I raced the Scottish national 25mtt in 96/97 (can’t remember now which) When I finished riding I realised that I was locked out of my club mates car that we’d traveled to the race in. Graeme Obree saw me shivering as he was warming up and let me sit in his car, he even left me with the keys while he went on to ride. What a guy! His heart and generosity are as amazing as his cycling achievements. Legend

I use Graeme's hour record breathing technique in running. When I get close to the aerobic breaking point, I will do his breathing technique and get into control again. Very noticable running in a group on the track, getting shuffled to the back, about to break and drop into a jog, and then recover. GENIUS that man. Met him only once when he was selling wacky carbon handlebars of his own design. LEGEND.

Regarding power meters, in extreme hot weather such as here in Houston the heart rate monitor is a lot more important. That 230 watts that is just cruising along at 15 degrees can really get you in trouble at 40 degrees.

Groupsets should absolutely be getting better for the same price, I don't agree that you have to get a tiagra for the price of an old 105. You should be able to get the improvements of technology for the same inflation adjusted price. But bc shimano and sram both increase there's no pressure to keep prices down

Personally, the one thing that fixes burnout without fail is total separation from that thing. One of my main hobbies is scale modelling, which can often take a lot of time and effort to produce only a small thing. Burnout is quite common. However when I feel that complete lack of interest and motivation creep in I just stop, and every time within a couple of weeks I'm itching to get back to it. I think of it like food. We all like food, and nice food especially! And we all need it too. But even if you have the nicest breakfast possible when you wake up, you will reach a point where you don't want to eat any more. Then you'll go a few hours without food, and not even the thought of it. But then sure enough you start getting hungry again and it's time for lunch. Hobbies seem to work basically the exact same way, and the best solution to having 'eaten too much' is simply to wait and you'll be hungry again soon. --- Regarding the power meters thing, I think they're actually very good. Before I had one I took things a lot less seriously, in a bad way. Cycling was purely entertainment, and I wouldn't push myself much if at all. I feel like I have a very good handle on perceived effort being a cyclist all my life, however it was very difficult for me to plan routes and try new things without any data. The power meter has given me hard numbers to use. I know what sort of thing I *can* climb, even if I really don't want to. I know how hard I can push myself and when (if at all) I'll 'hit the wall' as runners would say. Before it was total guesswork, which meant planning new routes much more difficult. They're not necessary at all, and often too expensive for what they are really, but having a power meter has led to me making consistent improvement - getting fitter and faster with every ride - because I can track myself over time. Before hand the best I had was ride time and memory to try and estimate what sort of training results I was achieving, and if I was improving. And if I used different routes I'd have no idea how they all related to one another in terms of that.

The way to avoid "cycling burnout" is to see cycling as a great transportation method that has a sporting aspect. Something like motoring. Most people don't race cars, but for those who do, life will eventually get in the way. If you drive a Ferrari in daily traffic, you'll be frustrated most of your life. Same thing goes for spending too much time on a Pinarello F.

Spot on about Tiagra (and lower spec groups from Shimano). I ride a 2021 Tarmac SL6 with Tiagra R4720 and Roval C38 wheels. Apart from less gears than 105, it is brilliant. Problem is that most cycling snobs need 105 or higher. Edit: my gravelbike is a Cube Nuroad with Claris 2x (50/34 - 11/32) and it rips! Great performance for the money. If I crash it doesn’t break the bank.

I rather use SRAM Apex/Rival 1x11 (not much more expensive but getting phased out) or Sensah GRX 1x12. 2x9 doesn't offer any additional gear ratios over 1x12 and speaking of gravel - unless you're a pro or bomb down alpine descents a 50/34 crank isn't suitable at all.

  • @ArnageLM

@@ArnageLM The price is compelling indeed. But I think you can get better bang out of your money. I won't go back 30 years to 2x8 speed (which equals 1x10 in terms of unique gear ratios) for any money. So I'd rather go with budget 1x groups (Microshift, Sensah, old SRAM). And I don't think it's good they put gargantuan 50/34 cranksets on gravel bikes. No clutch on the Claris/Sora/Tiagra RDs doesn't help either.

Thats quite literally it. People who are hung up on the name. The whinging when 105 di2 came out was astonishing. Shimano have, for years improved their top end groupsets and what used to be cutting edge makes it down to the lower end groupsets. I would wager that Tiagra will go 11 speed in the next few years and basically become the same as 11 speed 105.

