surprisingly subtle.

Honestly, I preferred interface A for the round low ending for something like a sub bass or a Bootsy Collins type bass but preferred interface B for the punch of the snare and the kick. Both of them sounded amazing. I actually own a umc404hd and Motu-M4. The Lynx sound comparable to the Motu-M4 to me.

Hey Streaky, this was really interesting. Could you try the same test with a few more interfaces ranging from cheap to mid-range I'd love to know how my Focusrite 18i20 compares with the Lynx.

*through my smartphone speaker:* B snare cuts brighter and more lively, got more air, maybe a little less of "body" or thump if that makes any sense. A sounds more "retro" to me. All of this from a smartphone point of view (70%vol.)
