We've had some questions regarding a binaural demo; to give an accurate demo of the soundstage the replay side should have a predictable and comparable quality response. We did have succes reproducing this on a Stax headphone though.

Hi Wytse and Leonard. I have a question: I have electrostatic headphones for extra monitoring because of their short transient. response, (But I find it's hard to mix on them for other reasons) I see most of your speaker is dynamic drivers of different materials? Other than the ultra high frequency? My question is how would you compare dynamic drivers and electrostatic drivers performance and use in monitors? Thank you!

@@kaori-3882 Thanks for this question, Tom. We're also fans of electrostatic speakers; though the SPL levels and low end extension is not what you'd want as a main system generally. The response of the Quasar system is aimed at the speed of electrostatic speakers; but it dynamically delivers like a PA system.

This topic of masking is fascinating - because I experience that when I switch between my monitors, and two different headphones - and also my phone speaker - they all REVEAL some details that I could not hear before. About reverbs, vocal takes, edits, etc. You’re bang on right: an amazing studio setup would be able give you all that information at once. Obviously that’s a hard task but no doubt you can get closer to perfection!

I would enjoy a co lab video with LennArt. I have a question about how the perfectly adjusted room/speaker will work, if the incoming source changes from maybe switching some gear in the signal chain. Is it especially calibrated to fit Your specific gear atm and which gear changes could then mess up the calibration? Could even a different Audio Interface change those curves?

Hi guys, well. I'm starting my bedroom studio and I'm about to do DIY acoustic treatment. I have a pair of Presonus Eris 3.5 monitors. My question is, how to get the most out of those lil drivers? How close to the them and the wall can I place them and is it necessary to by a sub or can I do fine with my headphones and a room sim?

These would be great in my untreated basement set up.

Those are interesting loudspeakers/monitors, mainly because the driver setup is against what is known to work properly. 😊 I’m not suggesting that they’re not amazing, because I’m confident that they must be. But an “unbiased” opinion is very hard (if not impossible) for any human. 😉 It don’t mean it in a negative way, but we all have our own bias on almost everything, be it the food that we like the most, or what sounds best for each one of us (starting with our favorite music styles, or even recordings that we consider as all-time references). I love your videos and the way you present things, so don’t get me wrong. The whole subject of monitors/loudspeakers is something that fascinates me for decades, which also makes it interesting to see what loudspeakers were used to mix and master many reference recordings (some which have been used for decades to show of audio equipment), and the monitors/loudspeakers used are very (and I mean very) different along these recordings, and we still have to introduce the “room factor”. While no audio engineer can adjust something that the loudspeakers aren’t reproducing, the human ear (or should I say the brain) is able to compensate up to a certain point, and cross referencing on other loudspeakers/rooms has always been a part of it. I would love to see a more in depth explanation of this loudspeaker, and the principles behind this particular project.

I'd be interested in learning how they addressed phase alignment with these monitors. It doesn't seem like the drivers are physically time aligned, so are they using dsp to compensate? Also, for the subwoofer, how are they overcoming the inertia? Does it use a feedback loop like a servo controlled woofer? Would love to learn more about these speakers.

You can do phase alignment with well designed analog all pass too. But yeah that is an interesting question. For the woofer dampening, maybe an impedance feedblack loop. I'am wondering if there is any time treatment for the six mid range drivers, because that should be a comb filtering nightmare.

@@PopeOfDope22 Something like an active analog crossover would be very cool. 6 drivers definitely can cause comb filtering, but I guess it really depends on what frequency range they are being used at. I've even seem design where they only send higher frequencies to the middle drivers to mitigate some comb filtering/phase issues. Hopefully the designers does a follow up and sheds some light on what's really going on

@@PopeOfDope22 yes, you can phase align with all passes, but you get a bad phase response and bad group delay, that's the masking he was talking about i think. there is no way around a dsp time compensation when the speakers are flush mounted.

I did see a Biamp DSP in a previous video during install, and that’s probably where corrections and adjustments were made. I use Biamp systems in commercial AV and personally in my studio as a monitor controller only. I am curious about the role the Biamp plays in this speaker system, although I’m sure the details are proprietary.

Can you explain why ppl say and i see on covers a other person mixing for vinyl then digital or Cd? Are they not the same music?

Phase is hardly audible. You don't hear differences between sines and cosines. It's only audible when there is a massive amount of groupdelay (which is pretty much only possible when you dont use common sense). I'm more curious about the dispersion, time domain response and distortion.

​@@nodaysback8390 ​ Because you don't hear the difference between a sine and a cosine. A phase shift is nothing more then a delay. You really don't hear a delay. It's the same as pressing the play button of a CD a second later. Even when low frequencies are delayed more than high frequencies it's hardly audible. It's only audible when there is a MASSIVE difference in delay between high frequencies and low frequencies (I just say high and low frequencies, but really I mean two arbitrarily chosen different frequency bands). This is exactly what the group delay shows us. It's the change of phase with respect to frequency. Phase cancelation (canceling of waves because they come from different sources such as different drivers and diffraction) can be audible, but in that case we don't hear a difference between phase. We then hear the change in frequency response! After all, two drivers can be in phase, but if the tweeter is delayed 360 degrees in phase shift, you won't see a difference in amplitude or folded phase response, but the group delay is definitely there. This is also why phase response is pretty hard to really mess up, because you need to intentionally put n*360 degrees of phase shift on a driver. The phase cancelation issues will show up in other measurements such as frequency response of each driver and sum of total system (poor allignment will show poor summation at crossover frequency). Another measurement will be the dispersion. If the magnitude of the signal at crossover doesn't peak on-axis, then the drivers are not properly alligned. I do think those parameters are important (as mentioned in my previous comment). Fun fact, bass reflect ports and passive radiators delay bass frequencies even more than sealed systems. Yet nobody cares about that. Those systems also have a lot more problems that sealed systems don't have (secondary port resonance, ringing issues in time domain which are unavoidable, non-linear distortion due to compression in port or saturation of the PR). For some reason those ports and PR's are wildly popular.