His tuck position came before before his superman position. And the bearing from the washing machine was with respect to the q factor. Having a narrower bb meaned he needed some bearings. Which just so happened was from his washing machine. All the above meant the mosers hour record being broken (who under Ferrari was doped.)

Speaking of burnout - usually it happens when a thing you do is much more than just that thing. For example, when people cycle not just (or mostly) for the sheer joy and fun of it, but it becomes a way to prove themselves. At some point I think it consumes a person and sucks all the joy out of the process. So I always remember to do silly, easy rides just for fun to remind myself that being on bike not always means breaking distance records and suffering doing intervals.

You find them on bikes in the price range you'd get with 105/Ultegra 10 years ago. For the price of a 105 Di2 you could get a Dura Ace mechanical 10 years ago, Apex is the price of Force 10 years ago.

I spent $450 for the groupset, my bike rides great and it saved me $1,000. Comparing things from 10 years ago? Sora is just as good if not better than 105 from 10 years ago. I have 105 on my bike from 1987, which at the time was top of the line. Sora is way better than that system. Tyler Hamilton, The Secret Race is a fantastic book, explains this better than I'm about to. In his era The governing body at the time said that your hemoglobin levels could be up to a certain level say 50 parts per whatever, and you'll be fine, go over this, and you're going to be classed as doping. So everyone who was doping, doped up to that level. Sounds fair right? Well no, because not everyone's level was the same, so if your natural level was say 48, you were done for, you couldn't take the risk. However, if you were lucky enough to be in the late 30s or lower 40s you could dope and get a much larger performance gain, like Lance, you were quids in. And thus having a free for all dope inclusive Tour De Crack Heads wouldn't be fair, as we're not all created equal.

Toradol would also be an interesting drug to discuss. As far as I know, it’s legal (it’s used all the time in the NFL). It’s an NSAID like ibuprofen that you can inject. And fun fact: 30 mg of IV toradol (ketorolac) was found to be as effective as 12 mg of morphine in a study (without the addictive effects as far as we know). It’s used all the time to treat pain after surgery, and it’s very effective. Ask anyone who has had surgery or passed a kidney stone. It can totally ruin your kidneys or stomach if you have kidney issues or stomach ulcers. But if it’s legal, I’m sure some athletes would be willing to take the risk.

For winter training, why not a basic mountainbike? 29" with 2.35" Schwalbe Big Apple style tyres. Predictable in the wet, roll fine. Comfortable, which helps because in winter you're more static on the bike. My training bike is a 29" MTB with ridig for and for bars a flipped trekking bar. Slight drop to it that way. Mighty fast, for a mountainbike. I have a single narrow-wide 36t up front but think I'll make that a 42. For a cassette I'm thing of an 11t for extreme tailwind (no downhills here unless it's a tunnel/bridge) and then the gap to 13t, 14-15-17... Adding the 12t in between 11 and 13 would cross up the chain more than idea, I am thinking? 135 mm hubs all the way for me still.

A question in earnest to whoever may have a theory. Pogacar beat the field in the TT in the recent Tour de France, except one guy. Vingegaard not only eviscerated the field but crushed Pogacar by 1:30. Yes of course, some of this was due to Vingegaard's surgical technique, but the rest was just w/kg. Some believe Pogacar is the best cyclist overall on the planet. My question is...if doping is scutinized and samples given before and after stages...and it is very difficult to explain Vinnegaard's advantage in 3 of the stages of the great race that separated him to a comfortable winning margin, how is it provable that Jonas was not transfusing his blood after grueling stages? Fresh blood = better performance. This maybe unprovable either way. Lance did it of course. But his blood was also laced with performance enhancing substances. But, how about remove the substances that can be detected by modern blood tests and just provide a fresh blood supply after each grueling stage after the blood is degraded with lactate and toxins? How is this provable either way?...or can it be proved or disproven? On the subject of doping, I just don't believe Vingegaard was that dominant over someone believed to be the best cyclist in the last 10 years 'all natural'. Only my opinion. Curious what you guys think?

Speaking about consumer demand with regards to group sets, as a computer/tech nerd, you want to always be moving forward and not backward; so when the demand for bikes spiked during COVID, you have a plethora of newbie riders taking up “higher end” group sets, and anything lower just doesn’t feel right. Putting it into perspective, let’s talk about Jimmy’s fear of going electronic group sets and how he didn’t want to do it because he knows it’s JUST THAT GOOD, and he wouldn’t want anything lesser afterward. The obvious remedy to that would be to get a cheaper alternative like LTWOO eRX. Too bad they don’t make a mechanical brake option for a more accessible alternative (to be used on rim brakes or mechanical disc brakes).

