My parents were devout Roman Catholics, with a young 2 year old me, and never understood the hysteria. They thought you just don't let young kids play extremely violent games. Plus you were literally saving Earth from demons in Doom.

I give congrats to your parents for being a lot more sensible than many other parents at the time. My parents were the same with me when I was kid during the 2000s, not outright objecting to the existence of games like GTA but just not letting me play them because I was way too young.

Hold on, you were nine or ten when DOOM came out? You're the same age as me?! Wow. I didn't hear about DOOM until a while later even though my dad played it when it first came out because *no way* Mom was letting that anywhere *near* me. She also forbade Indiana Jones because she watched it on a date with Dad and was traumatized. I think she forgets sometimes that her children don't necessarily have the same sensitivities as her. Or maybe she was worried about it giving me ideas, since she knew what sort of pictures I drew.

I remember when Doom was released as well, though I was young at the time, it wasn't as big a controversy in Australia. Doom, Quake and most importantly Duke Nukem were the games of my childhood, I never got a console until I was an adult, so I was a PC gamer.

Now a days companies make games that have the same amount of controversy that DOOM use to have and get away with it

Civie 11 is pretty good at build engine games like blood and Shadow warrior but isn't that good at doom. That's probably because most doom fans are soo use to custom maps that it Trivalized original doom because they make plutonia look piss easy by comparison

One thing i have an issue with civvie is him dissing Sandy Petersen in a display of just regurgitating other ppls opinions. Sandy Petersen as a map and game maker was just ahead in a lot of ways and despite what some fans think most of the devs really liked his maps and they even have an cult following in a way that other greats like American Mcgee just don't. In particular his episode of quake which was the last one is just pure perfection of game design and it helps that he even has an original enemy that he created and only he out of the original quake map makers used(partially because John Romero couldn't handle it just like he couldn't handle the vore so they had to nerf it). There is a good reason why ppl outside the FPS sphere still view S.P. as the "gaming grandpa". If there is anyone that should be dissed its Romero who hasn't made a good map since doom and even there i find them only mediocre for the most part(not to mention that some of his maps give him credit when more ppl worked on them like civvie mentioned ).