@@nodaysback8390 yes, and that only occurs when you use 2 or more sources. You can use super position (assuming reasonable linearity) to find the effect of 2 sines combined. You will find that the sines add up perfectly when in phase: sine + sine = 2sine. As they move farther away from eachother they add up less perfectly and will eventually cancel (sine-sine=0 as you said). However that's not what the phase response tells you. The phase response tells you that if you input a certain tone, it gets delayed by X degrees. This means that if I the phase response is 0.5 pi degrees at 2pi Hz, the output of a 2pi sine is sine(x+0.5pi). The phase response itself doesnt tell anything about cancellation of drivers or whatsoever. It is merely the delay between input signal and output signal.

This thread is super informative for audio geeks, and it’s a great example of why talking things out and keeping an open mind is a best practice. A question for @Hidde … I use a plug-in called Dr MS by Mathew Lane on my 2-bus. It has channel-specific (L-R or Mid-Side) delay in ms which can also be applied to a channel thru low pass or hi pass. Could this processing correct any of the phase anomalies caused by delayed signals you described in a post above? Or…is the issue you described more of a hardware and room issue?

I really want two monitoring setups. One blurry and one precise. Both with flat frequency domain responses. I just have a feeling that it's a good idea...

Wyte’s I have an important question which I hope you can answer. Is it possible to work in the project sample rate of 44khz but have specific desired channels to be a higher sample rate? Like 96khz Because pitch correction works better at a higher sample rate. So instead turning the whole project to 96khz I want to be able to just record one track at 96khz. And I don’t want to convert it from a lower sample rate to a higher one I want to record it on the way in at the highest possible rate to affect it.

The midrange driver is a Mark Audio, the woofer looks like a Dayton RSS390, the dome midrange is a Accuton as well as the tweeter and the other drivers on the sides looks like a Dayton ND series woofer.

@@godsbeautifulflatearth Unfortunately I’m not in a position to hear the speakers either! I’d argue you never want to “hear” a crossover or any type of phase or timing compensation. It should just sound like one clear speaker.

What is you'r opinion about Genelec 8040?

Just use a ORTF setup at your listening position and we'll get a pretty good picture of how those sound like

How loud do you monitor at?

Are you still using Sonar Works SoundID Reference for those speakers or are u using them uncalibrated?

Quasar is tuned to the engineer. That is one of the things I didn’t mention in my video, but the calibration is made together with the engineer that is going to use them. By matching the calibration to the engineer, the translation gets even better 😊

What about using a Trinnov system though? I'm not an expert in this stuff but I understand Trinnov also fix problems with phase response etc. I get that a system designed from the ground up and custom installed will always be better, but otherwise what are the inherent advantages of this approach over Trinnov?

If you want to precisely address the timing of a multiway speaker you can (in my opinion) best compensate each way individually; since you'll otherwise compromise especially in the overlapping regions of the crossovers.

Doesnt the desk and angle get in the way? I just recently realized that the sweet spot for my monitors is about 20 cm lower than my head. I'm going to put them up, because the clarity is just totally different there...

How much did you pay for this Monitor System? What's the Price for?

I'm sitting here being jealous about how good Sandstorm by Darude can sound on that setup =) At the same time I understand that with my small untreated room I can only rely on a near field monitoring. This involves relatively small 2-way speakers. And I think that I'll benefit from less crossover points and less drivers, as the distance is too close for the waves to combine in my case. In addition, I do own a mobile dj setup with couple of Yamaha S115V and couple 15'' subs, but there's not enough space for them to sound well in my rurrent room - they are just being used for other scenarios. Anyways, that huge system is something that requires a well-treated room to fit. It's such an overpowered thing for me right now. But that's really impressive!

Why is the speaker cap dented? And what about your own hearing, do you get regular hearing tests? I once fell hard on my head so i have scarring on my eardrum, , can't hear a lot above 7000hz with that ear.

They where review units that I had to return. When I reviewed the Dutch and Dutch I was already in the buying process of Quasar. Also, Quasar has the headroom that D&D was lacking in my studio…

My question is why does your meter bridge on your desk look like it goes higher than the bottom row of drivers? Seems like a lot of the output from that bottom row is going to bounce off the back of the desk and reflect all over the place instead of going to your ears. It also looks like your left/right imaging is going to be a little bit off as one side of your meter bridge is open while the other side is blocked and with that bottom row of drivers at that low of a position..... I think you completely miss the point of a secondary monitoring system these days, its to give you a representation of how it sounds on a system that doesn't tell the truth such as crappy headphones, bad car system, etc. If the speakers you have are as accurate as you say your totally missing the stuff that gets lost when the mix is played back on a sub optimal system.