Graeme Obree, so underrated. Apart from anything else just look at Obree riding his road bike in Battle Mountain. He's just riding old style Sora but... he'd got narrow bars and he's angled his brake hoods inwards for a more aero position. Exactly what all the pros are doing now that the "puppy paws" position has been outlawed. Graeme is a genius.

as a winter cyclist (In canada) the bike gear almost isn't as important as your clothing is. However I had a few changes I had to make to my bike. Larger pedals that can handle boots and studded tires for the snow and ice. that's about all I changed on my bike. Clothing though, god damn I had to buy so much new gear that could handle the temps. Goggles were the best purchase by far. Oh and more bike lights, when the sun goes down at 4:30PM I needed much better lights.

Journal of Applied Physiology- Tramadol reduced perception of effort during the fixed intensity trial (P = 0.026). The 1.3% faster time in the tramadol condition would be sufficient to change the outcomes of a race and is highly meaningful and pervasive in this cohort of highly trained cyclists.

Shimano profits have been hit because they had to ramp up production due to 18 months of shortages. Early this year supply chains received huge amounts of stock just as Ukraine happened, affecting global prices - at the same time people stopped buying as many bikes - they are taking a hit by discounting to clear stock.

With regards to Shimano & Sram. Sales are probably only going to get worse as cheaper chinese groupsets get better and become more accessible with time. We've already seen it happening with some bike frame and wheel manufacturers such as Winspace (although Ive been told their prices have jumped in the last few years. Apparently they are planning to open up a brick and mortar store in the US somewhere and when that happens. Prices will go up even further to cover all the overhead costs involved.) mainstream stores will still sell Shimano/Sram equipped bikes so its not like either brand are going to die any time soon. But sales will definitely be lost.

How often do you hear of sportsmen/women having a pain killing injection to take part, and nobody really bats an eyelid as they're not bothered....it's part of the sport. Meanwhile cycling ties itself up in knots trying to be ultra clean (obviously with good reason). I had Sora on a Domane AL winter bike a few years ago; it was perfectly fine, so much so I've just bought an 'old' Allez Sport with Sora as a winter bike.

One of the big things to bear in mind with AVV's career as well is that her strengths have suited the way that modern women's cycling races have evolved. Earlier in her career, there weren't as many longer multi-day stage races - and certainly weren't many that included bigger climbs. Case in point, she didn't win the first three editions of La Course because they were just a shortened version of the Champs Elysee stage of the TdF - but when they changed it for a mountain stage she won the next two. It's not just her palmares either - she had a horror crash at the 2016 Olympics yet was back on her bike within two weeks, and won races a month later. Tough as nails.

Regarding adrenaline and injuries: I once decided to subscribe to a half marathon event at the very last moment, thus paying quite a high fee for it. Then, one kilometre into the course, I managed to roll over and sprain my left ankle. I thought that I had paid so much money for this bloody race that I can't just give up now, not for for this, and besides I likely wouldn't be able to run again for weeks anyway after I stop, so I'd better to just keep going. So I did, running the remaining 20k with that sprained ankle. Didn't quite make a PB, but did run my second best time, which still stands. After finishing the race my sprained ankle was super-swollen and started to hurt so very badly! I then had to use forearm crutches for the next three days because the pain was so bad, and it took months before I was able to ditch all ankle support and run normally again. (And yes, luckily, riding was always OK and even prescribed by the doctors!)

I've used this drug for pain (injury, thigh tear and a calf tear) just twice in marathons. What happens is that it numbs the pain to the point that you blow due to not having a fatigue pain marker, so you run too fast, both times blew at around 22 miles, and you can't run through it, complete bang! Both times, I ran slower than should've, first as a novice (NY) and the second as a more experienced runner (1st of three Dubai marathons). From then on, when injured, I either did not run or just put up with the pain, so that I could regulate my pace from the pain of fatigue, which was always lovely...... Not.

Hi Guys, entertaining Podcast/KZread. Love your stance on not always needing latest and greatest but the things that will do a perfect job for normal riders (Tiagra and 105). But as for the amount of experience/knowledge you have sometimes I find your advice to listener questions a little bit too superficial. Eg. winterbike there is a lot to say about it using different lubes for chain, bearings, different tires, swap wheelsets etc.. Would be great if you could spend a little bit more time on that so that listeners/viewers can really improve their riding experience upon your expert advice. Cheers
